    Not all slabs crack

Thought this video was interesting. Shows a nice curb detail, and IMHO the value of compaction and not adding water.

    lock miter bits

Building some newel posts for a small stair per attached dketch. They will support a 3'x4' landing about 3' above a floor as well as guard and hand rails. Planning on cherry (a lot of rough sawn at the very best price - free). Approx 5"x5". Never used a lock miter bit but seems to be a good...

    new tools

Some interesting and done silly inventions. https://www.core77.com/posts/126662/Cool-Tools-Spotted-in-2023 My favorite, certainly in the silly category, a tamper proof screw. (The screwdriver that converts to a T- handle was a close second - not so silly.)

    New to me problem

NM-B, 14 ga. I have a 3 (+ground) between a switch box and box for sconce. I'm trimming now but had temped one of the circuits - feed to one branch circuit. So in prep to trim out, my Klein no contact tester showed voltage on both wires. Verified neither end of that wire is terminated. Put...

    thermostat selection help

I'm looking for a very simple, mechanical, heat only thermostat with a day and night setting. This is an addition, a new zone on the boiler, but if I like it, I'll replace the other "programable" ones in the house. Those are set to stay at one setting 24/7. Can't stand them. Had Honeywell...

    neutral in switch box

Been too long since I wired 3-ways. I roughed in for two 3-way circuits. Box A has 2-wire feed, 3-wire to two separate lighting loads, and two 3-wire romex to Box B. Both boxes to have two 3-way switches. I was going to use the 3-wire runs, one for each switch, but to get neutral to box B...

    SIMPush (Sharkbite for EMT)

Just a new thing for me. I guess it could have been predicted. No opinion, just interesting I thought...

    T&G hardwood flooring questions

    1. I need to start not against a wall, because of a column. I know there is what I'll call a double tongue piece, a spline like piece, so you essentially end up with a tongue-and-tongue piece and can work both ways. WTF is that piece called? I know I once saw it listed but have had no luck...

    bi directional scan tool.

Another son "suggestion" for Christmas. Like a lot of what he uses, I have no idea what it is. (Another thread decried GJ users who can build a house and are good at every system in it, but can't change the oil in their car. That's me.) Quick Google puts these at a much higher price than I...

3/8" torque plus angle with flex head torque wrench

This is what my son asked for for Christmas. WTF is it? (I don't really need to know.) He said he can live without it, so not something he needs for earning a living nor to be used daily. I'd sure appreciate anyone pointing me to some reasonably priced options.

    framed floor insulating

Suspended 12 x 16 room addition - kind of like a deck with ledger on house (superior wall) with two concrete piers supporting a beam, and 2x12 joists. Advanced tech or similar floor with carpet, 2x6 walls with R19, don't know roof. Basically a sleeping room. How would you insulate floor? One...

    core drill

I need to drill through a 12" ICF - 8" concrete. 1 or 2 holes force 3/4" copper pipes. Can I do it with my 1/2 DeWalt corded drill (I think not hammer - it's been 5 years) and right bit or should I rent one?

    First time - shorted circuit

I think I've been vigilant and careful in my many years of diy electrical work. (Well, overlooking my grad school time 50 years ago when I'd tie portable dimmer boards - theatre lighting - into panels - hot.) Seems I must have put a drywall screw or nail into a piece of 14/3 NM-B. Popped a...

    trim tex's **** board

I wondered if anyone here had used these. I always thought this concept was a good idea. FHB or JLC once showed recessed blocking and a board so you could pull the **** ends back a little. https://www.trim-tex.com/products/buttboard-drywall-backer

    fibreglass insulation availability

I went to local building supply and discovered 6" fibreglass has become rare. I wanted unfaced 23 x 96 R19 batts - basic - but simply cant find any 6" unfaced fibreglass - R19 or R21, 16 or 24 at local (regional 5 store) supply or any HD or Lowes within 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Best I found was a 5...

    drywall lift

Recommendations for drywall lifts? Walls only, 11', thinking with lift I could handle 4 x 12 x 5/8 sheets. I see some for close to $100 on Amazon. ??? Harbor Freight might be close with a coupon. I'll probably sell it on Craigslist or market place. Half price? I did look and none close and...

    vinyl or steel j-bead?

Getting ready to sheet rock in a couple of weeks. I'm doing a detail at ceiling, windows, and doors that requires a j-bead, a lot. All I've ever used is steel and all I can find is vinyl. I like the stiffness of the steel, and the slight radius, where vinyl seems to end very square. Recent...

Can I put a tandem 20 amp arc fault breaker in this panel?

I have a full Square D Homeline HOMC30UC. Converting attached garage to living space and thought the 20 amp circuit was on its own breaker. Discovered a receptacle for a small sump pump and a water softener had been added. Code requires if I touch a circuit I replace breaker with AFCI breaker...

    air sealing

I may be getting to far into the weeds but am trying to do a good job air sealing this added roo - livable space. Putting 1x6 t&g prefinished ceiling. Plan to put 6 mil poly under (over?) t&g (and 20" of cellulose above that). Was wondering about the penetrations - 18 guage beads - from blind...

    vapor barrier color

Probably doesn't matter but buying vapor barrier - 6 mil poly - for under t&g and gwb. Have usually used clear, but see black and white are readily available. Any reason to not use clear? I suppose white would make the work easier between vapor barrier and t&g/gwb.
