I thought I was happy with my Porter Cable 60 gallon upright.... until I came across an Atlas Copco GA10 compressor like this one on Ebay... it was being cleared out from an industrial food processor who was moving to a bigger location and had been replaced with a newer unit, it obviously was leaking oil and disconnected so everyone assumed it was dead, so I offer low thinking I could use the motor for a rotary phase converter - sold.

Got it home and looked it over... 10HP 160PSI 43CFM :) screw compressor, service note on the air filter less than 6 months old, auto drain, separate fan cooled oil cooler, dew point and oil temp/pressure protection, AND a built in air dryer !!! with a HUGE mouse nest in the back of the air dryer... where the mice had chewed a small hole through the air line !!, the oil cooler had been bypassed at some point, and the two lines looped with a union... when I inspected the cooler there was an obvious crack on one of the ( removable! ) fittings... called up the previous owner the next day and talked to the guy who had bought the new compressor to replace it- it was running fine when replaced but would "shut down for a while " ( go into thermal protection because of oil temps ) after about 6 hours during the heat of summer...
1 replacement air line, 1 fitting for the oil cooler and it is back in business...

do I need it... hell no!
is it cool... hell yes!
massive overkill? .. oh yeah!!

not bad for 75$ :bounce:

Love the Tires :)

I am cleaning up a compressor I recently got from craigslist, and just bought the parts to make me some vibration/ leveling mounts as my floor is NO where near LEVEL or SMOOTH. Craigslist Kobalt Compressor PickUp

I found some rubber mounts that will support up to 180 lb each, they also have 300 & 600lb each same size just different composition. bought a set for a guy at work as he has the 80 gallon version of my Kobalt and will be doing something similar.

Will post pictures once i get it situated and the mounts built.

... this forum cost me MONEY !!

Any details on those mounts?? I'll be needing something to level mine out as well (80 gallon IR).

Thanks.

Thanks!
Updated my profile, I am in Kamloops B.C. Canada.
It is a 220-230Volt machine but pulls 43 FLA... so a soft start profile VFD is on my to do list if I can figure out how to tie the unloader to the VFD.. It will not be a daily machine but a flex hose and check valve and ball valve will plumb it into my 60 Gallon tank for big jobs. A buddy is a landscaper who blows out sprinklers every fall and told me he would buy it if I put a gas engine on it.....
yeah.... NO!! :)
rent it???? NO!! :)
The funny thing is it is quieter than the upright unit... enclosed cabinet with sound insulation on the insides and it is impressive sounding but not loud. The upright "rings" when it get to the end of cycle and I find myself waiting for it to shut up some times.

Nothing special or out-of-the-ordinary...but I'm stoked! No more 'making do' with a dewalt 18gallon oil-less (it's actually a very decent compressor though).

This is one in the back of my van. 30 gal 11 horse Briggs with an Italian two stage pump. The exhaust is run through the floor and into a geo metro muffler. It runs kind of quite for a Briggs engine.

Hello Everyone This is my first post here, but I've been a long time lurker. My name is Moses and I live in Los Angeles Here is my Franken compressor. I bought the compressor on Craigslist for $225. turned out a piece of the reed valve had fell into the high pressure side and seized the pump. I was going to rebuild it but thought it would be better to just buy a new one. I settled on a 5hp 3 cylinder single phase pump from Eaton. I mainly do body work and paint.

I sanded and Sprayed SPI epoxy Primer followed by some single stage Kirker ultra-glo I had around.

doerr 3450 5hp motor. turns the pump fine. just needed to replace a cap.

Now I have a dilemma I was given a Dresser Leroi 400 series compressor with a 30 gallon tank. It was gas driven and the previous owner ran the motor without oil and ruined it. So I'm thinking of replacing the eaton pump with that one, or just buy another motor and keep it at my brothers. It would hardly ever see use there.

First of all, great first post. That SPI Epoxy primer really works.

I might suggest another use for that freebie compressor. Strip it down to just the tank, add a couple of fittings and use it as a reserve tank on the 80-gallon when you're doing an all-over paint job or a big blasting project. The compressor should cycle a little less frequently with 110-gallon capacity.

Check out this little beauty I found on the weekend. Aussie made motor (not sure about the pump) so I had to grab it.

Gave it some fresh oil and seems to work well so far.

Ok here is a link to my thread where I built the feet for my compressor

Have to say they work great so far... once i have it up and running i will know more

but for now, I am content with the performance, it does NOT bounce or dance around. and i can NOT fell any vibration or shaking on the floor.

What size tank/compressor do you have? Just wondering if there is a limit to how much weight the hockey puck will withstand...lol

I'm getting ready to start my compressor (IR 80 gallon/7HP @ 600+ lbs) install and want to get the base figured out.

