What do your Storage Cabinets look like?

Office cabinets in the garage

As with the others who posted here earlier, I used office cabinets in the garage.

I use a compactor system for spare parts; it offers a lot of storage but has a relatively small footprint.

I put not only equipmemt manuals and other files in the filing cabinets, but also technical DVDs, miscellaneous spares, even bongos and ,usical isntruments (every garage must have a garage band).

I posted these some time ago in the gallery section (modern garage ...), so apologize if you've seen them before. I thought it would be good to contribute them to this consolidated thread.

Just plastic door tracks glued to the rack beams then cut the hardboard to size. I still need to cover the sides and drill some finger holes in the doors. The hardest part is finding a glue that will stick to the plastic track and the metal beam.

Here's the website for the track, I had to special order the gray and the longer length. The 8 footers are to short for an 8 foot beam, needs around 8' 6" or so.

I was going to say a "**** load" but I'm trying to clean it up a little.

That is the good thing about using office equipment. They are inexpensive relative to the tool cabinets we tend to use. They also frequently come up in clearance sales and as used furniture when a business closes.

Not sure about the ICBM launch facility, but the archives would have compactor shelves - they roll on rails and save space by eliminating an aisle or two. But many offices have them, where floor space is at a premium. We have them where I work, but in much larger sizes. I have limited space in the workshop, so the compactor is great for me. They can carry a lot of weight; I have cylinder heads and a gearbox in mine.

These are the cabinets I framed in with 2x4s. The trim all pallet wood and reclaimed roofing tin. The garage door track is built into the top shelf.

I turned some unsused space above the projection screen to house not normally used MX gear.

Got these cabinets out of a Dry Cleaning store on Craigslist.

Crappy pic but you get the gist of it. This is my upper cabinet. It still needs a little touch up, some lettering and a few coats of clear. The lower cabinets have a paint job that is yet to be determined. And yes, there is a wee bit o' Irish in me.

All the lockers came from multiple sources including a mental institution in Kansas. Several different sizes and configurations. All painted to match with base/clear automotive paint which cost way more than I actually have in buying the lockers themselves. Several came out of remodels, etc. The base cabinets came out of a grocery store pharmacy remodel and painted to match.

I have a combination of cabinets, some used office cabinets I picked up cheap for garage storage and some auto parts tune-up cabinets for wall storage. The black cabinets store most of my power tools on roll-out drawers for easy access.

Still a work in progress, but getting there.

What kind of hinges are on these that you're able to have the cabinets mounted so close together without them running into one another when you open them? I was afraid of using these hinges in the past.. because of how you have to mount them.
But then I went to HD, and found the special drill bit, and template kit. It makes counter
sinking them and mounting a snap!

Not really garage storage, but kitchen storage... I built all of my own kitchen cabinets
and counter tops in my old house. I flush mounted everything, and it was very, very
time consuming. I think when I do it again for the garage, I definitely won't go this route.
The doors have to be perfect to fit the holes, and cutting in the hinges was horrible!!

Thanks for the reply Richter. Aren't the ones you have inset overlay? I was planning on using the frameless full overlay ones with the cup (European style?). I'm not sure if they mount the same as your though. I was planning on just using a couple different sized paddle bits to bore out the hole, and then just use some wood filler to patch the hole on the front side (from the tip of the paddle bit). However, I'm definitely open to suggestions if there are other bits to make life easier.

Also, the hinges that I got came with little plastic anchors already installed on the part that attaches to the door. It seems as though you just bore a hole for them to sink into, and then twist the screw to expand the anchor and tighten it. I'm sure this would be fine for kitchen cabinets or light doors, but would this suffice for cabinet doors measuring 75" x 18" and made out of 3/4 ply? Or would I be better off just using some small wood screws?

The new house we're buying has a slightly larger garage, with a 5'x5' recessed work area as well. The previous owner had it packed full of stuff...

He's taking his workbenches, and I'm taking out the shelving. Starting with a blank canvas. I'd love to have Stanley Vidmar cabinets, like what I have at work, but well beyond my budget.

I might epoxy coat the floor, and build my own workbenches and cabinets. Getting some good ideas on this forum!

True, the European style hinges would not work with how I built my cabinet
doors. I did use some of the European hinges on a hidden wall door that I built
once. It was out of 3/4 tongue and groove 1x4's, with 1/2 plywood on the
back. The door was soo heavy, that I had to use 5 of the European style
hinges on it, to make it hold the weight.

Had not heard of that brand. Just gave their website a look. Looks very much like the Vidmar equipment! Might be somewhat cheaper, but still more than I can afford (buying a new house, just took a loss on the one I sold).

I build a lot of electronics. Lots of little parts, so small parts drawers are very handy. One such cabinet on the Edsal website, over $2K.

Here's a peek at one of the many I helped install at work:

Wonderful cabinets. We had a 53' trailer, 3 cabinets wide, all delivered to our shop. Over $30K worth. Quality stuff. The tough part is using equipment of this level, then looking to buy something for home.

I'm sure I'll end up building my own wooden cabinets and drawers. Someday when I hit the lottery, I'll have it all. Until then, I'll just get to drool over some of the pics you guys are posting!
