Good morning my friends! Another beautiful morning here in SWFL. The build continues. A lot of the Purlins were put in yesterday on the end walls. The boss said I should have all the girts and purlins in by end of day tomorrow. Please enjoy the photos and I am learning everyday by watching and asking questions. My first comment was that I thought their first upright was going the wrong direction! Shows you what I know. At least they are a bit patient with me

So a couple tabs on the mains were welded in the the wrong position. The erector thinks they were measured from the bottom and not the top. Pictures below:

Purlin is in the right position tab is not.

i posted some pics of the verticals. I learned from the erector that the manufacturers cheap out. Basically you will see that the Mezzanine side has I beam verticals. When you look at the side with the 14x14 opening it is back to back C Bars (big ones) He said the labor to make the double C is probably more than making the I beam but who knows. If anyone is building a building I suggest you request I beams on all the verticals vs the C channel stuff / junk

Who did you end up using to erect?

I used a company called Medina Roofing. The guy, Juan, used to work for the company that originally quoted the entire job. I ended up buying the building from Buck and having him erect. So far there haven't been too many surprises but a few things had some strapping damage. I am going to try to get the plywood painted on the bottom for the mezzanine tomorrow so we can use the forklift to get the 25 sheets I need up there.

So I ordered the subfloor for the mezzanine. I realized I am going to have to paint the underside before installing and I want to get it done so we can use the skid steer to get the 25 or so sheets up on the mezzanine. I ordered the floor from Lowes and they will deliver for $80 which is a good deal.


I am trying to narrow down the color of the underside of the floor. I realized only after I brought the samples home that the steel for the mezzanine is really dark. I am afraid if I do a dark color it will darken the workshop space pretty badly.

That is just a shop coat primer on the bar joists. I would be inclined to spray everything after it is up a nice bright color.

Yeah I could spray it - not sure what to do there but im gonna lay out the boards and have them painted. I have to spray foam the entire building after its all done and the floor is epoxied... The quote I got locally was $10,800 for a floor - seems high

+1 spray the underside once installed a bright color. Makes lighting much easier. I would use something like Kilz on it right now to prime before install. Not sure what kind of Ply you bought but without a good primer it will bleed through.

So my erectors didn't show up yesterday. They had another job to off load!

I purchased the needed wedge anchor and I bought a basic grey olympic stain for the wood. The lady at the paint desk at Lowes was helpful and suggested it. It is a latex sealer. Looks nice. We started working on it yesterday. I say we but I got some guys to do the work

Well I dont know whats hes welding up let alone the rods hes using and the thickness of the materials but honestly that's a tiny machine to me n I would be inspecting all the welds for my personal safty. But im really a ***** when it comes to building something fyi.

I don't know too much about the welding but I hope it works Fingers Crossed!

Below are some pics from yesterdays work. Man doors installed - I now realize the door on the South wall that will be with all the windows needs to have a window in it. Given my impact and wind requirements this will happen after my C.O.

Also you can see the window jambs and frames for the windows to be held up. Also we used the skid steer to get the bunk (not quite) of plywood and my exhaust fan damper apparatus.

The problem is a lot of the things are little - so it isn't terribly noticeable what is happening here but walls will go up soon!

So I answered the what is he welding with it is a 7018 stick. Is that any good?

Also you can see the bunk up on the mezzanine and the door on the long side. I called my county and they don't care which way the door swings. I asked my installer to flip them and even offered to pay to switch it. His head nearly exploded!

I find the outswing better for floor space. And they are stronger against wind and theft. Trying to kick in an outswing is a lot harder

I agree and as I look at it - I might have a problem with the way the sill works but I don't love the hinges on the outside and I might consider installing a strike to make the doors electric - but I don't think it would be secure if that strike is outside vs inside.

Hinges should be s security hinge. On the flat of the hinge should be a couple barbs sticking out. When closed make popped the door really tough even with the pins smashed out or cut.

But if it's the looks your not in love with totally get it

Edit. For the strike a cover plate would cover it and keep the boneheads out. We do a **** load at work

Yes I see it both ways for sure. Down here as you know most of the doors are outswing. This isn't a residence so I am not too worried about egress. I just hope the look improves and looks better, if my installer switches it.

Got ya. It was strange to me too when I moved here. Up in Canada we would inswing for egress in residential. When you got 4 feet of snow up against a door makes opening a little tough. Beside by opening in we could use the snow as a beer cooler.

The bridging angle at the bottom of the joists should be above the bottom cord. If you ever decide to put a hard lid under the joists the angle will be in the way. What is the plan for blocking at the ends of the joists? Backing of some sort for railing or walls?

7018 is a very good rod it what alot of oilfeild guys uses including myself. The 1st 2 number of the rod is the tension strenght x 10,000 making that weld is designed to hold up to 70,000 lbs n the last two nimbers is the hydrogen grade

I assume that you did it because you want it to look 'pretty' from below, but the 'Plugged & Sanded' side of the plywood that you painted is the side that is supposed to go up. Now you'll have to contend with the knot hole voids that will be facing up.

We stained both sides. The top side might end up going down since it will be storage over top. I have seen people epoxy the subfloor but thats really unnecessary. Either Way I think I will be happy.

So on Friday my erectors didn't show up. I was bored and I realized I had a water line running to the building so I went and got parts to put a hose spigot on the end. I got to use my pex tools which is fun but I had to use a push on coupler to get from 1" to 3/4" since my set doesn't go to 1". I have to find metal beam clamps to get things connected. If anyone has a good reference for these that would be helpful! I've been rooting around Graingers catalog.

Saturday was an exciting day because the wall panels started to go up. My erector continues to complain to me about how he under bid the job because mostly of the soffits.
