Well this popped up on Craigslist yesterday so I had to run grab it. Missing it's casters, both side handles and the front cover but for $40 I was certainly not going to argue! It has the missing handle in a drawer. This is the first one I have ever seen in person. Interesting to note it has an 11/66 date stamped into the front edge just like Waterloo did with the craftsman boxes they were making at this same time. This further solidifies my theory that Waterloo made these in my opinion. I would love to find a 7 drawer wrinkle finish version some day but in the mean time, this will do! And yes I paid full asking price😂

Congrats, as we know a hard box to find in any condition, especially at that price.
Thanks! It’s not a going to win any beauty pageants with its missing parts but it’s so uncommon I am glad to have it! I know of one local that was heavily damaged and overpriced and have seen a few others listed for sale out of state but nothing local! I would love to find some replacement parts to complete it one day

Pictures out of my 1961 catalog of the tool mobile. I don’t have any newer Proto catalogs but they most likely didn’t change…the light feature is so cool! Mine has the holes drilled for it but no light or signs of ever being mounted. Anyone ever seen one?

Been sorting my swap meet finds by brand. The amount of tools I pulled this year was nuts, especially from one particular vendor who was literally selling tools by the pound. I will post more pictures once cleaned up. This is just my Proto la box, not including my Proto mfd box. It was a good swap ! Spares will certainly be for sale.

Whitworth I know, is British Standard the same as SAE?
No. S.A.E. and BS/BSF were developed for the same reason, as a finer thread count alternative to the coarser U.S.S./Am.Std. and Whitworth, respectively. But I don't think they're the same.

An old Blackhawk UK export catalog says the milled and broached openings (i.e., Across-the-Flats (AF) diameter) on those W/BS combos should be 7/16, 9/16, 5/8, 3/4, and 13/16, and a Britool catalog cites the AF openings as .445, .525, .600, .710, and .820 in decimal inches.

It's never simple. The dimensions across flats of these will be as in the Britool catalogue, but there are 2 standards of Whitworth.

The original Whitworth standard sizes were changed as metal quality improved. All 'Whitworth' sizes refer to the diameter of the thread.
To begin with we had plain Whitworth, then later on (maybe around the beginning of WW2 I think?) a new British Standard Whitworth came out which moved all the sizes one step smaller, so all the existing wrenches still fitted and could be used but the AF dimension of the fasteners was that of the previously smaller size.
A British Standard Whitworth 1/2" is the same as the older Whitworth 7/16", hence the dual markings on these wrenches of piehammmer's.

These particular wrenches have nothing to do with BSF, (British Standard Fine) which is a fine thread version of the usual coarse thread AF sizes, but they are also usually made 'one step down' so a smaller size AF nut if it's fine thread.

I degreased my Proto tool mobile yesterday and mounted some new casters under it as well. I was looking at the modular system for drawer mounting inside it. Looks like you could move the drawers to wherever you wanted them to or could buy different drawers based on your different needs. I think this one must have been a 3 drawer top chest with the lower compartment cover similar to jocosawdust’s? Looks like there is a door stop on the right inner portion of the lower cabinet. Too bad this is missing the cover. The cabinet and drawers actually cleaned up pretty nicely for how horrible they looked in photos.

Pictures of said tool mobile I was referencing. Does this have a date on it? Lower left hand corner above the front caster.

Got the old tool mobile degreased, polished and waxed. It was absolutely filthy. It’s certainly not perfect but it looks a lot better now and I am not embarrassed to put my Proto collection that doesn’t fit on my boards in it. Got drawer liners in and sprayed the roller system with a dry Teflon lubricant. For anyone who hasn’t seen these roller bearing slides, they look identical to the early red and gray craftsman roller bearing units. I would love to find a cover and the missing side handles but I’m not holding my breath by any means. It has taken me years just to find this one.

That sure turned out looking nice!
Thanks. It was probably the quickest one I have cleaned in a while. I hit it with some degreaser and then hot and soapy water and plastic scrub brush. After that polished the outside and drawer faces and then quick wax. I wanted it clean so if I rubbed up against it on accident I wouldn’t get dirty 😂

I mentioned in the Williams thread that I was helping a friend organize things for a future Estate Sale.
Lots of cool vintage tools

I went home with some Proto punches

There's a set of three Proto ball peens (piens?), small, med, and large that I might buy.
But darn it, I have PLENTY of hammers right now. Don't have any more room in the roll away.

There are several Williams screw drivers and I think there's a couple of Protos too...
And once again, I have no need for more screwdrivers!
