Re: garage refurb

Thanks for the kind words my friends. I'd like to get more done but not I have weather constraints, a non-existant funds and a few other matters to halt my project. Hopefully things will get better in the Spring and I can go back at it.

Hey Nutts - This is one of those threads that should never be far from the top of the list. Great work! I really like the workbench and how you've improved but still kept the original flavor of your building. I've had more than my share of contact with men in your profession lately and just want to thank you guys for doing what you do. Any progress lately or are you snowed in?

Re: garage refurb

Thanks guys, no progress lately as winter moved in. Well you could call it winter by the time of year but snowed in, nope no way. Today Feb 1st, it's 47° and raining.

Things have not been going well for our city right now, money is real tight. We have 2 Fire Fighters laid off, we are taking comp time in lieu of cash for OT worked and no holiday pay (more comp time). Working on the garage comes from extra cash from working OT. It's not there ($$)so I'm on hold and not sure when I can start back on the siding. I do have some siding but there's few other things than need done prior to continuing.

Its a shame that you guys that provide such a valuable service to the community seem to be the first to be affected by budget shortfalls. Hang in there and I'll keep watching for updates.

Eric, man the things you have done with that property all around is nothing short of amazing!! I ran across this thread while researching something elseand got so caught up in reading this I had to subscribe to keep reading it till the end. So sorry to hear about your Station issues. Seems the most important things are those that get cut supporting our communities. Hopefully things will get better soon and you can finish the garage project.

Re: garage refurb

Thanks guys. Hopefully if the weather holds out, I can do a few things this Spring. I still have some siding left and things I can work on. One thing I did get done was removing what was left og the gas pump island out front. The thing was almost an eyesore to me. I still need some more stone to put down but I'm waiting for it to get packed down a bit more from driving on it.

FWIW, I screwed up when I said we have two guys laid off. We have 3 guys laid off and another that went active duty (from the Nat Guard) to try and save one job. Luckily, one of the laid off guys got hired by his previous employer and another guy got hired by a neighboring city, one that we have mutual aid with. Things are looking grim for us in the city and I'm not sure what the future holds. I'm going to advise the guy that went to GFD, not to come back but to stay there. I believe he has more job security there and ***** to lose a guy that you consider a little brother.

In the mean time, I've had a project that I have been working on in the garage. It should be done this week and I can start with a little outside work. If it rains, I'm going to start painting the "wood project" side of the garage. It'll get a paint scheme to match the other side.

The project I'm working on.

Re: garage refurb

As you can tell from the rest of my thread, I have painted one side white over the previous gray. I keep realizing how dark the gray is on the other side. I've decided to do something about it. The problem is, now it's getting nice and I should be working outside not inside. I figure I can work on this as it rains.

Where I started last night after some progress. I thought maybe I should grab the camera.

Tonight after the first coat. I'll go back out and roll on a second coat.

You may think the white goes down farther than the other side, you're right it does. There is a reason for that but you won't see that till later.

Re: garage refurb

Wow, a radial arm saw! My dad has one of those in his basement and I remember him using it a ton when I was a kid. It's just had stuff piled on it for the last 15-20 years though.

Aside from having a larger work surface and closer to eye level, is there a benefit to using one over a compound slide miter saw? Though I guess larger work surface and eye level may be reason enough!

Re: garage refurb

The advantage of the radial arm saw was that I paid $200 for it new because it was an older model found in the back during inventory versus the regular price of $500.

One nice thing you can do is cut dados fairly fast for some simple work. I've had it long enough that I just use it when I need it. Having a long wall for it to be placed against helps.

Re: garage refurb

Great looking project, and a stunning amount of work! Reading thru the whole thread makes it seem as if it happened in one big push!

You might want to check out http://radialarmsawrecall.com/ if that is the Craftsman saw that it looks like. I didn't ever hear about the recall until last week on GJ. You type in your model number and they tell you if a retrofit kit is available. If not, they will give you $ to destroy your saw (which you can take or not.) Mine has the kit available, so I ordered it (free.) The instructions look pretty extensive, and it comes with a new table top. At the very least, you will know if your saw is 'extra special dangerous.'

FWIW, there are several threads on GJ debating radial arm safety, and correct usage. Personally, I rarely use mine, but having it set up for quick dados is probably the best use of it vs. a sliding compound.

Sorry to hear about the uncertainty at work. I'm always amazed that politicians start screaming about cuts to cops and fire service as soon as there are budget issues. They still seem to find the money for the guy who inspects beauty parlors and barbers, and all the 'commissions' and 'outreach' programs though.

Thank you for your service to your community and our country.

Re: garage refurb

Dado cuts, I would imagine those are much easier with a radial arm saw than it would be with a table saw as you can get a better look at your cut. Thanks for mentioning it.

They make it really nice when you're cutting dados on some larger lumber like 4x4s or long boards.

It's unbelievable how much brighter it is from just changing a paint color. I need to paint a blue stripe on the rest of what I have painted and it will be done. Once that is done, I can put some stuff back on the walls and hang some new peg board.

It is so much brighteron this side of the garage. I should have painted it when I did the other side.

Tomorrow's project will be hanging new pegboardand trying to remember where all this **** went.
04102012garagepics006.jpg

After that is done, I have to rip some 2x4 done to make some more trim. I'll slap some paint on it and hopefully get it up later on. Once that is done, I can hang the rest of my junk back up.

Re: garage refurb

hopefully, the new pegboard is white for an even brighter work space!

Actually, it's still brown. I almost bought some white pegboard at HD. It was $18/sheet and 3/16" vs the stuff I bought at Menard's $11/sheet and 1/4".

For some reason, I prefer to have brown (normal) pegboard over the white. :dunno:

They do stand out more with the white. I also added a pull station to the wall that I picked up. I'm thinking of adding a small section of conduit (painted red) between the pull station and alarm box.

The new colors look better in there, for sure.

The little call boxes are pretty cool. I'm not sure if there is something in them anymore, but your mention of a conduit between them got me thinking (okay, you better run now!)... Maybe the conduit could actually be air line and you hide your air quick disconnects in there. Or maybe if you don't need compressed air in that room, it might be kinda cool to hide something garage-related in there like cordless tool chargers or something. Just a thought.

Keep up the good work.

I have compressed air in and going through that room. I am gathering pieces to run new lines though. ;)

The fire stuff keeps accumulating rather easily. One of the call boxes came from one of my neighbors from a plant he did work in, it was getting tossed. The other from another neighbor where he used to work, one of their old boxes. The extinguishers are mostly from another neighbor who comes across them, where ? I don't know.
The pull station came from our station that was getting trashed (no key for it) during a remodel. Once it's in the dumpster, it's fair game. The hydrant wrench, I can't remember where it came from. The spanner wrench came from one of the old retired guys who passed away about 18 months ago. I'll hold onto that one forever.
The Firefighter St sign came from my daughters. My step-dad made the frame for the calendar pic. It from Jan '05 when our new ladder truck was featured on a KME (manufacturer) calendar. :rocker:

I hung the wrenches up last night so they can't be seen in the pic.

NUTTSGT -

I spend part of last evening & early this morning going through your complete thread. Great vision, planning & execution on the complete rehab / refurb of your garage & shop space. Really nice job and the results speak for themselves.

Also I love the Call Boxes on the wall - super character addition !

Best regards - Dave

Re: garage refurb

I can get you a key for that pull station. Is it a notifier, fire lite, or? Can't see THAT well LOL

No need to worry about it, it has a screw to keep it shut and it for display now.

I took a better picture of the wall today, after the wrenches were hung up yesterday.
