Only took about a week to get though it all. Lots of useful stuff on here I'm going to be trying. Inspiring me to get some more progress made on mine and pics of said progress. Will have to start my own thread here soon

Just seeing that stack of quikrete bags makes my back ache!
JB

Hasn't been that bad. I took a break and cut fire wood for a week to heat the garage for the winter.

Be sure to take plenty of pictures, every day take a few and post them up. While it might get to be a PITA, it'll become motivation to keep working on it and become a scrap book for you to go back to later.

Nutt, It is great to read through your timeline and see the evolution of your shop through that past 5 years. You have put a lot of effort into this build and the attention to detail is inspirational. I appreciate even the details of minor upgrades such as your airline additions and such.
Great work and thanks for sharing.

Re: Garage Refurb

The floor is not much more than dirt and low head space. I started many years ago to dig it out, lowering it in the process. It seems that every time I try to get started on it, something else comes up and throws me a curve.

Now that scenario sure sounds familiar. Finally got back on doing the other 1/2 of my basement.........so close to pouring and calling it done....

Huge job. Good luck with your dig!

Wow, that's quite the endeavor. Any idea what a job like that would cost?

If I had dirt floors in my crawl space I'd be tempted to start digging tonight.

We have a poured concrete crawl space with ~4ft of height. I'm not sure why the original owners didn't have it dug at least 2 more feet as it was a custom home in 1971. Many other homes in the neighborhood have full basements--both neighbors included.

Nutts: i've hand mixed plenty of those 85 pound bags and never thought to add more cement if i wanted a smoother surface. i've always been using my cement for sidewalks and patios where i wanted it a little gritty for good footing.

Zeke: thanks for the 411

Stiney: amazing job on that basement. any chance you might be able to go in your Garage Journal profile and put a link to the build thread if you did or want to do one because i for one would like to see more pictures. good luck

You've put some serious effort into your place and it shows. I wish our cellar was that big. Did you have a way to enter/exit your basement from the outside or did you have to go back up the stairs through the house ?

Haha, Andy Dufresne style! In his pockets so the warden doesn't know what he's up to.

Re: Garage Refurb

Haven't been doing much or really anything to update with, so it's been awhile.

I did mount a 24" strip light under the cabinets. When I put it in, I decided to add an outlet also when I have my laptop sitting on the bench also. My original design of just an outlet at each end of the bench hasn't worked out so well. In this pic, you can see the switch and outlet I added.

What you also see is the lighted magnifying glass sitting on the bench. I've been wantin gto move it but couldn't come up with an idea or place until this morning.

Re: Garage Refurb

The lamp sits in a base and easily pulls out. I thought about a shelf but then lamp arm won't swing where it needs to be. Then the light bulb came on in my little brain. All I need is a piece of round tubing to make a bracket to hold the arm, no base needed.

First step up was to measure the arm mount and found that it was just under a 1/2". I had no tubing that size so I made a trip to town. I figured tubing that size should be easy to find. Wrong, TSC;no, Family Farm & Home;no, True Value;no. I considered using a piece of 3/8 black pipe but a 1/2" bolt would quite fit in it. So I didn't know if it would work.

Last stop Fastenal, they had no tubing and he asked about a pipe ******. I told him I considered that and if he had a set of calipers to measure the I.D., it might work. Lo and behold, it was pretty much spot on.

Re: Garage Refurb

I dug through the scrap tote and found a piece of sq tubing and angle. A little cutting, grinding and welding and a test fit. I used a couple of lags instead of screws figuring they would be stronger.

Once I knew it would work, I ground off the corners of the angle and toss some rattle can black at it. While that was drying, I drilled through the arm mount for a cotter pin. While it probably doesn't need it, I figured it would be for insurance. If I didn't do it, one of the times I pushed it up and around, it would come out of the bracket. I also put a dab of grease on it so it spins a little bit easier.

I have seen some of those lights with a clamp for mounting to workbench ends, etc. good engineering but it's a shame for making 4 stops to fight the right fitting.

Did you get anything else why you were out or was that thinking time for a new project?

Thanks Eric. Your place is a far cry from what it started out as too, nicely done.

No, didn't have to ferry dirt through the house, thankfully. I have to admit it took so long I felt like poor old Andy Dufresne though.

We had 2 separate outside entries, so on the 1st half I dug out I used the one on that side. Then we bricked it up and filled in the outside part (it was the one with lower headroom anyways)

The second entry is in the far left corner in the earlier picture I posted. We had Kousma out of Willard spray foam insulate the foundation sill area and the basement entry. Made a substantial difference. I really wasn't expecting to be able to tell the difference, was pleasantly surprised.

