Just wondering if anyone has one and are they worth the money and are they as bright as they claim ??? My garage is only 19x24 but lighting is very poor and I spend a lot of time in my garage.looking to see if it's worth the investment of if it's all just hype?

Yes, we've seen it...this topic comes up about once a week. ;) Do a search here in the electrical section, or just page down a ways and you should be able find other discussions.

edit: here are links to a few of the previous discussions.

Yep - been there done that. It's in my spreadsheet since it comes up so often. Here: Lighting System Comparison.
It's a dumb idea for your average garage. For the price of 1 fixture that'll give you shadows everywhere, you could fill your garage with 2 lamp fluorescent F32T8 strip lights providing excellent even illumination with no shadows and you won't have the glare burning a hole through your eyeballs.

Platonic - I looked at your spreadsheet and to say I am overwhelmed with info is an understatement. So looking at it can you tell me what the best option is for lighting for a 40X60 shop?

Need more info about what you feel is important. Ceiling height would be a good start too.

The spreadsheet is all about providing a means to determine the best bang for the buck ballast and lamp combination depending on your particular needs/desires. At the same time we all needed to know how the new technology LED retrofit lamps and fixtures relate to current fluorescent technology. If you want the exact lamp/ballast combination listed and you purchase a $30 strip light to gut and update, add the $30 strip light cost to the green block and resort by the field of your choice. Or maybe you just want to get more lumens out of your existing fixtures.

If your primary goal is:

Maximum light output per fixture to reduce the number of fixtures you need to install, sort by lumen output.

Energy efficiency, sort by Lumens per Watt.

Lifetime cost, sort by Lumens x yr/$ (higher number is better).

Low maintenance, sort by Life Yrs.

Low temperature starting can’t be sorted, but I think the color code is obvious.

Keep in mind that this is the short list. I started with the 58 page Sylvania quicksystem performance guide linked in the spreadsheet notes. There’s no one single correct answer as every scenario is different in size, temperature, local electricity rates,…

The preface to the spreadsheet is in this thread: The Best Light Fixture Ever

16' ceiling sheeted in white metal siding material. I will be doing welding/fab, automotive repair in the shop. I won't be painting.

I don't mind spending the money to do it right

I am wondering if anyone has an opinion about hand tools made in China vs the US?

Just kidding.

I like the Cooper/Metalux 4 lamp HBL-432-N-UNV-EB81/PLUS fixture for your application.
Qty.20 dropped down 2.5ft
Garage: X,Y = 40 x 60
Fixture Arrangement: X,Y = 4 x 5 (fixtures parallel with 60ft)
Spacing: X,Y = 10 x 12ft (fixture center to center)

Another option would be to get the Metalux HBL632RT1 fixture $89.71 @ Lowes.

Qty.15 dropped down 1.5ft
Garage: X,Y = 40 x 60
Fixture Arrangement: X,Y = 3 x 5 (fixtures parallel with 60ft)
Spacing: X,Y = 12 x 12ft (fixture center to center)

Or take this fixture, but with previous 20 fixture arrangement and remove the 2 center lamps making it a 4 lamp fixture. This would give you the possibility of adding more light in the highly unlikely event that you're not satisfied.

Note: All solutions provided so far provide 96 to 100 lumens at 30" workplane height.

nywho i got all 8 of my lights in. one of them was bad out of the box. there sending me another unit asap. but i got 2 lights hung up in my shop. i have 4 for the shop and this is only 2. the third bay light is going to stay like that because its just for security. but the lights i replaced were the green looking also. so this picture can show the difference. remember this is just 2 10,000 lumen lights in a 40'x40'x14'. the third bay is an 20'x40'x14

And from your picture we learn the obvious - you now have serious glare and shadow issues. The empty center bay gives the illusion that the lighting is OK, but the left bay tells the real story = All those lumens and you can't see a single detail on the vehicles parked there. The larger the vehicle, the worse the problem.

On a positive note: BigAss lights do beat the strange green light in right bay.

its because of how the door is situated. im ordering more lights for the shop. but everwhere else I put the lights they fixed the problems. I have 8 lights spread out to 4 different locations. the lights in the shop only get used at night and when it is raining
