I dont do lists. But the second they were gonna toss a whiteboard out from the hospital I grabbed it and have really enjoyed using it for the shop. Keeps my incoming clients on my mind so I dont forget who is gonna show up while I am eating dinner.

It was about time to start working in my shop and making money, instead of working on the shop and spending money. To do that, I needed a welding bench. I found one on Facebook for much less than the materials cost to build one, the only catch being it had been sitting topside down in the weeds for who knows how long. It needed some work.
20181126_215551.jpg20181126_215604 (1).jpg

So I started cleaning it up using a 4.5" grinder and a stripper disc.

A 4 !/2" flap disk will clean a lot of rust.

First thing I thought of was Miami Dolphin. Second thing I thought of was the specialty screws that the name of escapes me at the moment.

I dig the logo though, but those were my first thoughts when I saw the logo.

Bottle openers? That's the first thing I thought of as I sit here with a Miller Light 🤣

The company I work for uses those same colors, they pair well.

Looks like handlebars or a steering wheel.

Come on! It's been like 18 hours, spill the beans 🤣🤣

Thanks guys!

Sorry @Boostingaz I won't be spilling the beans until they are on the website and ready for order! You might be disappointed though, they aren't something you could use currently.

A very kind internet friend of mine and fellow Fusion CAD/rendering nerd recently gifted me something amazing and unique - a toy 3D model of my truck! His name is Michael Provost (@mikestudio56 on Instagram) and he makes these models for fun in his free time. He doesn't take commissions, which makes this surprise gift that much more special. Mike is able to accomplish some really amazing modeling feats for a CAD software (as opposed to a 3D modeling software like @LeonardY would use), so naturally he and I have had several conversations on the topic.

Here are the renderings that Mike presented me, done in the Fusion rendering space:
462558252_930127615609200_6293553876084925962_n.png
462524590_881241613942954_9029455252825168987_n.png

He then sent me the CAD file for the truck, and I wasted no time getting it brought into Blender for a rendering more "fancy" than is possible with Fusion's limited tools.

I had an absolute blast making this rendering using the model he made for me:
Mike's Toy Model 004.jpg

I've talked with some friends of mine about how unique it is to receive a "handmade" digital gift like this. I have a great appreciation for it, knowing just how much effort has gone into it's creation. Mike's eye for proportions and the "toy" aesthetic are fantastic! Having the solid model file for this means that I can absolutely turn this into a 3D printed, tangible model - which I can't wait to do!

Now that he's been presented with his surprise, I can reveal the model I made of Mike's Jeep as a thank you gift for the model he made of my truck in the previous post. I had a ton of fun making this model!

Here is a photo of Mike's Jeep:
Mike's Jeep.jpg

Here are some Fusion renderings of the final model:
Mike Provost Jeep Model 127.jpg
Mike Provost Jeep Model 128.jpg
Mike Provost Jeep Model 126.jpg
Mike Provost Jeep Model 124.jpg
Mike Provost Jeep Model 109.jpg
Mike Provost Jeep Model 114.jpg

And a fun cutaway composite I made using two Fusion renders:
Mike Provost Jeep Model Cutaway 01.jpg

And I couldn't help but bring the model into Blender for some extremely quick and dirty renders. I did the bare minimum here, but you can see the quality difference between the Fusion render space and Blender's:
Mike Provost Jeep Model 137.jpg
Mike Provost Jeep Model 138.jpg

I don't know if I've ever had so much fun creating a 3D model before, or working on any project for that matter. Although almost all of my design projects give me intense creative control, I'm always designing an object that will be used outside of the digital space for something. In this case, I was simply creating a fun, stylized and exaggerated 3D model. That meant I could just reference photos online and interpret things however I wanted. I didn't have to worry about nailing dimensions or perfectly capturing details - I could use my own artistic discretion. This was so freeing from a modeling perspective and kept me extremely focused and engaged during the entire process.

Jeep Wranglers are deceptively complicated from a modeling perspective. Yes, the body is very simple and boxy, but there are soooo many doodads and details that are stuck on that simple body that would normally be hidden or at least blended in on a modern vehicle. Details such as hinges, hood latches, fenders, gas door, spare tire area, even the protruding taillights seemed to never end as I worked my way through this model. Don't get me wrong though, I was loving it! I took each new detail as an opportunity to replicate the part as quickly and efficiently as possible while maintaining the overall look of the part I was wanting.

