If you google search, the biggest culprit seems to be Adguard.

My wife has a 2015 MacBook Pro. I will give it a shot tonight.

Not sure if this is an issue... Links, specifically towards Amazon items... are timing out at a HIGHER rate than before this new universe we are in. Totally inconsistent errors are presented. It' seams also to be associated with the AGE of the link... I tested links right away and had no issues. Then try the same link 24+ hours later and I get the timeout over and over with different errors each time. I didn't see anybody else say anything about this.

I could just be special... my mother had me tested...

Seems my text input freezes up on occasion when replying to a post. I can type, and it still registers what I wrote, but I cannot see it to follow along.

Haven't had the issue before, and no changes to the phone in the past week. Only way to fix it is to post and then edit.

Motorola running chrome mobile.

EDIT: just did it on this post from "what I wrote" on.

Can you add page control to the top of the page on mobile view instead of just the bottom? Kind of a pain sometimes to have to scroll to the bottom to change.

I don't know if this has already been asked, but is it possible to have the search function recognize quoted strings?

Example 1: I want to search for posts about combination squares. If I enter combination square into the search box, it searches for the words independently, and I might get results for combination wrenches and square drive ratchets. It would be nice to be able to put it in quotes - "combination square" - and get results for that specific phrase.

Example 2: I want to search for posts about try squares. If I enter try square into the search box, it will search for "square" and tell me "try" is too short a word and is being ignored. In that situation I should be able to put "try square" (with quotes) into the search box and get results for that specific phrase, including the "try" part.

Can it happen? Thanks man.

on the subject of time limits for editing posts...

i understand there are various ways that users abuse this feature.. especially going postal and edit-defacing all of their posts on the way out the door.

but being able to edit posts on forums without a time limit is huge for some people, myself included. i edit old posts for various reasons to correct outdated information, fix broken links, etc. this can be days or even years later. i personally feel that the benefits conferred to responsible users (and readers of their edited posts) majorly outweigh the problems.

i've faced this issue myself on communities i run, and i just decided allow infinite editing to not let a few bad apples spoil things for everyone else. if they want to deface their content on the way out, good riddance. if they find another way to abuse editing, then they're banned. the only place i don't allow unlimited editing is in sale/swap areas in order to maintain clear records of transactions.

in my opinion, the best solutions are flexible, technological ones that don't take away from the experience of responsible users.

that paid xenforo extension to set custom edit limits for posts is an interesting solution, but there are issues with it. it increases contribution friction as the user has to request it for each post and then presumably wait for a staff response. i know for a fact that i would be far less inclined to bother making an improvement to a post if i had to bother with that and then follow up on it later. another downside is it increases staff workload.

a more elegant solution would be to rate-limit post editing. say allow a handful of edits per hour and also generate a notification to moderators when users saturate their limit for a defined period of time. this would allow the team to either adjust the limit (potentially increase it) or ban a user who is trying to deface all their stuff. it's something that i've considered but never implemented.

what i have done, however, is written a relatively simple thing to restore a user's defaced posts. essentially you pick a backup (either a daily incremental or arbitrary point-in-time recovery) and enter a user id, and it restores all that user's posts from it. i have done this a few times out of spite when some users have done this.

edit: lots of posts i had to catch up on in this thread. i didn't finish yet, but i see you got a rate limit for editing. nice.
also, i think your choice of 15 edits per hour is probably pretty reasonable and generous. i've edited this post many times and didn't hit the limit.

Thanks again for all your work Ryan. I tried using Chrome on the same machine, and I still get the lag. It's not the worst thing in the world, just enough to be noticeable. I also checked and verified I do not have Adguard or any other extensions installed in Safari...

That suggests graphics acceleration issue. I’ll research. My wife’s machine is smooth as can be.

OK... Hot Rod search engine is now online and working... as part of that, you can now use quotes for a phrase search.

Example, if you are looking for information on a SK wrench you can type this into the search box:

"SK wrench"

Quotes and all... and it will return all posts with that phrase.

I also tried combining keywords and phases like Asylum "jib crane" and it worked well for that too. I might actually use the search function here now vs Google site search!

Well done!!

Frankly, site search through google will always be better... cuz well, resources... but for quick jobs this ain't bad at all... It's the best forum search engine on the market - that much is certain.

Didn't read all the posts... Ryan, I appreciate your artwork, but I would rather see the old 'favorite icon' with the white star make a comeback. It still shows up when viewing attached images though, If I have a bunch of tabs open, GJ is hard to find (personal preference kind of a thing)

With each day of use, this new format gets better and better. Not sure why the hate early on...even the first day was magnitudes better than the old format....especially on my phone. And I'm still at a loss as to why the hate for the font.

