Hey all, I'm Jared Smith - Long time lurker, first time poster, I'm a web developer, photographer, and machinist and fabricator, and lover of old XLCH's, and air cooled ducati's. I live in Vallejo, CA with my wife and two kids. I've built quite a few bikes over the years, and showed my ducati single cylinder 250 flattracker a couple years ago at the 1 moto show in portland. That bike now lives at the Alta Motors showroom. I'm on instagram as @bluejackstudio

Here's my garage that I recently finished build out on.

Bikes in the garage:

1960 xlch chopper (rebuilding the stainless sissy bar and fender mounts on this one right now)

1966 4-5/8" stroker xlch (currently finishing this build)

1959 xlch pretty much stock

1957 xlch (chopped transmission, dual magneto, dual dellorto carb, dual plug heads - will be building this one next)

1995 ducati 900ss/sp (lightened flywheels, 11.5:1 compression ratio, FCR carbs, fast by feracci exhaust)

Machines / tools:

Everlast powertig 210

1940s Delta / Rockwell 14x36 lathe

1930s Sheldon Model 0 mill with 4" hardinge vise and vertical milling head attachment

Palmgren 8" rotary table

1950s Craftsman / Atlas drill press

1940s Jefferson power hack saw

Handy lift

Wilton baby bullet vise

5 gallon makita air compressor (this needs upgrading soon)

jd2 model 3 tubing bender

Baldor 2" belt sander

etc etc etc. that's the major stuff

And here's some photos:

That’s a nice looking garage and I love the 900 SS with the FBF exhaust.

Sweet! Welcome! And congrats on getting a bike into the 1moto show!

EDIT: Your first pic needs to go in the Garages at Night thread too.

Nice Ducati tracker - I'd seen pictures elsewhere and thought it might be a Sonicweld frame - great to hear you fabbed it yourself!
Quite partial to the early CHs too - more pics please!

Welcome also from a fellow M/C enthusiast.

I think many people like motorcycles as a hobby as you can do a lot with a smaller space as your shop shows.

Really nice work on those vintage bikes!

If you haven't been to Barber for the Vintage festival you owe it to yourself to make a trip. It would be worth the flight/time off from work for sure.

Hey thanks all! Here are some more shots of my bikes, and also a custom lamp (one of a series) I just finished up for a retail / tattoo shop I'm doing design and fabrication for in San Francisco.

this is the ducati as I found it before I tore it all down and fabricated a new frame and rebuilt the whole thing. This old frame now hangs on my shop wall.

a '78 sr500 I built last year. hand built exhaust, seat, kicker, kicker pedal, brake pedal and heim linkages, footpegs, handlebars, fork brace... tons of manual machining on this one. it was a good excuse to spend hours in the shop ;-)

and my 1960 xlch chopper - currently rebuilding a lot of the stainless parts on this one. I had owned a welder for approx. 10 minutes before i dove head first into making this thing, so needless to say, a few years later and I'm ready to make it better.

...

Really neat...love the tracker, and the rest as well. Right up my alley. We share the same profession and love for two wheels...though I am currently a bikeless wonder...just not for long!

Not a garage but I attended the 2017 North American Vincent Rally outside of Minneapolis MN. I did not count them but I was told there were over 80 Vincents.

Jared, I covet the right side of your garage, very nice.

Tell us about your lighting choice, was it based on availability? .."they were there so I took them"? ..or just because you like the way they look compared to tube lighting? Is that an open ceiling and the lights are attached to uncovered rafters?
Thanks for sharing.

Hey!

Yeah, I just happen to prefer this style of warehouse light over tube lights, and I found a good deal on them. It's an open ceiling, and the lights are hung from the rafters, so I just used 12-3 romex neatly stapled to the top of the rafters, all the lights are on a 20amp breaker which is more than enough for all the LED bulbs I have in there, and it all passed inspection with no problem.

A few months of use now, and if anything, all these lights are sometimes too bright, I may split the circuit at some point so I can turn half on at a time.
Anyways... thanks for the questions and glad everyone digs my shop!