The chassis and drivetrain are pretty loose in terms of accuracy and detail, I just had fun with it. The wheels and tires though, I did try to nail the details. The wheels are quite a simple overall design, but I challenged myself to capture every angle, meaning nothing is a square 90. The tires (BFG A/T KO2's) were a very fun challenge to replicate, especially with the hyper exaggerated tread width.

I'm really pleased with how everything came out. Mike, the recipient, expressed his appreciation and recognized an important point, one that was a large driving force behind my gift to him: Mike has made so many of these cartoon models for others, but he has never had one done for him. I'm so glad I was able to reciprocate the amazing gift he gave me.

There are so many more details I could show/post about (I made over 130 in process renderings), let me know if you'd like to see more! To my delight and appreciation, Autodesk Fusion requested to make a post detailing and revealing this model to Mike! You can check it out here on Instagram if you'd like.

Thanks for looking, guys.

I saw the IG post and had to come over here to hopefully learn more! Incredible work and your attention to details to get it right even when nobody will know it's slightly off is unmatched!

Super cool.

That's very kind of you to say! I'd be glad to share more, this project is honestly much larger than I initially expected it would be haha.

These screenshots aren't the best, but I have turned visibility on for every one of the dozens and dozens of sketches:
Mike Provost Jeep Model 139.jpg

Here are some wireframe looking screenshots as well that I think highlight the details in a unique way:
Mike Provost Jeep Model 130.jpg

Mike Provost Jeep Model 133.jpg

And lastly, some closer up shots of the wheel/tire setup (peep the logo on the sidewall lugs):

I appreciate your interest! I have big plans for a similar 3D modeling project in the near future that many of you here will get a kick out of, I think.

Hey - my friends and I all have the same car. I pay $200 just to have an artist change the colors on a vector drawing to make a poster that I send to my friends.

The models and renderings you made would be worth thousands to me. I’d recommend seeking commissions if you enjoy the work and have time. Not currently in the market but I know where to go next time I’m looking for a big thank you gift to a friend.

Here’s an example of maybe $500 in work in the original commission (credit to 8380 labs - I paid for these):

Super cool!!

Not sure if you do commission work, but would definitely be interested in having one of my cars done at some point!

Thank you very much guys. Your interest is a high compliment! Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I could realistically do this on a commission basis. Although I purposely did not keep track of the hours I had into the Jeep, I can safely estimate that it was very near 100 hours. There's just no way I could expect someone to pay for that much time, just to receive some silly renderings of a vehicle. Not to mention, there are already several guys on Instagram doing similar vehicle models with cartoon proportions extremely well.

@fourmotioneer , thank you for sharing that vector work you commissioned! I looked up the artist and he's very skilled and has a cool style. That's very neat of you to support artists to create unique, custom gifts for your friends.

I have more plans for this, but it won't be commission based and it probably won't involve vehicles.

After moving the old table out, the Eames designed Conference table turned dining table made it's way into our home.

IMG_5249.JPGThough simple, it has a striking mid century appeal that is a match for the aesthetic we're trying to cultivate in our home. Hopefully some day we will have an example of the iconic Eames chair to match our Eames table!
ok hear me out. I love the house but that TV looks, well, "out of place." So how about doing something like this guy did:IMG_8282.JPG

My wife and I will be off to Las Vegas soon to check out the SEMA show for a couple of days and see the mini monster truck that I designed several parts on for my customer, Overkill Racing and Chassis. If you're at the show, make sure you let me know so we can shake hands!

The truck is located in central hall-EL07 if you are there to see it in person!

I designed the bumpers, grille, side window scoops, and the exhaust tips.

Well, we got home from Vegas Sunday evening. It was a memorable experience for sure. I took almost no photos while I was there - in fact I barely used my phone the entire vacation other than to order Uber rides. The SEMA show itself was about as insane as I expected it would be, although we were able to see a good majority of the inside booths in our two days of walking around. We didn't even see half of what was outside, but I was okay with that. My interest in cars has diminished pretty steeply as I've gotten older, and it's pretty easy to get desensitized to your surroundings at a place like that. I found it very easy to walk past million dollar plus builds with just a glance. The vehicles that caught my attention were the more unusual ones, like a wild 3rd gen Cummins build by Firepunk Diesel. All I can find right now is this YouTube video by someone at the show (no idea who it is recording)

The mini monster truck got a lot of appreciation at the show, despite a less than optimal parking spot out in the hallway in a dim area under an escalator. People really liked the rear end.

