Even though the installation of several items is wrong in your building it isn't a problem since you have no snow load issues. For all the people that do have snow loads to consider nothing is to be attached to the bottom flange of the purlins. The only exception is small conduit and there are proper caddy clips to install that correctly.

Presuming that a collateral load is designed into the roof system all items should be attached to the side of the purlins. This failure is more common than you might think. I once had to repair a building where a video production company clamped light bars to the purlins for spotlights. The weight of the lights deformed the bottom flange which allowed the purlin to buckle and fail. There was about two feet of snow on the roof and in no time it was inside the building.

Simply get in the habit of attaching to the side of the purlin and everything should be okay.

Ahhhh wrote a post and Tapatalk crashed.

I was saying here’s my remotes I gorilla glued (because hot glue was no good with the rare earth magnets and then stick them on the side of the fridge. I use a Yamaha receiver that has multiple sources. One is a sonos device which doesn’t get used anymore. The best source is my amazon echo dot Bluetooth connected to the receiver. I can tell amazon to play Howard stern on Sirius XM or play Spotify and it just works! It pipes t all through out my shop via Bluetooth to the receiver and amplifies! It’s cheaper than a sonos box btw. Also I have the tv ear phone jack connected to the one input. So I can watch tv and hear throughout the shop!6c82419756d3a16084b354cc7187eece.jpg

So you are saying the lights shouldn't be attached to the bottom of the purlin? Is that the issue? I mean I have two screws #8 tek screws holding each light so I find it hard to believe that it would be compromised?

Perhaps my fan and camera mount with their 1/4" bolt are a bit larger but I am very curious what is typical - and yes I will never have snow :)

You don't have a problem. Clearly the trades in your area are unfamiliar with the fastening requirements for metal buildings. It really isn't an issue in your area. Somewhere on your plans there is a note indicating that nothing should be fastened to the bottom flange of the purlins.

My point was for people reading this thread that live in snow country. This issue is largely ignored in the industry. Even most inspectors are unaware of the requirements. The worst offenders are usually sparkys and HVAC guys hanging equipment. Strangely enough this info must get drilled into sprinkler fitters on the first day. Their stuff is always correct.

Wow thats interesting. Yes down here metal buildings are a real rarity. I actually tried to sell this building after it was on the truck on the way here to build it out of block instead. I don't regret this building at all but block would have been a lot easier :)

The electricians doing my work are residential guys anyway so even more so they don't have a clue. Its good information. I have seen hangers from purlin flanges. Are those ok? I did buy some magnet units for alarm wire but we ran it through the holes and I hope to god I never have to replace purlins after these 10 from the hurricane....

You don't have any issues unless something very heavy needs to be hung from the purlins. How much collateral load was designed into the roof? It will be on the cover sheet of the plans. For general lighting there is usually 1-3 pounds designed into the roof framing.

I was thinking about running standard corrugated panels on the inside of the ceiling to pretty things up. Seems like it would be a lot of work and probably a no no to screw in to the bottom of the purlins....

Your shop turned out awesome.

I like the usage of flooring on the walls and the bolted together mobile toolboxes. Good ideas.

Thanks! I have a lot of free time to think about things I shouldn't do :)

I really want to get some Lista Boxes. I have a dream about having a tall lista box at the end of my island workstation. Its just so gosh darn expensive and the delivery (especially residential) is very high.

I had looked at Saber cabinets and the shipping was so bad it just didn't make sense. i really had a different vision for the entire interior of the shop in the workbench area but between the cost of the cabinets and shipping and then the storm hitting and me wanting things that were more mobile I didn't pull the trigger.

I still have a lot of free wall space. I am looking at a car lift now to put my tractors on. I haven't pulled the trigger but I probably will very soon.

I was looking at my shop and I bought a couple winches that are 120v powered. I really want to put one next to my scissor lift and use it to hoist large items up on the mezzanine. Readhead I wonder if you have an opinion on how best to mount this. I was thinking of putting the house on a wall or the red iron column and then use a pulley above the lift point. Just not sure where to mount it specifically. Red Iron I guess?

Even 29ga liner panel will exceed your collateral load. 1/2 pound is the token amount to cover light fixtures. I'm guessing collateral load was never part of the conversation. That is why I always assign between 1-3 pounds to cover changes like this.

I don't see a problem mounting it next to a column for stability as long as it ultimately is bearing on the floor since there is a large chunk of concrete under the column.

Thanks tweaek I spent a lot of time and expressed my elation and frustrations as things went by. The hardest part was for sure the hurricane.

