I found this old CM DP at a barn sale. It came with this oddball fence and a box full of shaper bits/chucks/etc. The box color matches what's left of the DP color so maybe it was a shaper accessory kit but I'm not sure.

It's dirty but 100% complete with no damage or missing parts. The motor runs good and the CM badges look perfect.

I have no need for another DP but the price was right ($5).

Here's the badge on a 1941 model I just picked up. Same size and color, although yours says power tools under Craftsman and mine doesn't.

You got a better deal on yours than I did.

That's an Atlas built Craftsman DP probably 1930's, and that's a USUCK score!

I think the fence/guard is from a different machine, probably a shaper.

The box was probably painted and looks to be a 50's/60's lunch box.

That may be the router accessory kit for that drill press. The old books say the head could be installed upside down on the pole under the table to be used as a router/shaper.

Still haven't forgot you, I have been crazy busy but your package will go out asap. ;)

Searched out this Delta/Rockwell 15-017 Utility Press several years ago on CL. Got for $120. Took awhile to get it back in running condition. Also snagged a tilting table off of ebay. Just finished it up last week with a new (old stock) Jacobs heavy duty 1/2" chuck bought from Michigan Surplus. The new chuck solved the run out, now the needle barely moved. Sweet. Just have to move my oil tank, blah.

And the best discovery. Dude, really?:

Second best discovery was the old sleeve valve electric motor that was mounted on it intended for horizontal only applications.

Bradical,
Those a very good presses. We have some at work that have been used 20 hrs/day for the last 40ish years.

Wow! Good to hear and thanks. I should hope so 'cause the thing is built like a tank and weighs about as much. I expected to have to replace the quill bearings too, considering this DP was used commercially for years before an employee was allowed to take it home. But to my surprise I could detect no movement nor noise in the quill and its run out was spot on. Pretty impressive.

Well, it's not my DP but there's a vintage Craftsman 'Mohawk' available on CL not far from here. Asking price is $150, which seems pretty steep to me. :dunno:
Still, it's a handsome machine and even has an intact, original 'Craftsman Ball Bearings" decal on one side. :)

Like that beehive Homecraft. I have Penncraft-branded just like it and it is solid performer.

It's one of my favorites. Before I got the Craftsman floor model, it was my go to DP.

That Penncraft is nice. Is it black or dark grey?

So was hoping someone could help out. How do you remove the front pulley bearings from a Walker Turner 900? A search has turned up empty. Thanks for any help you all may give

Me, I'd pay maybe $100 especially since it has the original cover that looks to be in great shape. If it's missing the quill spring I'd pay less even though you can put an altlas spring in it. The switch in front seems funky. And I'd replace it and patch the holes in the casting.

Picked up this Light heavy weight (close to 300 lbs) Canedy-otto morse taper drill press today, looks to be original paint, zero runout, whisper quiet later craftsman 1/2 hp motor. Need to look at a better drive pulley to match the quill pulley...Can`t find any model or serial numbers but looks as if a plate had been removed from the side at some point, appears to be made between 1940 and 1945 going by the ones I`ve seen on vintage machinery, some light surface rust on the base, Jacob`s super chuck 1/8 to 3/4...I`m a happy camper now... :3gears: Wrong on the serial number J 3251 USS with a boat anchor under the USS stamp...

My new to me delta/rockwell 17-600 floor model. Switched the motor to a single phase 1160rpm 1/2hp, and degreased and pressure washed it. Runs super smooth. Does any one know how to date these drill presses?
I have $163 into this unit.

I couldn't help but pick up this old CM drill press from a barn sale a couple weeks ago for a whopping $5. It was complete and had minimal signs of use but was very dirty with some surface rust. It came with a bunch of shaper bits and attachments.

I have no real need for it but decided to restore it anyway.

Here she is as found:

P1090147.jpg

I completely disassembled the machine and removed the rust by sanding/wire brushing. Evaporust was only needed on the chuck.

The old bearings were removed and ultrasonically cleaned and repacked with synthetic grease. The closet paint match was Rustoleum Royal Blue.

Here's the machine after restoration:

P1090149.jpg

I went ahead and restored the motor that came with it. However the motor was 3450 RPM. (DP was obviously used as a router/shaper). I don't recall ever seeing a CM motor this neat. It's a Repulsion Induction style. I believe these were close to the original colors. (bearings also removed/cleaned/repacked)

P1090162.jpg

P1090161.jpg

I later concluded that 3450 RPM is just too fast for a DP so decided to rebuild a later model CM 1750 motor. I would have loved to see that older matching motor on the DP.

Here's the end result so far. I need to order a larger drive belt since the motor I used sits further back on the mount.

P1090172.jpg

P1090173.jpg

I'd like to find a few parts for this DP. I need a return spring cap/cover. One of the notches is broken on mine and it only holds on one pin. If anyone has one please let me know.

I'd also like to locate the spindle guard and maybe even the multi speed attachment.

P1090149knob.jpg

This old CM will join it's bigger brother and little sister:

Dave, you have really done a nice job on the refinishing. I think you are probably right on the use as a shaper/router. Got to be honest though I never saw one that color, but never worried too much anyway. It really looks great.

I'm planning on turning this pile of "bones" into a DP. (Rockwell Delta V.S. 17-600)

Other then a few generic fasteners, it's complete and in great shape except for one proprietary part that's now unobtanium.

Anyone know where I could find a 1" I.D. 28 TPI Jam Nut?

This one? Shaft needs bearings, sell it with the nut for $20. and actual shipping cost.

Thanks to member 454ragtop for providing me the oddball jam nut, I was able to complete this DP project.

It's a mid 1970's Delta Rockwell variable speed #17-600 w/1 HP motor and large production table in almost perfect shape. It just needed some bearing service, cleaning, fresh paint and assembly.

I might VFD it later.

Reverse!! I put a VFD on mine to run in reverse. broken bolt extractions with a left handed drill bit is the primary reason. and because I wanted to try my hand converting a DP with a VFD.

WHY? What would you gain by putting a VFD on it when it's already variable speed?

It's currently variable from 350 to 4250 RPM. I could add a VFD and overclock the motor by approx. 30% and get to over 5000 RPM. Or turn the speed wheel down to 350 and then dial down the VFD to around 10 Hz. That would get me <100 RPM.

It's also quicker and easier to turn a little potentiometer then to turn the speed wheel.

And you can also get reverse with a VFD.

It might not be worth the expense/hassle though.

Dave the drill press looks awesome, nice job. The one I parted out (it was missing a bunch of parts) had a Rockwell 2 button switch to control a mag starter on the front of the head. Don't have it any more though, sold it thru OWWM a while back.