I don't have a link specifically on the basement dig, but there are lots of pictures of it in an indirect way on my geothermal install thread on Bangshift.com - link here http://www.bangshift.com/forum/foru...quit-fooling-with-houses-and-get-back-to-cars

Re: Garage Refurb

Instead of a cotter pin what about hitch pin. I think that's what they're called

I think a hitch pin would have been too big. I have a cotter pin asst, so if I have to replace it every now and then, no big deal.

I didn't get anything else. Sometimes when I get in the mood and find a project to do, that's my sole intent and nothing else matters. I guess when I think about something and try to work an idea in my mind for a period of time and it comes to me, it's time to get it done.

Re: Garage Refurb

I guess it's time for a bit of an update, mostly to clear up some floor space. I've had these Sansui speakers for several years. They belonged to my step-dad and he got them when he was in the Navy in Holy Lochs, Scotland, 40 plus years ago.

They are going to replace these little speakers but I'll need a larger bracket to hold them up there.

Re: Garage Refurb

I picked up some steel a few weeks ago but kept getting side tracked then the holidays rolled around.

I started with cutting some angle for the frame of the shelf. Unfortunately, I had over stoked the wood burner up when I came back out this after noon. Between it being too hot and the UFC fight starting shortly, I decided to call it a night as I did get a few other things done too. I was going to lay the speakers on their side but I decided to stand them up.

Been following this thread a while - like what you're doing. My dad and myself have both been through Holy Loch during our Navy days - was your dad a submariner?

Enjoying the transformation from the start till now. Keep it up!

No, he wasn't a Submariner but he did work onthe dry docks, as an electrician I think.

Got the brackets all welded up last night

Wiped them down and hit them with some black spray paint. They're upside down drying.

Re: Garage Refurb

While the paint was drying, I removed the old corner shelves and started to check for studs to run the lag screws into.

After I drilled on hole, I tried to probe it to make sure there was a stud behind the OSB. I hit something soft, almost rubber like or plastic. I was afraid I hit some wiring, so I cut open teh wall to make sure. Fortunately it was just an old 1x6 behind the osb. I patched the area and brushed on some white paint.

Something you can tell is that is area is above the wood burner so it does get hit with some smoke. There's been a few times the wood burner has lost it's draft and smolders filling the garage up with smoke. That's one of the bad side of having an old wood burner. For what I can heat the place for during the winter using wood, I'll take the dust/smoke from the wood burner. My plan is by next season, have a new wood burner in place.

I still think we need a "like" button on the GJ. But then again, it might keep people from actually making a post. Nice "quick" wire pulling gig. Looks like the new shelves are more than adequate to support the larger speakers with no problem.

Nutts: well done. did you test the old speakers before deciding to do this? i'm betting you did or maybe i skimmed over where you said so. looks like the shelves are built to hold a big vise and if they held you that says it all.

also agree with DLC that was a cool idea for pulling speaker wire.

Have a great 2016

I was goping to try to take a picture of myself hanging fromteh shelf but my arms aren't long enough. I'm not sure the wife would take a picture of me hanging. . . . Sometimes she still doesn't understand me. :D

I've used the speakers before in my old bedroom at my parents house. Trust me, they work. :D

I wanted to make sure the shelves are built well. If that one fails in the picture above, the speaker will fall on to the drill press, then onto the Mustang.

That's a great shop that you have there. Not too far away is an old garage that is sitting on a rural corner and every time I drive by it, I want it to be mine. There's just something about those old auto garages and yours is coming along very well. Your house and porch are beautiful too.

I don't think you should be so hard on Teflon tape though. It always works well for me and I do a lot of work with it.:bounce:

I've often thought the same thing - particularly if your keyboard skills are as slow as mine.

I love the look of those speakers Eric - I have some very similar looking ones (but mine are Radio Shack).

Great work.

It just seems that teflon tape and I just don't get along. I usually roll it on the wrong way so it comes off as I'm threading the fittings together. Between that and it getting into a carb when I used it on fuel line, I try to steer clear of it.

I never cranked the music while my parents were home but I know they will work in my garage. ;)

We finally had some snow stick but it was just a dusting. The temps finally dropped into the teens for a couple of nights. So far,we still have plenty of fuel oil for the furnace. Usually in January, we are getting our tank topped off with 150 gallons or so and I have used a bunch of fire wood heating the garage. Unless Winter continues into late Spring, we should be ahead of the game.

Next time I'm in Ohio, I'll drop by with some beers and give you some pointers on using it. Little tip though, never let it get on the first complete thread and you'll be alright. There's more to it than that obviously like the correct direction but that is one thing I always have to show people.
