Rather than white Teflon (PTFE) tape you could try the yellow tape for gas line, it is double the thickness of the white tape and is less likely to fray than the white tape thus reducing the likelihood of strands getting into the liquid or gas stream in the pipe. Also when using the pipe dope on a joint that may have to come apart in the future you are setting yourself up for having to spend a lot of time cleaning out the threads. I've always done tape at home as it is just cleaner to work with and haven't had any problems. Now when I start my air line instal I may change my ways as I'll be using lots of unions.

Nutts: i'm pretty good at plumbing when i'm doing a project that is more than a couple minute or half hour job. since i don't do it often just finding the tools and remembering what i probably almost or did forget is the issue. of course the trips to the hardware store to get parts 3 times during a small job is the pain.

once you get used to the teflon tape it's pretty nice to work with or a little jar of plumber's putty with a little brush might last for years and just have a wet rag handy.

hope the speakers work and you get to crank some tunes in the shop. i'm still playing VHS taped movies in my shop, but it makes time pass ok.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully the airline is done for me and it doesn't have to come back aprt any time in the near future.

Unfortunately, I got sidetracked and didn't get any garage time. Unless something drastic happens, the speakers should be in use tomorrow.

Well a few days later due to my issue of not figuring up the correct length of speaker wire, I finally got the speakers wired up. I honestly though I bought a spool of shortened speaker wire. I took the section I already had put up completely and pulled it down. I measured it along with the leftover piece and it was 100' long. Some how, some where I screwed up my math or measuring and felt like a *******.

The mounts look great, as for the wire it ***** when you have a brain fart, but we all do it.

Instead of teflon tape I use rector seal, it works well and you do not have to worry about what way you put it on.

LOL, I'm not sure where the talk of teflon tape came from, maybe when I was doing my airlines 2 years ago.

The golden rule (measure twice, cut once) is something that we all forget sometimes Eric - which is one of the reasons why I prefer building with steel (have you ever tried to inconspicuously make a 3x2 longer??? ).

The speakers look good up there.

LOL, I have a buddy that thinks the same way. He leaves the wood building stuff to me and says he can always weld another piece steel in if he makes something too short.

Even after measuring it, it still doesn't seem like a run that is 69 feet long. the tape measure doesn't lie

I bought another roll of wire and the project is done. They work and are still up there this morning when I started a fire in the woodburner.

I started yesterday with breaking out the older Lincoln arc welder I got from family that had passed away. Little did I realize or just a lack of memory, recall that it needed a 50 amp circuit. After digging around inteh garage, I found wire, a new plug and receptacle. I was missing the breaker so I picked one up last night. Once I came in, I realized an error I had made and along with some advice of some great GJ members, the problem was resolved this morning after a trip to towm.

New 50 amp breaker for the circuit, which required a trip to Menard's and side trip to Starbucks for a coffee for the wife. . . . 2 slices of lemon pound cake for me.


I mounted it below the breaker box. I can reach where I normally weld and outside if need be.



EDIT: Thanks to posting a picture and advice from Wylie over in the electrical section. He pointed out that the receptacle I put in is wrong. It was something I had along with a plug and thought it was for this project but I might be wrong. The receptacle shown is a 10-50 but what I need is a 6-50R (like the outlet on the right) and corresponding plug for the welder. I will be getting the correct parts and swapping them out this weekend.

I have one location for the welder/cutter plug. But I also have an extension cord for the 220 line. It will reach anywhere in the shop and pretty far outside the door.

The trick is to not make it too long.

The trick is to not make it too long.

I already had a spot to plug in the wire feed but that only required a 20 amp breaker. It wouldn't have been enough for the Lincoln arc welder so I had to put in another outlet. I do have an extension cord for the Hobart but not one for the Lincoln. I'll cross that bridge if and when the the time comes.

Keep an eye out on cragslist, you may be able to find a large SO cord, that is what I use for my extension cord.

There's a recycling place about 15 minutes from here I need to get back to and check out. It's where I bought the cord for my Hobart and a buddy bought an 8/3 cord for his welder there.

Honestly around here I doubt there is much on CL, most of that stuff goes right to the scrap yard due to the thieving drug addicts. I can check out the scrap yards too.

I know you metioned earlier in the thread the entire garage project is funded by OT, but does that funding pay for the lemon pound cake? If is fuel for the working man.

Actually, the wife paid for the trip to Starbucks. I paid for the BK we had on the way there. I didn't finish the last third of my chicken sandwich as I found a hair. Appetite gone at that point but came back a short time later.

I'm not a coffee drinker but Starbucks Lemon Pound cake is some seriously good stuff. If you've never had it, I would recommend trying a slice.

A small update for today. As mentioned in a previous post, I needed to swap out a receptacle for the welder. That has been today along with the correct plug for the welder. I appreciate thet help and advise from the guys over in the Electrical section, they have been awesome in the past few days of my relentless idiot moments.

I couldn't resist, the real funny part is that is how I always do it, otherwise the cord goes up the wall. It drove me nuts at my Dad's shop, all of mine are upside down.
