C series box. Very nice
Yet in the 34 Big Book, the C-series set is sold in a funky looking box with a cantilever tray in it.I wish I could figure out how to make these screen captures larger.

Very uncommon set. Welcome to garage journal! I have had one of those in my hands and the box didn’t feel as sturdy as it should have been for a 1/2 set so I think a lot of them didn’t survive.I found this set recently. The box is rough but it appears everything is there except the midget set.

Thanks for the guess. The tag says 4383 in the middle so I wonder if that is the item number? Also I guessed early heritage eta based on the paint color.Interesting gray box Smokes. My first thought was some sort of machinist set....depth gauges, reamers or something like that. The 39 catalog shows a bushing remover set that sells for 9.98 but it appears to have a divider spot welded inside it. The 45 big book shows this inside mic set. The "plush lined case" makes me think it had some sort of removable insert to hold the individual pieces. 45 of course is into the Heritage era but it wouldn't surprise me to see something with Heritage era paint and a left over Long C decal. Whatever it is...nice find!![]()
Scott, where did you happen to find the catalog pages with the year added in in red? Or did you do that yourself? It would be so much easier when looking at thumbnails ,comparing models, production dates with those bold red dates. Thanks!!
Fantastic research! I haven’t been able to get some research time in so I really appreciate it. I didn’t know they put item numbers on the tags. I find it interesting that the price of $9.75 matches as well. Thanks for finding that! Now I have to find the sockets and L handle to put in it.Found it. 1/2"sq spark plug socket set, 9 4383. 1942 matches price 9.75, 48 is listed (11.75), 49 has the first picture (but 11.75). 1939 lists a 5pc set, so pre-war/early wartime would be the best guess. I found a listing for spark plug sockets in 45 Fall/Winter, but no listing of a set between 42-48 catalogs.
Pg 14, 1942 Hand Tool Catalog.
"12pc set includes 11 spark plugs sockets (sizes 1/2" - 1 1/8", 25/32" not included) and Ell handle 9 PC 4402 (Page 16). In handy metal box."
Just above it, it lists all the spark plug options (12 total), so eliminating the 25/32 means the 11 sockets are counted by 1/16" increments.

Yes on the 9/32 and yes on the box being original. Nice find on those. You are missing a t handle and an extension from the set. Those are snap on made. Early 30’s
Thanks Smoke! I'm short a socket or two as well, by the time I add all the missing pieces I probably should have just bought that nice set that's on the big auction site at the moment...like I said I got a bit carried awayYes on the 9/32 and yes on the box being original. Oh absolutely! All day long.
Sweet pickup, OTG. Made by Union. Same box I have. But I put a Heritage logo on mine. Yours is just a year or two older. They only made them with the formed sheet metal pulls for a few years in the mid to late 40s.Picked up an old machinist box
I have this old Craftsman bit. Sadly, no mates. 1/2" I believe. Here is todays long C find, a 12 inch Craftsman bit brace in really nice condition. It is marked "Craftsman 12 - Made in USA BB". I am very picky about bit braces, limiting my purchases to Yankee, scarce models or sizes, and those in exceptional condition. This one checked 2 boxes: the uncommon 12 inch sweep and near mint condition with a long C decal. The BB code indicates Millers Falls manufacture and I am guessing 1940's vintage.
