Got my bag of clamps, and my price protection. :) The matching clamps I got a year or two ago had yellow pads, and the new set has red pads; they are otherwise identical, and all work fine.

Chat went smoothly once I got in, but there was a brief queue. It said I was #3 in queue when I started, and claimed a 55-minute wait time estimate. The estimate was completely wrong and I was in after about 5 minutes. Just FYI if anyone else gets discouraged by those estimates, they're way too high and should be ignored, but the queue position numbers are correct.

I believe that the Craftsman Evolv was the discount brand started in the 1990s at Sears with limited warranty and Made in Taiwan vs the US-made regular Craftsman.

Oh, and I have two sets Evolv 1/2" metric impact sockets on rails in hand from the early 2000s made in Taiwan and they're still going strong, albeit having some easily removed surface rust. That said, I'm looking at the packaging: it says "limited lifetime warranty" and you need the original purchase receipt to warranty it. I checked your link and Sears says nothing about that nowadays. Anyone know for sure?

Yes, Evolv was started when Taiwan was considered a downgrade from the US-made mainline Craftsman. Now some of the Evolv stuff is China too, but the ones that are still from Taiwan are probably better than the equivalent mainline Craftsman item, lol.

The Evolv hammer (which is made in China) that I just bought last week, which was manufactured in May 2019, says this on the back of the package:

" Craftsman Evolv Hand Tool Lifetime Limited Warranty
This warranty covers any defects in manufacturing in your Craftsman Evolv Hand Tool. The warranty lasts as long as you own your Craftsman Evolv Hand Tool. Return your defective Craftsman Evolv Hand Tool to any Sears store or other Craftsman Evolv outlet in the United States with your proof of purchase for free repair or replacement. This hand tool is not covered by the Craftsman Hand Tool Forever Full Warranty. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. "

So yes, you need 'proof of purchase' (whether a physical receipt, order confirmation email, or account history) for Evolv tools. I have not had a need to try a warranty claim to see if they actually enforce that, though. But I don't put much stock in Sears tool warranties these days anyway - even if they want to honor it, they won't have a comparable replacement available in many cases - or sometimes not even a vaguely-related replacement.

Cool. Apparently that runs through 11/16. Is it being applied in a way that prevents other freecash or coupons from being used at the same time as it?
Unfortunately it is applied as a coupon and appears to be blocking the surprise points I have.

Thanks.

I always like a back-up. Sears has been on a death watch for years and no one, except Fast Eddy, knows when it will die.

Lowe's and, in fact, any authorized Craftsman vendor is SUPPOSED to honor the lifetime warranty. I had a tool box that had an unconditional lifetime warranty. Fortunately, I never removed that label. It got pretty trashed, 100% my fault. I brought it to Lowe's and after some arguing with the head cashier, got it warrantied with an upgrade in size (my size was no longer available) - if you Chicom can be called that, LOL.

These are confirmed by local news but are not on today's official list, probably because they're being treated as one-off closures running on a slightly earlier schedule than the others.

The stuff being shared online on 11/6 also had Commerce, CA in it, but that appears to be a Kmart that already closed years ago, and no Sears in that town.

The only other mistake in the original source was the Kmart in Des Plaines, IL ended up not closing - I'm guessing that's the 1 Kmart they had been considering closing that got removed from the final list at the last minute, corporate has done that kind of thing in previous rounds too.

Update 11/7/19 8am: previously-unnamed PR locations now identified, with article link.

Update 11/7/19 3pm: found new article links for Visalia, CA; West Dundee, IL; Algona, IA; Bishop, CA;
and NEWLY IDed LOCATIONS: Sears in LaVale, MD and Kmart in Warren, MI. (Later update: These two aren't part of the official list after all, but they *are* closing. :dunno: )

Update 11/7/19 5pm: The whole list has officially come out! Locations that had to be added from it are in all-caps so you can easily see they're new additions, too many to list in the update note.

appreciate the heads-up. The two sears within 20 miles and a kmart (it's close but i never shopped there) are all on the list. As bad as sears service these days are, it's sad.

Thanks. My local Sears has been a ghost town - more employees than customers and decreasing inventory over the past 6 months.

Would you provide a citation?

I think it's been compiled from store employees. I shared actual news links for the few that had been covered on local news so far.

Yes, Evolv was started when Taiwan was considered a downgrade from the US-made mainline Craftsman. Now some of the Evolv stuff is China too, but the ones that are still from Taiwan are probably better than the equivalent mainline Craftsman item, lol.

Out of everything that I bought from Sears, the Evolv impact sockets probably the most used and abused among my tools, and they still work great. Only thing I do not like is the size markings are stamped, so can be hard to see in low lighting situation.