Thanks

Use the hockey pucks!!!!

600 pounds will NOT bother the pucks!!!!
At all, EVER!!!

The pucks CAN be drilled and/or machined!

I DOUBT that anyone could squash one!

The are 1.00" thick vulcanized HARD rubber.

There is a video on U Tube, they try to BURN it with a red hot ball of steel.
Does NOT phase it, just makes a little carbon spot.

I have had pucks under my compressor for 20 years, ZERO deflection.
We played hockey and coached, so the pucks were free.

Your Pal, Gary

Here's my Frankencompressor. Circa 1940 Westinghouse 1BYC compressor. Two stage, pressure lubed pump, mounted on a 60 gallon tank off a Quincy compressor, 1.5 hp Baldor motor (which is the hp rating these pumps originally came with).

I bought the pump off of Craigslist. It came with the original circa 1940 horizontal tank which I would have liked to have kept, but did not trust it after peering inside and seeing craters and crevasses of rust. Reality is that the tank walls were probably twice as thick as the newer tank, but I just could not chance it, even if I had it hydrotested, I just couldn't trust the 75 year old tank after seeing what it looked like inside. I sold it to a guy that's going to turn it into a barbecue.

The pump had a slight knock when I bought it. I re-bushed the low pressure connecting rod (high pressure rod has no replaceable bushing... or was that low pressure rod, I can't remember now), replaced one of the wrist pins, and installed new rings and valves. The pump on the original tank was also missing a check valve between the pump and tank, and there was also no unloader. That's all fixed now. Started it up tonight and it quickly built pressure and sounded good. Glad to have saved this piece of Americana from the scrap yard.

A 2-stage 1.5HP pump is quite a rare pump, actually the first time heard such a thing exist. Other 2-stage pumps were always 3hp required. CONGRATS!!

Thanks guys! Next step is to pick up a belt guard. I'd feel better having that "insurance."

The Saylor Beall model 703 pump is the only other one that I know of..

Here is mine.
Hydrovane rotary vane compressor, 145psi, with 40gal tank.
Works on 3 phase 400 volt.

I bought it second hand for $300, newprice is $3000....
It is really quiet too, 69dB

These kind of compressors can run 24/7.
We have 3 Hydrovane compressors at my work running 24/7 (offshore platform), but they are a lot bigger offcourse.

I don`t know what the cfm is at 90psi, but its rated for 24cfm at 100psi, so that`s obviously higher at 90psi...
They do make 220V models for the US market.
Hydrovane is originall a British company, but they are now part of the US:drool: Gardner Denver company

I have 2 40gal industrial pressure vessels (1/4" wall thickness) that were obsolete at work, i am planning to use these for extra air capacity:thumbup:

At work we have 2 big hydrovane compressors with 75hp electric motors:shocking:, they are in an enclosure 3 feet wide, 4 feet high and 5 feet long.
Any way to convert them to 220?
While it seems that everybody is mocking about 110V Harbor Freight welders (or was that on weldingweb.com:lol_hitti )
In Europe we mock stationary power tools on 220V (actually it is 230V now in Europe), any decent welder, drill press, tablesaw or compressor is usually powered on 3-phase 400V.
I have a Mig welder, a Tig Welder, a drill press and this compressor, all powered on 3 phase 400V.

It's a Delta 2 stage 80 gal. 175 psi kicks in at 145 psi, 16.0scfm @ 90 psig. I think it's 5HP with 6.5HP peak. It's the one Sam's carries. I've been drooling over it for about 3 years. It's a single phase 240V 30A. I don't have it bolted down or wired yet. I wasn't quite ready for it yet. I can't decide how I want to plumb it. Been thinking 3/4" K copper for the main line and 1/2" K copper drops. I was thinking about making a bypass and sitting a galvanized tub outside with a coil of 3/4" M in it that I could put water and ice in for media blasting, not sure it's necessary though.

How does the media blasting that you are referring to work? Do you use normal water-ice, or dry ice? do you have a like to a good explanation?

Champion made 2 stage compressors requiring as little as 3/4 hp. Not a lot of CFM but they were real, oil lubed, 2 stage pumps.

Look in 20 year old Grainger catalogs. They were sold under the Dayton brand name also.

I just picked this up off of craigslist. The guy had $200 on it, but I gave him $300 to deliver it to me. Its a Saylor-Beall 705 pump with what I think is a 5hp motor that should push about 23CFM. Its so dirty I can't even read the model number, but I can probably clean it up somewhat. I got it to run the Eastwood dual blaster I just got off of craigslist for $300. Not that great of a deal, but I was going to buy one anyway. One problem, it has a 3ph motor. I work in electrical sales though, and can probably get one pretty reasonable. The guy even threw in the dessicant dryer. So, how did I do?
