Parts Washer??

Hi,

I would like to buy a part washer... How do I get started?
Whats the Pros and cons?

There is some descent information here on what type of solvent to use. Unfortunately I can't advise you on that as mine came with it. I happened to pick mine up at a liquidation from a business going under. Its a safety kleen parts washer with a cleaning unit and only set me back $150. I think it may be more expensive for them to get rid of it because of the hazardous waste issue hence the low price (or I just got lucky).

What are you trying to clean? You can also look at the harbor freight ones and there is also the diesel fuel in the bucket option. Have you considered a sonic washer for small parts?

Ultra sonic seems way expensive!?

mostly small parts with gunk and grease!

I have the "large" hf ultra sonic. Got it with the 20% off for $50. Works awesome. Usually let the part soak for a bit then do 3-4 cycles then soak for an hour then a final cycle. Works amazing. For the solution I use half water 1/4 orange cleaner or 409, and a bit of vinegar for rust.

Keep an eye on your local CL for parts washers. I picked up a year old HF one a few months back that was only used a couple times for a whopping $20. Still have not used it. But it was so cheap I couldn't pass it up!

i picked up a 20 gallon hf one for $55 not too long ago. can't tell you how good it works cause i haven't had a chance to use it yet

Just curious, anyone ever use Dawn dishwashing soap for the fluid? It is designed to cut grease and oil. Does it well too.

Once you use a good parts washer you will be spoiled. An industrial, regularly serviced parts washer is a LOT different than a unit for the home garage. Cleaning solvents are expensive. I bought the HF unit. They sell identical units at Tractor supply and some local parts stores. Thes imported units are OK. The pumps on these units ae suspect at best, but mine has worked for a couple of years now. There is a wealth of information in the threads on this site. Good luck!