With that said....2 things I've done to make it more 'comfortable'.

I reduced the scaling on my web page to 80%. My laptop and desktop have stupid high resolution. 80% Is very comfortable. I would imagine on a lower res monitor, you would need a lower %, more like 60%. I have one laptop with 1400x900 res I can try it on. I'm pretty sure what I'll see.

Second, I made a shortcut to "Watched". It's the quickest way for me to see what I want to see. I almost never go to the FP section now...I'm more interested in what is being talked about and new posts....along with tools and fab....and some of those good deals on tools.

Side note....a downside to buying a new 'larger' tool box....you have the urge to fill it up.

Last thing....I don't use Chrome....or the Google search engine. One reason, If I use either one, if I'm doing searches for ideas for say a BD gift for her (or my squeeze), she gets side bar advertisements showing what I looked at.
I use DuckDuckGo....and get less targeted advertising. As of now, I don't have AdBlock installed on my new laptop....and so far the pop ups are not too bad

John, if you didn't catch the initial font in the opening hours, you missed it. It was hard to read, Ryan was on it and figured out the problem and fixed it.

if logged in, you should only have two ads in the forum - same as before. Can you send me a screenshot?
Ryan, my mistake. I apparently was not logged in when getting those ads. Thanks for your hard work here. The new format is dandy. CJDave.

I thought I was pretty quick to log in when it was back up....but I guess not quick enough

Was it really that bad? Or, was it a ploy by Ryan to weed out the AH's?

thats what I needEd… that’s your user profile page within Wordpress. I should fix that.

I'm still getting the WordPress control bar across the top:

Seems to be on all pages not in or associated with the forum:
  • Home
    • Deals
    • Featured Spaces
    • News & Editorial
    • Projects
    • Reviews & Features
  • The Alliance
  • The Store

Yes sir. I sent that one up the ladder as it's a little out of my league. I should hear back soon.

REQUEST:

In the old forum when you were viewing the Garage Gallery listing for instance, you could click on the Replies number for a given thread to see who all posted in a thread. A new window would open listing everyone that replied in that thread... like this:

(This was my ASYLUM thread listing from a while back as an example)

4083-thread-posters-jpg.1055732

When clicking on the underlined number following each members name, it would display every message in the thread that they had made. This was handy because I typically can remember who gave a tip or something that I wanted to refer back to, but this kept me from having to scroll through the entire thread looking for it.
It basically acted like a reply filter just to see that members replies in a given thread.

Is there a way to do this in this new forum format? If not, can it be added?

RYAN: i'm not sure if you are still reading all the posts that are coming in, but if you are i have a couple suggestions. one is thank you for taking all the time you have to move to this new format and even though the old one was working ok i've found that I like the look and a few of the new things a lot.

I've never used TAPATALK cause I mainly post from my laptop and use my cell to read a quick post or two while i'm out and about. that said if the new poster's name could be under the thread's name instead of the original poster I'd (We'd) be able to see if we might want to respond quickly or not. if you are waiting to hear from someone about an issue and you see that they posted then you can get right after the post and see your answer as opposed to reading all the other posts that might not be as important. not sure you can do this, but I don't like reading my cell phone in landscape form to read new poster's name.

one thing that seems to be a **** shoot is when I click on a thread i've been watching it sometimes goes to the last posts since my last viewing and other times it goes to the original post on the thread which might be 5 years ago. anyway to set it so we can go right to the last post like we had that option before?

another thing I liked about the old GJ was that I could set my views per page to 100 and not sure what they are now, but this wouldn't be as big of a deal if I could get to the latest posts on a thread when I click on it.

picture loading seems to be much easier and I can see using the like button for a quick post to let the posters know at least somebody out there is reading what they took the time to post.

thanks again!!!

@Ryan Hi, I had posted last week that the compressed font was uncomfortable to read, but you must have either changed the font or found a different variation, because the main font for messages/posts is much improved now. Great work!

I still find the font quite large on my 13" retina MBP, but browser scaled to 90% works for extended time on the forum. Am I right in thinking that the larger font size is a compromise to accomodate mobile? Overall, you've done a really great job with the visual aspect of the new design, thanks for making that a priority.

It dawned on me the Search function has quite a bit of capability, and I found a way to do this if you have the name of the member in mind and don't need a list to remind you of everyone that replied in your thread to pick from:

Select these items:
Thread-Specific-Seasrch-On-Member-01.JPG

Hitting "Search" gives you all replies posted by member TwoBytes in my thread:
