Yet in the 34 Big Book, the C-series set is sold in a funky looking box with a cantilever tray in it.I wish I could figure out how to make these screen captures larger.

Welcome to Garage Journal Phil. About time you made your way over here!

You and I have been talking about the minor differences in the construction of your cantilever box over mine. Looking closely at the catalog images, it appears that in 33 the midget set was held in a compartment(s) integral to the tray. In 34 the midget set was in it's own clamshell. I would guess that the differences in the cantilever boxes has to do with how the midget set was secured.

Is this logo just prior to long C? It’s on a socket box finished with burgundy japanning intead of crinkle blue paint. Maybe for C-series sockets?

That’s factory original paint so don’t touch it😂😳. But yes c series or “vanadium “ era stuff. The brown isn’t the most attractive but I’ve seen worse

I found this set recently. The box is rough but it appears everything is there except the midget set.
Very uncommon set. Welcome to garage journal! I have had one of those in my hands and the box didn’t feel as sturdy as it should have been for a 1/2 set so I think a lot of them didn’t survive.

Picked up this long c stickered box today. It’s gray colored and still has the price tag inside so I wasn’t leaving it behind for $5. I looked pretty closely to see if someone had taken out some dividers but no signs of that. What did this box fit? Also got a long c combo wrench and various sockets.

Interesting gray box Smokes. My first thought was some sort of machinist set....depth gauges, reamers or something like that. The 39 catalog shows a bushing remover set that sells for 9.98 but it appears to have a divider spot welded inside it. The 45 big book shows this inside mic set. The "plush lined case" makes me think it had some sort of removable insert to hold the individual pieces. 45 of course is into the Heritage era but it wouldn't surprise me to see something with Heritage era paint and a left over Long C decal. Whatever it is...nice find!Screen Shot 2022-07-31 at 5.52.00 AM.png

Thanks for the guess. The tag says 4383 in the middle so I wonder if that is the item number? Also I guessed early heritage eta based on the paint color.

Scott, where did you happen to find the catalog pages with the year added in in red? Or did you do that yourself? It would be so much easier when looking at thumbnails ,comparing models, production dates with those bold red dates. Thanks!!

I've gotten in the habit that whenever I screen shot a catalog image, I add the date to it. I've spent way too much time going back and trying to figure out what exact year an image I've captured comes from

A good practice I wish more would follow. I know I've been sneered at for being too much of a stickler about posting protocol, such as including details in the text, rather than just posting photos, but it makes this site so much more useable with the search function. Photo filenames are not searchable. And neither are markups inside photos.

Found it. 1/2"sq spark plug socket set, 9 4383. 1942 matches price 9.75, 48 is listed (11.75), 49 has the first picture (but 11.75). 1939 lists a 5pc set, so pre-war/early wartime would be the best guess. I found a listing for spark plug sockets in 45 Fall/Winter, but no listing of a set between 42-48 catalogs.

Pg 14, 1942 Hand Tool Catalog.
"12pc set includes 11 spark plugs sockets (sizes 1/2" - 1 1/8", 25/32" not included) and Ell handle 9 PC 4402 (Page 16). In handy metal box."
Just above it, it lists all the spark plug options (12 total), so eliminating the 25/32 means the 11 sockets are counted by 1/16" increments.

Fantastic research! I haven’t been able to get some research time in so I really appreciate it. I didn’t know they put item numbers on the tags. I find it interesting that the price of $9.75 matches as well. Thanks for finding that! Now I have to find the sockets and L handle to put in it.

I can't believe that I didn't know about this thread until a couple of days ago. :lol_hitti

Figure I'd play a bit of "drag and brag" myself and show off my modest Long C collection. Most of it is Vanadium marked, and somehow my 3/8" DBE wrench missed getting in the shot. Also, the Vice Grips are actual 1942 model Vice Grips and not Craftsman, but I threw them in there anyway.

Got carried away at an online auction the other day and paid through the nose for these small C series sockets. I'm assuming 9/32, didn't measure yet. Anyone know if the box is original?

Yes on the 9/32 and yes on the box being original. Nice find on those. You are missing a t handle and an extension from the set. Those are snap on made. Early 30’s

Thanks Smoke! I'm short a socket or two as well, by the time I add all the missing pieces I probably should have just bought that nice set that's on the big auction site at the moment...like I said I got a bit carried away :ROFLMAO:

There was a time I would see a half dozen of these Short C Vanadiums a year at the flea, but this is the first one this year. The knurling on the handles is exceptional deep, as is the Circle-C code mark, but one tip is a tad mangled, unfortunately.

Here is todays long C find, a 12 inch Craftsman bit brace in really nice condition. It is marked "Craftsman 12 - Made in USA BB". I am very picky about bit braces, limiting my purchases to Yankee, scarce models or sizes, and those in exceptional condition. This one checked 2 boxes: the uncommon 12 inch sweep and near mint condition with a long C decal. The BB code indicates Millers Falls manufacture and I am guessing 1940's vintage.
I have this old Craftsman bit. Sadly, no mates. 1/2" I believe.
