    what to build

Here’s my take on building type. To me, a steel red iron building is hands down the better building. In my area, they are also the most expensive. The inescapable fact is that you are burying your columns in the ground and rot is a possibility although in my area there are pole buildings that...

Gas line from meter into attached garage for heater

I know that this was not part of your original question but I’m going to share this anyway. These heaters are not all they are cracked up to be. I have one in my attached garage and use it to keep it above freezing. When it’s really cold and it runs a lot, it dumps a lot of water vapor into the...

A nice small shop or a bare bones large shop?

Definitely go large. You can add the nice to have stuff later as budget allows but can’t build it bigger if you go the smaller route!

    4 Post Aluminum Ramp Question

These are the aluminum ramps that I ordered for my Bendpak HD9. They are 36" X 19" X 4.5" high. They are made from .200" plate, which is not strong enough as they dished in after use. Nothing heavier that a K1500 Chevrolet crew cab. I pressed them straight and reinforced with the 2X wood as...

    Truss question. Replace with rafters?

In your educated opinion, as an engineer, would rafter ties placed 1/3 of the way up the rafters have performed as well as the steel top plate reinforcement?

Re-purposing HVAC Blower; Need Some Help

Are you sure the squirrel cage fan is going to do what you want? I had the same idea but after getting it built, I found that I could hardly feel airflow 5 ft in front of it! Apparently it couldn’t produce enough velocity. Hopefully yours will work better.

    Radiant Heat or just HVAC?

I do not. The shop is very well insulated and never got over 80-85 degrees this summer, so was not uncomfortable. I do have a 450 sq ft lounge area that I was plannng on having a mini split HVAC unit but don’t see the need now. Having spent 5 yrs at NU and knowing Lincoln, I would think AC would...

    Radiant Heat or just HVAC?

Hi. Where you at in Nebraska? I’m out in the panhandle. I heat 3600 sq ft with infloor radiant and as said above, I believe that it is the best possible heat. How big is the living space that you need to cool?

Small garage floor radiant heat divided into work areas?

In floor radiant heat is very economical, especially considering your location. I would heat the whole thing. I heat 3600 sq ft in Western Nebraska to 65 degrees for around $100 a month.

    Tubing installation question

Yes and no! Ultimately the air is heated but you feel warmer than you would normally at a given air temp due to heat radiating from the floor. I keep the air temp at 65 degrees at 5 ft above the floor but feel as comfortable as in my house at 73 degrees with forced air heat.

    Tubing installation question

Try not to overthink this. A radiant floor is very forgiving. I have 3600 sq ft of 5” concrete. I stapled the pex to 2” XPS with mesh laid over the top. I tried to maintain 12” spacing but it wasn’t uniform and varied in spacing in spots. I have two zones controlled by eye level air temp...
