Re: Garage Refurb

I bought the K4 master system. Here is a link to the one that I bought at menard's.

http://www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/fasteners/jigs/kreg-jig-k4-master-system/p-2043919.htm

I spent some time trying to sand the water marks out of the shelf and used some 400 and 600 grit paper. No luck. I was afraid to go much farther and get through the polycrylic and into the veneer of the plywood. Since the veneer is only like 1/32" thick, I talked to the wife about it. Needless to say, it's sitting in her office right now.

I am sure she is happy with it and proud that you made it for her. The marks just become part of the history of the woodwork now. All the antique pieces you see all have their own marks and history behind them

Good looking piece and thanks for the link.

Honestly, It'll probably get coffee spilled on it and dinged up.

It also already had one character mark on it already. If you notice the dark gray streak, apparently, the Maple tree had a nail in it when it was cut for veneer. There's a small hole in the streak, both top and the middle shelf the same.

I got one of those for Christmas and just used it recently. Having a built in clamp to the jig has made life much easier. Before that I would use a cheap HF squeeze clamp and have to press pretty hard to keep it in place.

My wife's actually gotten really good at using the Kreg Jig and definitely likes the built in clamp more.

Absolutely. The only thing I need to perfect is to keep the board from sinching a hair away from the pocket side when the screw snugs down the last little bit.

Eric,

Read this thing from start to finish. :bounce: Congrats on the success you have achieved, nice work!

Just read the whole thread. Really nice job. thats a really nice shop.

Thanks for the compliments guy, it's appreciated.

I guess it might be time for a little update, nothing major though. I'm sure somewhere I had mentioned buying this Cman drill press off CL awhile back. I ran into some issues with it and wanted to do some restoration on it anyways. I'll be posting a little of that too.

Re: Garage Refurb

I started a thread in the General Tool section so I won't rehash that but I will toss in a few pictures and the link.

You can see some of the rust on the handles, they were this way when I bought the unit.

I cleaned them up with a roloc disc, follwed by a gray scotchbrite and some polishing with Mother's.

Drilling out the shaft for a new roll pin.

Roll pin in.

Re: Garage Refurb

When I lowerd the ceiling, I reused a few of the T12 lights. This was an ongoing issue, one side would all ways burn out not long after they had been replaced.

I bought aballast last night at HD thinking I could change them over to T8. Once I took the light down and apart, I realized they had no ballast but a small circuit board and a transformer on each end.

Re: Garage Refurb

I made a trip back to HD and returned the ballast. I picked up two more 2 bulb T8 strip lights. I had purchase the other two prior and was going to buy one at a time and replace a few other fixtures inthe garage.

To keep up with the other light fixtures that I have up, I cut and painted some pieces of OSB to act as stand-offs. They will be dry by Monday and I will start hanging the new fixtures.

Re: Garage Refurb

Lights up and ready to be wired, which I'm dreading.

Pulling some wire for a short run. Since I have the wire going through the insulation, I'm running it up through the lights so I don't have to look for it in the attic.

Re: Garage Refurb

Wired up and shining bright. These new lights do make a difference over the older T12s that I had.

This light has to sit offset from the rest due to the attic access.

Re: Garage Refurb

Now you might be wondering why I mentioned earlier that I was dreading the wiring portion of the project. It wasn't really the wiring, it was where it was at. If you remember, I lowered the ceiling and created an attic space, which isn't very big.

Where that junction is sitting is 14" between the rafters and ceiling joists. To the left when I had to fanagle my **** through to get to the other side and wire, is 18". I was none too worried about making the wiring neat as I normally do.

I also took a picture of the lower gray that I have been repainted little by little. I actually picked out a slightly lighter gray than I had before. The original paint I used was from Big Lots and was Battleship Gray and reflected almost no light.

Nice addition to the already great shop.

I have really enjoyed your build, you do amazing work! I was looking at the pulls you put on your refab cabinets and figured I would show you some I picked up the other day, They have a few different styles at Hobby Lobby and can even get ones that look exactly like the door handles from 60's Mustangs!

I spied those handles last week when the wife and I were there. I was also checking out the old style door handles too. Cool but a little pricey.

Slather on some baby powder before you fool with the insulation. it will help keep it out of your skin. You've done a great job on yer shop! And on chronicling it on here as well, that's not easy to do.

Re: Garage Refurb

Can never have too much light. Looks good!

You're right, better to be able to switch off the extra not needed light than not have enough. :D

I worked on my drill press today, getting it apart for some cleaning and paint work.

Once I had stuff apart, I sanded and scuffed it, wiped it down and painted it. I'm using some Rustoleum Hammered silver. I've seen a few GJ'ers use it and their projects that came out looking nice.

Then sometime tomorrow, I'll get started on the column and base.

Re: Garage Refurb

Sorry for the lack of updates in the last few days guys, I've been at the fire dept longer than expected. I went to work Saturday morning thinking I was working my regular shift. Once I got there, I realized that I had to pay a guy back 12 hours on Monday of "trading time". After finding that out, I was up for a 24 hour OT spot on Sunday (short shift after a retirement) which left me at work from Sat at 0700 til Monday at 1900 (7pm) then right back in Tuesday for my regular 24 hour shift.

I didn't get this picture posted before I left home Friday. It's where I am at this point, everthing is painted.

I can clean the column and start reassembly later today.

Read all 79 pages, at work. (boss was off) I really enjoyed the Do it Yourself attitude, its just the motivation I needed!

Can you share some pictures of the tool that you use to put the tapcons up around the outside? Also I may have missed it but were the size tapcons you used?

I believe the tapcons I used on the outside for the firring strips were 3/16"x 2 1/4". Putting them was nothing more than a Dewalt 18V hammer drill and then I used my 18V Dewalt impact driver with a hex bit.

Thank you for the compliments.

More than normal. :lol_hitti

Seriously though, I have had more of a regular fire going the majority of the time rather than a small fire or letting it go out.

I still have plenty to last another month easily only because I cut back what I had cut. I had some left over from the previous year and wanted to get it used up so I didn't cut as much this past fall.

fanagle or finagle, as long as you knew what I meant. :lol_hitti I remember trying to figure how to spell it a while back and did a Google search, my main form of spellcheck. I came across fanagle in the Urban Dictionary and thought good enough for who it's for.

Welcome to GJ crimegods. Thank you for the compliments. This place is full of knowledge and I have learned more from this site than I could ever share.

Enjoy your garage and learn in your garage before you try something in the home was my theory. Make sure to take plenty of pictures when you start work on it.

Great job is an understatement.. Really.

Looking like the perfect shop..
Will you be installing a lift of some sort when you get the time to fiddle with new or existing fox bodies?

I ask because it seems like you dont settle for half in any other place of the build, and because you seem to have the roof height required to do so as well.

No lift for me. While it might seem nice and big, the bay area of the garage is narrow. I think it's 21 or 22 feet. Small and I'd rather not two posts in the way of the small area.

Oh, and yes, I did lose a fingertip, but not on the farm and I did marry a farmer's daughter. General service person( i.e. oil change guy) started a car while I was working under the hood and I got my left hand out of the way except the fingertips. Doc was able to save all but the middle one.
