So this just happens in the South, not in other humid areas? I could of sworn I’ve read about guys fighting rust elsewhere in the country.I don't get this Southern thing. Spend money on tools and machinery and then let them rust in an unconditioned shed.![]()
I’m better at staying ahead now than in the past, generally, when new (new to me) tooling comes in, it gets sprayed down when CRC or similar.I had way more problems with rusty tool when I was in chicago than I do now. I guess you just learn to take care of things.
totally agree, and same for me, I buy the best I can afford which is far from best, then I have to fix most things, I am somewhat handy as most on here probably are. I was lucky in that I built my shop and was able to make some provisions for air. i keep my air set at 80, in only one section where the machines are. which helps the temp swings that cause condensation as well as keeping the humidity down which tend to go up with temp. so the ac runs when its most humid. I also coat everything with boeshield wax.So this just happens in the South, not in other humid areas? I could of sworn I’ve read about guys fighting rust elsewhere in the country.
No John, not quite the way it goes. Your making the assumption that these were all rust free when bought. Can’t always find completely rust free old iron, I get the best I can for what $$$ I can spend. That goes for the pricey things like rotary tables and such, stuff that I would not spend $700 to have one, but jump on a rusty $100 one in an instant.
Yes, some have grown some rust since I’ve had, but the vast majority I keep coated to keep rust at bay.
Not everyone can do a conditioned shop, I’m guessing it’d probably take a minimum of $6K to seal, insulate and get decent A/C to make it work. A lot of the work I do with doors open and on the porch, mostly dirty steel and welding work, so a conditioned shop probably not really for me.
A conditioned room for the lathe and mill has been discussed, just not in the cards right now.
Thanks for stopping in.
Craig, I'm not pointing a finger at you. Ever since I started to look for machines to replace the machines I sold in WA all I see are rusty equipment. There's a guy on FBMP right now with an ad asking for $60k for a bunch of Powermatic "brand new machines ( table saw, planer, band saw, lathe, etc.). ALL unboxed , no warranty, with rusted surfaces, and he's asking very close to new machine prices. I contacted him to point out these negatives and his only response was "These are BRAND NEW, NEVER USED and $500 less than store prices right now." For me, my time in the shop needs to be productive, not spent repairing and cleaning tools and machines to get to a productive point. Maybe because this was how I made a living. I've spent waaay too much on my new shop, but I wouldn't be satisfied with a shell and rusting tools. So this just happens in the South, not in other humid areas? yeah that is BS, when you clean off the rust it is never the same finish as the original. there should be a much greater discount or let them sit on it. I would love to have mill tables and ways with the scraping intact, but that never survives the first good rust. but all of my stuff is tight and serviceable, but will never bring the value of one with fresh scraped waysCraig, I'm not pointing a finger at you. I agree with losing the original finish.yeah that is BS, when you clean off the rust it is never the same finish as the original. there should be a much greater discount or let them sit on it.
