We have a good Tap & Die thread on the vintage board. Several Craftsman sets have been posted there. I posted photos of the 5498 version of your set there (you can find it it in the Index in the Sticky, page 4, post #71), after first posting it in the 2018 version of this thread. And if you want to see the /G\T/D\ version of your set, NastyNate found one back in 2018, linked here.

So, Picker-of-the-Year plus Pick-of-the-Year...
:scared: NOooo!!!!l

OK, so it's Pick-er only. Thanks for the clarification!
You missed the Insane Clown Posse Garage Sale Thread Host year by two years.

Master Lugz, any idea where the lamps in this post came from?

Hi Merc. Not without additional markings, no, sorry. They may not be military, though. That is an 11-digit Federal Stock Number, so I can tell you they were made between 1953 and the early 70's. The type and model numbers are Federal Standard Stock Catalog references. The FSSC was like an early version of the GSA or DLA catalog. In the 1930's and 1940's, it was run out of a bureau of the Treasury Dept. All federal agencies would buy from it, at standardized prices. So those could have been in any federal office building in the 50's or 60's.

This is tangential, but one trick for looking up older FSN's is to use the 13-digit National Stock Number format. The extra two digits were reserved for Country of Origin (COO) but were rarely used until the 90's or later. You FSN 6230-706-0575 became NSN 6230-00-706-0575. And if you Google that, it returns several hits, including this page, for obsolete "Electrical Portable and Hand Lighting Equipment" from an aerospace industry ISO Group supply chain website.

What is the clamping capacity? Those would make some nifty vintage workbench lamps! Nice find.

How much did you have to pay for the Mac truck? Did it come with tools?
 He's asking $15,000! It's vintage, but I can't tell how old, can you? 143,000 miles. I was seriously wondering if it came with the franchise and the guy's route/customers! :) Might be a fun "retirement" job. My other thought was Mobile Lugzsonian! The truck IS the Living History Display. Instead of hand-selling out of the back, you pull up in a Middle School PL or a Car Show and have a little vintage Tool Talk and history lesson in the back. I would plaster it with other vintage logos. :)

Some close-ups of today's haul. The box is for a KW-era Signal Corps spotlight. The battery stays in the box and the spotlight gets mounted on a pole in that holder on the corner with the power cable pass-through hole. I have a commercial marine version of the spotlight. Couldn't pass up the mechanics manuals. One of the antiquarian books is an early "calculator". I've seen these kinds of early "Reckoners" for the cement and lumber industry, but never generic before.

The bike wrench and the alligator wrench (branding unintelligible) are still de-rusting, but here's a c.1884 bits driver and the others.

Interesting the 305 looks to have mostly the same set of tools as my 5499 but the box cutouts and arrangement are different. The other difference I see is three of the 305 dies look different than the rest. My seven dies all look the same (same style).

I wanted to revisit this little lathe, which came with a bench and motor and all sorts of tooling ($250) I shared earlier (I think) and this cool martini shaker ($20ish with a cast iron car that I think is probably nothing) and share a picture with a water bottle for reference. I REALLY like these two pieces

A couple of years ago I found a 16oz Vaughn hammerhead rip claw type that needed a handle. Part of the haul yesterday was a bucket of hammer handles for $2, probably a lifetime supply. I guess I will fix up a couple hammers. I really like the Vaughn 16's and I love it when a plan comes together!

I noticed an old shop I drive by most every day put out a sign the other day so I stopped in to see what he had. The old guy had run a cabinet business but had already sold most of his power tools. He was motivated to clean out the rest so he could rent the space so I bought a few of his smaller items for $5.00 apiece.

The two doweling jigs are definitely something I can use. The Stanley 71 router plane was in really nice condition so I grabbed it too. The Knight variac works and should come in handy as well. I'm not sure what to make of the Craftsman drill driven sickel bar but it was the first I'd seen so I picked it up. The Craftsman 3/8 drill works and the Crown label box was cool... Also a few other things added in but these were the highlights. Ed.

Is it just me? I'm not seeing pelletman's pictures. Just a Do Not Enter symbol for each one.

I'm still seeing them, but it may e it's in my computers cache? If he hosted on google the first few see it then Google cuts access.

And he did host on google...

So google only lets the first few people see them? Damn, I am going to have to go back and fix that. I hate the upload function here. Any alternatives I should know about. I know one thing. NOT PHOTOBUCKET!!

2 Planned stops today based upon FB Marketplace CS ads. First was a dud since they only wanted twofiddy for fiddy dollars of tooling all or nothing ,second stop faired a bit better .Older man and his wife, emptying a lifetime garage of tools. Kinda picked over, didn't see any ratchets but grabbed 6 wrenches for $12 and headed home. Found the Bosch 18V battery laying in the road at an intersection so I saved it from peril. Sadly my tools are Makita and DeWalt.

So, Picker-of-the-Year plus Pick-of-the-Year...
:scared:NOooo!!!!

Upon re-review...
Seventy-one GS-threaders have received at least one “****” YTD.

The top four recipients are
(12) Davefr, bmwrd0
(10) r_olson_06, freudianfloyd

The top eight in the single-digit tier are
(7) tinmedic, b.well, Provincial, Rileysan
(6) pelletman
(5) Outlawmws, Old Radar, 3Jakes

I apologize for any clerical and/or accounting errors I may have committed here, but I will not be conducting any further investigations or statistical spelunking into months Jan-Aug, as a precaution against retcon rash, paradox psychosis, mobius malady, etc.

OK, so it's Pick-er only. Thanks for the clarification!

Mike

Awesome, didn't even know I was in the running.