Man, I miss my SR500 and my TT500 - both '78s. Great bikes. Love the big thumpers.

This was the old 'winter' motorcycle garage. It was very much an 'ask for forgiveness' scenario rather than ask for permission.

large.jpg

The new space is decidedly more appropriate for 'garaging' but also considerably less comfortable.

I have a garage, but it's cluttered although I can park my car inside of it. I'm using this trailer as my motorcycle "garage" so it can have its own space. It's a work in progress.

Recently moved to our new (old) house over the winter and have been setting up the one car garage and spare room office.

Because I've been dealing with the painting, repairs and new appliance installation, etc, with the whole house itself, its been slow going getting the garage together. I'm not interested in making it a show place, rather just a comfortable work in shop.

No doubt I'll be moving things around and making changes as I go along. Its a long road ahead and I'm in no real hurry to complete it.

Here's a couple pics and you can see more with what I'm starting with and all the things yet to do here:

It’s nothing innovative or special (except the aircon maybe) but it’s clean and functional, stores the toys and is a nice place to work. Most of the helmet collection is crashed lids from racing (losing that Haga replica broke my heart as well as my shoulder). I keep the current gear in the cupboard/locker on the right. I have a nice storeroom attached that gives me enough understair storage to keep the occasional use stuff, a couple of SUPs, and keeps the clutter down. The board racks keep it tidy and things off the floor (Norske PVC tiles). Currently in negotiations with Wife on another bike. Husqvarna 701 Supermoto is what I have in mind.

This is my 11x12 "mini shop" it's a lean too added to the original 7x12 shed in my yard. It was build out of all used wood and used metal roofing. wired up with 110v and 220v.
Def nothing fancy but it serves my purpose. 20191003_182341.jpg20190925_184915.jpg

Looks-like you like Honda SOHC 500/550's, but the struts make my precious (to me) internals, very-uncomfortable.

Here are a few shots of my 'quart in a pint container' 2-car attached garage. It has a loft above the back-half of the garage, capable of holding multiple motorcycles, and designed for it. The red electric 1 ton jib hoist makes it easy to get 'em up/down.

In one shot, I've pictured a new Husky storage top-box in black which replaced an elderly Craftsman toolbox which served well for years, and which was sold for > I paid for it. The deal on the Husky was one mentioned on GJ, and I rushed-out to take advantage of it at Home Depot.

The shop is my base for work, so I've included some pics of motorcycle work, and the results of that work. The purple VMax is now in South America, not to-worry, there are other bikes, I like the VMax. Side-shot of the purple VMax taken in-front of the garage.

My little buddy is always prepared to eliminate any vermin, thankfully, he seems to have scared them away.

A recent shop addition was a 80 gallon Saylor-Beall 5 HP air compressor, which makes using the blast cabinet more-productive.

Cool shop driftpin. When we move in four years I'm going to build a detached garage for my motorcycle hobby. I have no idea how big it will be since that will be determined by the new town's zoning and restrictions. My goal is to make it as large as my budget will allow. :)

Here's my little collection. The CL200 is mine and the little red Honda (a CL75 iirc) was my roommates, sadly he got t-boned while riding it and it's pretty mangled. He broke a ankle but was fine otherwise.

Here's my previous garage, next to my roommate Alex's VFR. The three wheeler was mine and I fixed it up and had fun for a little while.

Here's a shot of the outside of that garage, when a pair of old Honda scooters randomly showed up to get fixed. The yellow scooter was also my roommate Nate's, and he also has the Kawasaki GPZ550 in the background.

Yeah there was about 5 dudes living in the house at he time and most of us had at least one bike. We've all moved out over the years but to my knowledge there should be a Honda CB550 and a CB125 still in that garage.

Wow, many of you have phenomenal setups. How are any of you storing your gear? Specifically leathers for the street and ADV gear for sometimes not the street. I'm 6'6" so I need a lot of room for a 1 piece to hang from. I do appreciate the feedback. BTW, I did search the forums with no luck. Thanks again.
