Which do you use more 3/8 or 1/2 impact?

I work on Chryslers in NY. I need the 1/2" most of the time, because we are not good at bolts. Or nuts. Or any kind of fastener really. A good day is only the 1/2" impact. Most days it's the impact plus the torch. Some days it's both of those plus a drill bit and a tap. I often fantasize about...

    Need tool box advice

Keep an eye on Craigslist. I was going to buy a Classic 78 with my student discount a couple of years ago, but I found a used Krl 1022 for the same price. I like the layout and the extra space. Classic 78 is big enough for at least a couple years as an auto tech though.

Super-Exciting News for SK Day!! 9/23 and 9/24

Order 29017. I wasn't sure I was going to participate because funds are a little tight but then my wife said, "Just do it, you know you're going to regret it if you don't." I really love my wife lol. :bounce:

What is your favorite brand powertool?

I bought a 12V screwdriver from Milwaukee almost 5 years ago and it has done more work and taken more abuse than I could ever have hoped for. I also own a M12 3/8" rachet and a Fuel 3/8" impact and I'm happy with both. Any other purchases I make will be Milwaukee unless I can find a reason to...

Homemade wheel hangers for euro cars

I have a pair I made for Darts and Cherokees at work, since the stupid fiat platform cars come with wheel bolts. I just bought the longest bolts I could find and then cut the heads off. I tapered the end I cut off on the bench grinder and threw a coat of paint on them. Works great

    Let's see your Shop Clock

Here's the one we made at work. It's a Ram 3500 hubcap somebody nicked the lift arm with. Couldn't give it back to the customer like that but it's a pretty awesome clock!

    Tools you've found

Mac screwdriver, 16mm craftsman socket, 18mm swivel impact SO socket, and a 6 inch chrome extension. The 18mm swivel has been the most useful so far

Flaring tools: Which one would you pick, Eastwood or Mastercool?

I haven't used the Eastwood set, but I have the mastercool set and I love it. It's been a lifesaver a few times. I don't do brake or fuel lines that often, but when I do it's nice to be able to just flare the line on the car after I run the line. It's also nice to be able to patch a section of...

    Removing snapped bolt

I would drill it out. A big easy out might work if you have the capability to heat the threaded end/knuckle. I've been amazed how much it helps sometimes to get stuff hot. If you can remove the whole knuckle with the strut it would be easier to work with.

    Removing snapped bolt

What kind of car? That'll give me a better idea of what you're dealing with.

What do you use pry bars for?

I use mine for almost all of the things already listed, but here in NY it's also really necessary to have at least a 3 foot bar for removing wheels. Aluminum or steel rims corrode from the salt and become seized to the hub face. I've needed a 4 footer and a hammer from time to time on pickup...

Bolt buster or Mini ductor II: Anyone using; what do you recommend?

I haven't used a bolt buster, but Chrysler just sent us a miniductor as part of the jeep trailer hitch recall at work. I've used it a couple of times already for bolts where I didn't want the area around the bolt heated. Seems to work good so far. The coils can be bent pretty much any way you...

M12 Fuel 3/8 impact quick review

I bought the 3/8" fuel M12 a couple months ago and I love it. Plenty of power for the size and the battery life is excellent. There are still occasions where I need my 3/8" snap on air impact but its rare. It's awesome not being tethered to the wall. I had to do a cylinder head on a van at...

Best Light Duty 1/2 Ton Truck?

I would buy a new Ram 1500 if I had to choose. Take it for what it's worth. I work on them all day long but I am far from being any kind of a Chrysler fan. I just drove the new 3.0 diesel 1500 and I really liked it. Hemi trucks with the new 8 speed aren't half bad either except for the fuel...

are master mechanic tools any good?

I have a pair of USA Master Mechanic vise grips I bought years ago and I use them almost everyday in the shop. I like them better than Irwin ones. I've had to recut the jaws a few times from spinning struts or sway bar links with an impact, but other than that they've been great.

    Is snap on driver okay

Personally I would buy a Milwaukee M12 1/4 driver. Much more torque, longer run time, and after 4+ years of abusing it in the shop, the only thing that's happened is the grips are starting to fall off. I have one and so does one of the other techs; neither one of us would trade it for anything...