Totally agree on warranty. Most of us here are paying very little OOP, or free anyway

Article about Sears and Kmart store closings in Puerto Rico: https://www.theweeklyjournal.com/bu...cle_f6638718-00d3-11ea-9c1c-17a01655f226.html

Transform is not the only retailer that’s shrinking it’s brick and mortar. Over 8,600 US retail stores will close in 2019. https://www.businessinsider.com/stores-closing-in-2019-list-2019-3

That article was written a few weeks ago; more closures have since added to that number. The distribution chains -warehouses, transportation, etc.- behind those closings also are negatively impacted. The way we all buy things is drastically changing.

It looks like Sears.com no longer offers any items from Grip-On and Channellock. Mayhew is down to just one set of pry bars (at a pretty good price) and Knipex is back to just two items.

I long for the days that you could use points to buy Wera stuff.

I suspect that those firms don't want to extend credit to Sears, because they believe/realize that Sears is now insolvent and will default on its debts and/or declare bankruptcy any moment now.

Most of (what remains of) the nicer tool brands are currently-ish provided to Sears through a SAS distributor (not the manufacturer) called some weird name I don't recall, that I saw on the package I received one of them in a few months ago (posted about it at the time). They run in phases of availability depending on how deep in the hole Sears gets with them, like most of the kinda-remaining suppliers tend to.

Thanks.

The handles say "Craftsman;" do you mean they're really Vessel-rebranded Craftsman?

The 2-pc impact driver set is made in Japan by Vessel for Craftsman. It has been discussed here several times in the past couple years. One of the highest-quality products Sears still has.

Yes

I think these are made in Japan (someone correct me if I am wrong). I have one set unopened in the garage among a pile of unopened tools. I can try to find it if needed.

You can add the Sears in Lansing, MI, to that list according to USA today. I wonder how much of this round of closures (and others) is nothing more of a real estate grab since I was just told the Lansing store was a top 50.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/mone...-stores-set-shutter-february-2020/2521653001/

More than that - corporate finally admitted to the full list in a press release late this afternoon! https://searsholdings.com/docs/110719_store_closing_list.pdf

Just this morning, a PR person quoted in one of the local news articles that came out today had refused to answer any questions, even about what the total number of closings would be.

Trimmed slightly from the original expectation of 53 Sears and 46 Kmarts - now the total is 51 Sears and 45 Kmarts. They say they will only have 182 total Sears/Kmart stores remaining once this round is done (not counting Hometowns). I think that is 120ish Sears and 60ish Kmarts.

Update: I finished adding all the new ones to my list post. Rearranged into my store groupings and in alphabetical order by city instead of randomly within each state, so still easier to refer to than the official PDF. I also have a few others that are definitely still closing but not part of the official bulk list.

One of them is in Texas (San Antonio), but I'm still safe for now. California got hit HARD, that state had until now been the densest-remaining concentration of Sears/Kmart stores, but are now losing 19 Sears and 9 Kmarts!

"From WSJ: Following the closures [announced Nov 7, 2019], there will be just 182 Sears or Kmart stores in operation, down from 425 locations as of February [2019]. Just five years ago, the company still had nearly 2,000 locations."

yes, trust this group. BTW, I used the JIS/Phillips from the set on my 15 year old Honda rotor screws. It was one size small and could hardly budge. Ordered #3 online and it really worked. That one screwdriver (Vessel branded) costed about $18.

Yeah, as one of the few guys here from Cali, I've long been watching from the sidelines. I make frequent trips from San Diego through LA/Inland Empire/Palm Desert so I've had nearly a dozen stores to choose from in the past years. Looks like that's sadly coming to an end now.

My local Chula Vista store is on the list, and I don't care what people think, I'm thrilled they are closing. Terrible can't begin to describe the employees or store policies there. Can't wait until those people have to get another retail job at a real company, where as soon as they treat people poorly someone complains and corporate kicks them to the curb. They have denied any craftsman tool warranties beyond PR ratchet rebuilds for years. They deserve to go away.

I was considering buying something to do the $100 back deal but given how few stores are left it hardly seems worth it. I'm down to one in Escondido.

A tip just posted on SD this evening: "Retailmenot is doing a 20% cashback [for Sears.com] today only."

Update: Never mind, apparently it's dead already.

A reminder for everyone losing your nearby stores, as long as you're buying at least $10 worth of stuff at a time, you do still have the option of going through the SYW Personal Shopper app to get free home shipping on most stuff. :)

And in the case of this particular deal, I think the points will all come in fast enough that you could spend them before your store closes. (Points should continue to work during liquidation [on normally-sold items, not fixtures and such], and you also still have 3 weeks before liquidation actually starts.)

