    Odd ball wrench

Never paid attention to this guy in a bottom drawer. Curious if anyone has knowledge. It is cast as indicated by a partial sprue remaining. One open end square and one hex. Two squares behind the open ends. Larger open end is actually two sizes. Crude casting has left material which interferes...

How not to clean a chimney!

My birthday, and one of the two days a year that I clean the chimney. Been doing it for 40 yrs. Decided to speed up the monotony. Chucked the three sections of fiberglass brush rods into a cordless drill. Yeah baby, power cleaned like I had stuck a boar pig down the hole, for about 30seconds...

    Hidden outlet?

In process of making and installing soffits. Existing exposed eves have a couple of weatherproof outlets for roof heat tape which will not be utilized. Does code permit just leaving them in place, enclosed under soffit? If not I can relocate or just terminate in the box.

    Restoring nuts and bolts

A simple technique. Some restorations involve keeping every nut/bolt original. Many times they are corroded and need clean up. Typically I hit my bench grinder with a wire wheel. A good method to keep control of the nuts is to thread them onto the end of the bolt and proceed. Catch the...

    Beefy belt sander

Weekend score at a garage sale. Just a heads up. Never tell your wife to take whatever is offered for your tools! $5.00 Model 315.11782. 4”” x 24” w/ dust collection. Couldn’t pass on it as my newer sanders are worn out. Definitely want to secure the work or it’ll launch it through a wall...

    Face block as exterior wainscoat.

When I built my garage in 96 I added steel support plates under the sill plates to support future face block as an architectural element. These plates extend 4” out from the wall and have been covered with angled flashing since day one. I’m interested in now adding three courses of...

    Yard sale score & question

Brace drills and auger bits masons levels, 100’ tape, flaring tool, new hack saw blades, pliers, screw drivers. None of it recent...

    Call me stumped

This has been hanging around the property for over 25 yrs as yard art. Anyone have a clue as to its original purpose. A basic hand actuated hydraulic unit w/ reservoir . But what did it attach to? A little faded green paint makes me think it belonged to a Deere or Oliver.

    Ryobi 40V Expand-It weed wacker

Hoping somebody has a clue on this tool. It’s in its 2nd season and intermittently refuses to run. It has two triggers. I guess it’s a safety feature. Amazon reviews are about the worst I’ve ever seen for any tool. Two pages of discussion over on City Data forum w/ no fix. Battery is fully...

    Tractor Supply

Did the river walk this AM. Noticed quite a bit of shelving/display steel in the heap of pallets out back to be trashed. Gave them a call, said I was welcome to it. I was getting low on light weight stock, now I’m not. One hr. with the angle grinder and one cut off disc. Thanks a bunch TS.

Another use for the H.F. Infrared temp gun

Twice now I’ve zeroed in on defective switches and outlets simply by shooting their temp from across the room. An electrical connection that is arcing produces heat, carbon and displaces metal of the wire and connector. These cheap little guns provide a quick review of circuit devices w/ a...

    Make the snow slide

I have an old metal, Propanel roof. Aesthetically it’s gone mostly dull and oxidized. The looks don’t bother me. What I’d like to accomplish is some kind of treatment/ coating that will encourage the snow to slide off. Multiple pitches, from 5/12 to 2/12. When we have a decent winter I have to...

    Air in hot water line?

Looking for suggestions here. We have a cabin that we visit every few weeks. Each visit there is air in the hot water only. Dissipates after initial use, is back next visit. Heater is gas,50 gal. Water is district central water. They put way too much chlorine in the water. So much that we dont...

    Repurpose of foam ear plugs

After decades of dried out caulk tubes, I finally hit on a near zero cost plug for partial tubes. In the past I’ve used wire nuts, duck tape, screws etc. this one is the best sealing by far. Just roll and force it in.

Sooo, just wrapping up a broken water line issue 3Feet under an in floor heat system. Had to reroute a new feed. Terminated the original galvanized stub up. I did rebond the system ground to what was left of the pipe as it comes up thru the slab. Question is, do I need to also tie a ground to...
