Got the letter from the town last week, that the code dept. is in the process of doing fire safety inspections again. (Supposed to do them every 3 years, it's been about 10 years since the last one).

OK, time to get the extinguishers tested, and re-certified....
So I had the local Fire equip. guy stop by to take my 5lb extinguishers and test/re-certify them. He looked at them, and he says "these are on recall, I can't do anything with them". Then he said some guys have sent in 5lb units, and Kiddie sends back 2.5lb units.......WTF?

I'm going to go thru the process of doing the recall, and see what happens.
It will **** to get smaller ones back if that's the case.

I must be missing something here.

The recalled Kidde extinguishers were all non-serviceable. I'm not sure about your area, but around here, none would have been acceptable for commercial (inspected) service.

Also, you don't send in to Kidde. You request a replacement. They send you a replacement based on the model number you submit, and they request that you return the recalled unit in the packaging that came with your replacement.

After I put my info about my recalled fire extinguisher on Kidde web site I figured I would get an email saying they received my info, but I got nothing. Is this normal?

Kiddie fire extinguisher recall

I havent seen this posted anywhere on here yet.
Kiddie is recalling 40+ million fire extinguishers

If you have one of the recalled units, you should immediately contact Kidde to request a free replacement. Call Kidde at (855) 271-0773 or visit the company's website for more information. Visit cpsc.gov/recalls or Kidde.com to see if your fire extinguisher is affected.

Re: Kiddie fire extinguisher recall

As an update to this, I received an email from Kidde today about the two fire extinguishers that I have that are on their recall list.

They said that due to the high demand for replacements, that they now have a huge backorder to fill, and they could not verify when I would be getting my replacements.

So, if anyone filled out the information about getting a recalled extinguisher replaced, it may be a while before you get a new one.

The 3A40BC 5lb units that I have here in my machine shop were bought new
in 2001. They were 'serviced' and pressure checked and tagged as 'good' in 2011.
(By a fire equipment company that does that sort of work) Shortly after that, the town Fire Inspector came thru, and seemed to be fine with them. They are also on the recall list, and I submitted them this morning. So.....I don't know if or what you're missing, but that's what's happened on my end.

Re: Kiddie fire extinguisher recall

I heard there are 37 million units to be replaced and shipped (2 ways) at Kidde's expense. Have to wonder how they can stay in business.

I received mine this past Sat, all in all, took about 3 weeks. I must have been a lucky one. I did it all on line, had to use my PC ( iPhone was a no go) .

Re: Kiddie fire extinguisher recall

I learned of the recall through GJ. Filled out an on-line application via the Kiddie website, and received my new extinguisher 3 weeks later. Still have to send back the old one - just haven't had time.

I'm waiting for one more, the 5th of 5. They've been sending larger ones that what you are turning in. I got a 5# for a 3, and an 8# for a 3#. Not a bad deal.

Re: Kiddie fire extinguisher recall

I called a couple days after it started for my two recalled units. Four weeks later still no replacements, so called again and got someone who at least sounded interested. Been two weeks now, so I was wondering what was going on. Now I know.

Hmm, I got the message when I did this, that it'd be 3-4 weeks I think, but nothings shown up. And I can't find the email now.

Hopefully something just turns up in the post.

Re: Kiddie fire extinguisher recall

They will refurbish them and resell......

I think in the end they wont. They would pretty much have to remove everything that make them work, clean them out, sandblast them to remove existing labels and paint, repaint, refill and refit with new mechanisms. In the end, from a money standpoint, much cheaper just to make new ones and scrap the old ones.

I applied for two extinguishers on Nov 2, received a 'delay' email last week...and just learned the replacements shipped today, to arrive next week.

7 weeks total

Im guessing a lot of the hit or miss may be due to which specific models you have....

Filled out the online form for 4 units when it first hit this forum. Have received the 2 larger ones so far. Still waiting on the 2 smaller kitchen/vehicle size units.

Just noticed this. My kitchen extinguisher is on the list. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm really glad that I went in whole hog on a Zoro deal for some Amerex extinguishers a couple years back and am not relying on this Kidde very heavily.

I have a couple of the Amerex Halotron extinguishers for the pony cars. They do have better build quality than the Kidde, but Kidde is perfect for average home/business use.

So what's the potential liability of Kidde when you habe a fire and all you have on hand are 5 "recalled" extinguishers while you are waiting on replacements?

Not sure I'd be waiting if it were me.

Received another one of the replacements.

A 2A-10BC in place of a 1A-10BC. Metal handles, valve, and bracket and a discharge hose instead of just a nozzle on the end of the valve.

Two down, three to go.

I notified them of my 6 Kidde units about 5 weeks ago. Last week, I received 6 new replacements and sent back the old ones. My old ones were at least 15 years old.

Another one showed up.

Again, a 2A:10BC unit. Different label/ name than the last one, looks the same though.

Three down and two more to go.