We had quite an adventure on Friday night following the SEMA parade/cruise where the truck actually died right in front of the Wynn hotel on the strip with active traffic. My wife and I acted as human cones directing traffic around the truck and recovery vehicles for over an hour on Las Vegas Blvd as they eventually winched the truck up on to the transport trailer. It was an insane experience - something I'll definitely always remember. To my surprise, traffic was extremely cooperative and things went about as smooth as winching a 7,000 lb monster truck onto a trailer in the middle of the strip could possibly go.

Overall, I feel grateful to have experienced SEMA as it's something I've wanted to see since I was a kid. I think a trade show like Fabtech or IMTS would be more up my alley in terms of my interests and networking potential, however.

Never been to SEMA, but in terms of coolness and wow factor...IMTS beats Fabtech in my book. The scale of IMTS is just insane. Next time it comes around I want to go to the Mining show that's every 3 or so years in Vegas to see some of the heavy duty mining rigs etc in person. No professional reason...but giant mining haul trucks...in person....yes!

We took a second before riding off in the bed of the tow vehicle to snap a few photos. You are looking at the left lane as well as both turn lanes for Genting Blvd completely blocked by the mini monster truck and the kind Porsche that stopped and offered a lot of help, including all of the rigging and winch required to drag the truck on to the trailer. (The mini has a winch in the front bumper, but the cable was not installed in time for the show...)

Good to know! The one other time I've been to Vegas was at the construction expo there in 2011 I think? I assume it's similar to the mining show.

Wow what a mess! Good thing they were nice enough to help ya out. Do you know what killed the monster truck? I've followed Overkill for awhile now and have been watching the couple of these they've built now. Logan, when the mining show comes around, be sure to remind me. It would be a badass show to go check out.

It was the highlight of the trip for me, but I also didn't build the truck and wasn't trying to diagnose it in the middle of traffic... The owner of the shop (Joel) was in good spirits about it, but I'm sure he was stressed. I asked today if they had gotten to the bottom of it and was told that it is most likely the ignition coil. They have a new one on order but it hasn't arrived yet. Aside from the misfortune of breaking down, the truck truly is incredible. No photos or videos can do it justice - you really have to see it in person. There was a full size, Monster Jam truck at the show as well, and it was fun to compare the two. There are a lot of similarities, but the full size one is obviously a stripped down, dedicated performance vehicle where as the mini has a lot of creature comforts (air conditioning, sealed cab, power windows, power steps, heated and cooled seats, upholstered interior, etc). The 632ci big block with insane 8:1-1:2 exhaust sounded incredible, it rattled your chest just idling!

SEMA is definitely a fun time. The mini monster truck looks really cool build and that truck looks crazy. Looks like you definitely had a fun and memorable time even if it wasn't normally what would be desired to make memories from.

I went back in college almost 20 years ago now when our car club I showed with back in those days got picked to build a car for Scion when they were trying to get attention for the brand from the tuner segment. I really would like to go again some year.

We'll have to put it a couple years out on the calendar, it was this September and looks like next show is in Sept 26 to 28, 2028:

For a cool social account to follow with big equipment stuff, check out BuildWitt on Instagram(and probably others)

He's built a media company around capturing the "Dirt world" from mining to road building to any sort of major project and he does stuff all over the world. Super well done and some giant stuff he gets to see, film etc

I forgot to share that I once again survived installing Christmas lights on our house. I took advantage of what was probably our last 60 degree day to brave the climb and get them hung. I'll be back in a few months to do it in reverse.

More on topic for this forum, I'm working on a cool new project! I'm about to start printing the first test prototypes of this functional, mini vise Christmas ornament. Thumbs up for scale:

Here are the results so far of the first prototype prints. I'm so happy with it! I was quite nervous about how well some of these tiny details would print, but my expectations have been exceeded! The black components are PLA-CF, the silver slide is PETG.