I'm gonna hafta step it up

Hey, all: just a reminder that in our illustrious thread host's opening post, suction designations are only one factor to be considered.

"As inaugurated by Private Lugnutz and confirmed by BlueBomber, there will be a PICKER-OF-THE-YEAR trophy awarded at the end of the year. I will nominate 10 candidates with 20 or more posts on this thread who, in my estimation, exemplify the high standards of economy, quality, esprit-de-corps, perspicacity…(AKA “best year of finds”). GJers will then vote to choose the winner."

Also, remember this is all in good fun...:bounce:

In other news, some of you who were on previous Garage Sale threads may remember I was on a Craftsman Radial Arm Saw bounty hunt for a while. The Emerson Tool Company at the time was offering $100 for every saw head returned under a recall program, and they were paying for the shipping! Over about 24 months, I managed to turn in around 10 of the 8" & 10" saws, and have used the rest of the leftover parts (frames, nuts & bolts, etc) in numerous projects (including last year's PotY trophy!). Alas, all good things come to an end, and after Emerson dropped the bounty to $50 per saw, I quit the RAS rendering business.

However, during my hunting months, I acquired two Bronze-era Craftsman saws that melted my heart and I spared them from the chopping block. One was a 1960 model year and the other was a 1st-year-of-manufacture 1957 model. They were beauties, and still ran smooth on their 60 plus year old bearings, but who needs two radial arm saws? After spending the past few months advertising on FB Marketplace, I finally found a good home this weekend for the '60 saw. And, at a 60 dollar sale price, I not only made ten bucks on the deal, I also know the new owner won't be gutting her for the bounty!

The reason I share this story is that our hobby as recorded on this thread is about good bargains, for sure, but it's also about preserving and appreciating the history and long-lasting nature of garage-related tools (my scrapping of newer Craftsman RAS's notwithstanding). Although I haven't been on this thread nearly as much this year as in the past, I still check in to see the finds and really appreciate the odd, old and unusual that all of you are bringing in. Sure, You ***** are fun, impressive and practical (I've made this hobby mostly pay for itself with YS finds), but the stories and camaraderie are what keep me coming back.

Nothing near me this weekend, so best of luck to the rest of you! Happy hunting!

I went to one sale today. It was all I could handle since I decided to break some ribs a few weeks ago. It was decent though. I scored a nearly complete 3/8” sk set, a Giller box full of assorted 1/4” stuff, a thread gauge, 6” stilson, and the smallest cross peen hammer head I’ve come across.

Saw an estate sale advertised last week that was to start on Friday. It was listed as a tool sale of a former clock maker. There were 92 pics in the sale listing 87 of which were tools. Every pic had tables and shelves filled with tools. There were two two-car garages/workshops of stuff. I was first on Friday only to have the sale cancelled due to thunderstorms. I was first today. As the first person in I headed for the table of vises. Here's my haul for the day.

1st pic: 3 rolls of Norton & 3M abrasive cloth
2nd pic: 3 NOS hammer handles, screw driver, tack/nail remover and can of IBM lubricant oil
3rd pic: Stanley No 239 special dado plane (although it might be a 239-1/2), small unmarked jeweler's vise w/ 1-1/8" jaws, French Brookstone jeweler's anvil, Stanley No 700 corner bench vise with shop made aluminum jaws, Stanley bench vise w/ 2" jaws (haven't checked for model number, cool vise though) and a Wilson 2" baby bullet vise, made in Chicago.

TX shoots from the outside circle and SCORES! You **** on the anvil, Wilton Baby, - Oh heck - All of pic 3!

Thanks Outlaw. I passed on two much larger anvils each under $100. Probably should have grabbed those but I'm good with what I got. I had hoped to come home with a nice vise stand looked liked 5/8" or 3/4" steel plate and a B&D workmate with aluminum legs. Sadly, he had those priced at $125 each. Not interested at those prices. And not interested at 25% off tomorrow.

Thanks to BlueBomber for his well-crafted GS thread values reminder!

Today, half the family converged to move LesserDaughter2 out of the LesserHaus and into a new apartment, back down in Philly. On the return, I managed to get a vehicle to myself and stopped in at the Quakertown flea market for the FIRST TIME this calendar year. Glad to see many familiar vendors still at it, and most vendors and patrons wearing masks.
$12 brought home...
ballpein I think is True Temper (Dad had a 2lb sledge like it, and I picked up a matching claw last year), screwdrivers including a Bonney 08 (and a SpinTite-made wood handle Bonney KH14 nutdriver), Utica end nippers hiding under a ridiculous silver rattlecan makeover, PS&W lineman pliers, Red Devil putty knife (and what a handsome devil he is, too), hex key marked “Graham / Coudersport PA” (I don’t know what Graham is yet, but Coudersport was on the western edge of my widening gyre as a teen), SO stubby, four SO overstrike sockets (I hoped they’d fill in holes, but they’re all dupes - boo hoo) and a universal I think goes with them (PA or AP is stamped on some), 11/16 3/8dr DI socket, two bundles of bitbrace drillbits, and finally, what I think is a Plomb (Proto?) grindoff 4” adjustable date code B117.

Although in my pics, I forgot to mention the Perfect Pocket Gauge. What do folks know about this as google turned up nothing.

No clue. The numbers don't seem to tie in with wire gauges or drill sizes. The rectangles also indicate a specialty gauge.

Well I didn't get to go to any yardsales this weekend, but mine was a pretty big success. I made $1,400 in a day and a half, sold out of most of my stuff in the first few hours. I'd say for a bunch of junk that was in my way, I did pretty good.