Also, you can still use ship-to-store until just a few days before liquidation actually starts.

Well the day has finally come. With the Peoria, IL store on the chopping block, this will close every Sears within 100 miles of me now [emoji26]. This is second store to close within 20 mins of me in 2 years.

Fortunately I just picked up 13 items last week. If anything I used Sears to get stuff shipped to the store without costing any shipping. So sad

Just announced Lansing, Michigan Sears is closing in 2012. Really *****.. I was told at one time store was number one in tool sales for multiple years. I sure will miss this store. I hate Eddie Lampert.

One of the stores slated to close is nearby.

What deals and strategies should I expect and use over the next two months with that store?

I would say the strategies is knowing the price of items that you want to buy.

From what I have seen when my local hometown store was doing their clearance sale last month, they increase the price to full retail price, then slowly lower them down. People who does not know thinks they are getting a great deal, when in fact you can buy the same thing cheaper online.

Last time I went to visit the store, tools were at 30% off and they were almost all gone.

My personal experience suggests extreme caution if using ship to store to a closing store. Things get really hectic at a closing store. Some/many/most (YMMV) of the employees become, shall we say to be polite, less efficient. Bless their lil hearts! Sear’s policies become even more fuzzy and totally ignored more often.

My experience: The last Sears within 100+ miles announced it was closing in early January, 2019 and started the liquidation sale within a couple weeks. The day BEFORE the closing announcement I placed an order for several ship to store tool items. I believe the total order was 8 items, using about 50/50 SYW points & FreeCash and out of pocket payment.

I got the email notice that my order was ready for pickup. Go to the store. About 3 minutes into the 5 minute order delivery timer the screen shows delivery and clock stops with no Sears employee in sight. (That was always the standard practice at this store.) About 10 minutes later an employee comes out with half of my items and says she can’t find the others yet, then goes back to keep looking. 10 more minutes pass. I walk past the Employees Only sign to find out the status and find a manager I recognized, and who recognized me, from prior pickups. The employee who was supposed to be looking for the rest of my order is nowhere to be found.

Manager checks computer and finds that my order has been marked as fully delivered. I guess that’s how they stopped the clock? She writes down a list of the missing items and promises to look for them, explaining their issues with employees leaving, liquidation merchandise deliveries and new temporary help..... I stop by a couple more times over the next month. First time, believe it or not, she had found a couple of the items and pulled another from the floor.

Last item, sale price just under $30, never showed up and nothing comparable was on the floor. Store closes. Try Chat. They insist I have to call Customer Service. Try that, get transferred from person to person. Last person says they have to “file a claim” and says I’ll hear soon.

Fast forward about 6 months to August. I get an email message advising that my claim was denied because the item was delivered. I send a reply message noting that was BS (I might have been less polite) because their employee recorded that to stop the delivery clock. A few weeks later I got an email notice of a refund. The amount was short....but I still considered it a victory!

One of the stores slated to close is nearby.

What deals and strategies should I expect and use over the next two months with that store?

The store will get much busier and prices will be mediocre. The only benefit is that you might find some NOS. When the first store near me closed a couple years ago, they brought in a bunch of Craftsman Industrial tools and I was able to get some good deals on USA made tools. Another store near me is closing now and didn't get any of that, but they were receiving truckloads and I think they got some NOS. The only think I bought was a Gladiator cabinet that had been discontinued years ago. Not sure if it was shipped in or if they found it in the back, and the only reason I likely got it for a decent price was that they couldn't find it in the system. I paid less for similar cabinets when they went on regular clearance.

I don’t know if it’s been posted, get 10% off purchases using the app.

Thanks for sharing again just in case, but we did talk about it a couple days ago, the catch is you can't use any other coupons or freecash with it since the 10% applies as a coupon.

Yikes. I guess the PS (Personal Shopper) is the way to go instead. Only do in-store purchases at a store that's going to start liquidation soon, no ship-to-store even though they still allow it. If you must try ship-to-store, do a single item per pickup attempt so they can't put you as deep in the hole if they screw up like that.

How did you find out about the liquidation sale?

How did they discount prices over time there, especially for tools?

Thanks

Thanks. The 30% off resulting in all tools being gone was the sort of pearl I was looking for.

np, but just to be clear 30% off is not a good deal when you can find the same tools cheaper online. Maybe it is a good deal for certain tools, but for the ones I was looking for, they are way too expensive.

For example, I remember I was looking at the evolv impact set. I thought I may want to keep a set in the car if I can get one cheap enough. $23 online, but pretty sure it was 30% from original price $50.