Readhead so I can't line the ceiling huh? Bad idea? I think it would be more work than its worth. Also I have insulation sprayed up there so Im sure thats adding weight to the system :-/

The problem is how do I mount to the red iron and my issue is the red iron is overtop of my mezzanine so I don't know how to get the wire rope out to the lower floor? Not sure that makes sense.... I can try to take better pics of my issue but I looked it over today a little.

I'm reposting a pic from the previous page. This is the red iron over the opening but it sits even with the floor below it. I don't know how well I could mount the house to this red iron (and I would have to make something with pipe or strut) but it would stop on the mezzanine floor up above. The red iron is actually inside the edge of the mezzanine below.

Look here too. There is a depth issue in the picture but hopefully you can see where I want to be:

I'm picturing some kind of rotating arm on a post bearing on the concrete and attached to the column at the top. It would swing over the edge and the hoist could be on a trolley or fixed with a block at the end of the arm.

Yeah it’s the angled iron for the roof support. I’m not sure I totally understand but the best I could find online searchingnsjowed those arms. I covered the one vertical holding up the mezzanine but it only goes up to the floor so it wouldn’t help me get high enough. Frustrating.

I was just looking at the pictures and I thought about buying a 6" tall I beam that would run between the two sets of red iron inside the roof parallel to the purlins. The only issue is it would be at an angle but I think the hoist can handle that angle. It would be a far span - 20+ feet. Any thoughts on that?

So I spoke with readhead yesterday and today I went to the garage with a big scraper to try to chip away at this insulation. I think its made of concrete. I am truly in BIG trouble. The scraper extension handle broke which really *****. There are bolts covered by the insulation. I am at a loss on how I will get rid of it. I am thinking about getting this milwaukee scraper blade. I might also try taking a wall panel out and seeing how banging the stuff from the back side works with a hammer or something?

Do you have any info you could share with me on how you built this railing? Looking to build something similar for our loft in the living quarters.

So after talking to readhead yesterday we went over my harness requirements. In the middle of sleeping it dawned on me last night that I have a pipe I had powder coated laying in the backyard for another project that was extra. Attached are pictures. It is aluminum but very stout.

It is 18 foot tall which is perfect really. The question is going to be how to affix it to the red iron and then how to affix the motor to the pipe.

Let me know if you have thoughts. I really want to put the pipe in the mezzanine or maybe I leave it in front of the doorway and use it as a firemans pole albeit HUGE!

Yes I will get you some pictures of details. I am pressure sure we pocket screwed the frames together on the inside like a picture frame. The wire came in 4x8 or 4x10 sheets from McNichols it is a 3x3 mesh with a .192" wire. They are 4x10s and cost $75 each without shipping. Freight to here was a fortune :(

The cedar posts are from Cedar Creek. THey are 8x8's and came in like 10' lengths. We cut them down and then I used 1x4s from Home Depot for the frames and base molding on each column.

My electrician is here replacing the two bad lights once he goes I will jump up there and get some detail shots for you. Let me know if you have specific questions. We bolted the 8x8's to the Red Iron with carriage bolts. On the space above the bathroom since it was a flat floor I got some Simpson right angle brackets to support it. I also think they toe-screwed it down. Its definitely not as sturdy up there vs the red iron.

Hey guys sorry I got ******* working on the lights on my new drop down running boards. The little lights that came with it just didn't cut it. I replaced them with some tape lights and the different is night and day almost literally :)

So I took pic of the railing (sorry for the delay. The front and back are each built like a picture frame and pocket screwed together on the inside. First the bottom piece was pocket screwed to the 6x6. The. The outside frame was set and the. Pocket screwed to the 6x6. Then the wire mesh was place in and the back frame is pinned to the front frame. The pins are on the back side so the look didn’t matter.

Sure I have a kreg tool for pocket screwing and it is a great tool to have. We used it for building the barn door to the bathroom. It is a handy tool. There are smaller kits but I see my tools and good investments!

Part arrived yesterday for my repair. Of course important pieces are missing but we should have enough stuff to replace the purlins and roof which is basically all I care about at this point!

Well repairs are mostly completed. I have some odds and ends that needs fixing up but just wanted to give a brief update. I put my house on the market. After the hurricane I think Im just rattled and don't know what to do. Would be a shame to sell this just about a year after completing. I don't know where I am going to put ALL the stuff I have in here. Probably a BIG yard sale :(

NC is just as risky to get a hurricane as FL. the tree is gone and done. not like it can fall again.

We were without power for 12 days. We have a generator but then you start to get concerned that you will run out of propane. Its a stressful situation for sure!
