    earth auger

I need to set three PT 6x6s for a porch addition. I originally was going to hire it done but started looking at buying one or renting one. Local rental is a 5hp "cable" unit, 14" max, for $85/day, and a 13hp tow behind, 16" max, for $109. Reasonable to think I can do 3 holes 4 to 5' deep in a...

    porch addition 3

Working on guard railing around porch. A little over 80'. We liked a system with horizontal round bars but really expensive, so came up with my own. My question is if you have used galvanized pipe for exterior railings, are you pleased with the result?

    headlight replacement

2018 Subaru Outback. Left DRL is not working. The little strip above main headlights. Dealer says $1100. $900 part and $200 labor. Supervisor said I might find a non-oem for as little as $500. It is all of the lighting in that corner. I may poke around and see if I can find any loose...

    porch addition 2

I think I know the answer but I guess hoping someone can convince me I'm wrong. Wrap around porch about 6 1/2 ft deep. Ledger on top of foundation wall, and 6x6 pt posts along perimeter - about 6 1/2" o.c. I want to put a 13 x 6 1/2 foot extension on middle of long - 26 ft - side, basically 2...

    water softener issues

A whirlpool softener. Not sure how old. Looks pretty generic based on YouTubes. I know nothing of softeners. Seems to have worked for over the 5 years we have lived here. Went to add salt and tank was full of water - right to top. Bypassed, used compressor to blow out drain lines, and cleaned...

    attic mold

I was asked about attic mold. Folks have an offer in on a 100 yr old house. Their ho.e inspector found mold in much of attic - board sheathing and rafters. It had been painted over. Besides the work to prevent it recurring - probably vents and air sealing - anyone had mold remediated? I think...

    fiber optic wire?

I hear and read about the air traffic control issues and complaints at Newark and they're blaming copper wire and saying it need to be fiber optic wire? Just sounds like people dont know what they're talking about. Am I to much a dinosaur in think they should be saying fiber optic cable at...

    Building Codes - Michigan

In another thread I was surprised to discover Michigan was on the 2015 model codes and then I saw this article on their efforts to update. https://www.mlive.com/environment/2025/01/michigan-forges-ahead-with-modernizing-10-year-old-building-codes-amid-industry-pushback.html It's my opinion the...

    More boiler problems.

So it continues, or restarts. No heat this morning. Boiler cold. I manually restart it - reset button on the gun. Fires up and runs maybe 4-5 minutes, stops, and then I a minute or less restarts on its own. Keeps cycling like this till house warms up. Starts to get cold and manual reset...

    Fire alarms

Simple question I hope. I have 6 wired alarms. No idea how old but more than 5 years and one doesn't work so removed. First Alert 9120B the one on my lap says. Any reason to not replace all with combo fire and CO2 alarms?

    portable compressed air tank

I like to keep my Emglow compressor in my basement shop, at least in winter. It's heavy and I'm older and some disabilities. Will a portable compressed air tank be useful for topping off tires and maybe the occasional few finish nails? I'm assuming much lighter. Was looking at Harbor Freight 5...

Never had a joiner and have wanted one. What's it going to take to make this useable?

    spray foam slab insulation

Had not read of this here but saw this on another site and found it interesting. "For the past 15 years or so we've been making the recommendation to install spray foam for any insulated concrete slabs. We prefer a tamped crushed stone base and the spray foam can be installed in a fraction of...

    Fuel oil tank leak

A completely new one for me. 275 gal oil tank in basement - full - and its leaking. New in 1994. Looks like rust or corrosion in the middle of the steel - not at joints or where legs attach. Plumber is getting pump and barrels to get old out, then I guess we'll see if patching is an option or...

    generator transfer

Inlaw house. An electrician installed an inlet on house for portable generator. Is this a code approved transfer? Also, since this displaced 4 circuits in an already full panel, the added a 6 circuit no main sub panel adjacent. Is that code? 2018 in NYS. Thanks!

    Barn light on rough sawn

I'm sure this has been answered but not sure what to search for. Want to mount a barn light with about a 6" round canopy on a "board" of board and batten siding. Plan is to cut in a 4" round box and wire from behind - probably EMT or FMC. Do I try to "waterproof" the canopy to the board or just...

    Porch addition

I'm in early planning of an addition to our porch - basically a hip coming off a lean-to roof. Long wrap around porch that's too shallow to sit on so an approximate 12 (2 existing posts) x 9 or 10 feet addition off center of a 24' wide porch. Not certain of what solutions for tying new roof to...

New to me Suby Outback glutch

Hate these electronics. So apparently door not closed tight - seat belt blocked - and car would not start. Tried to open hatch but would not unlock so got starter jump thingy climbing over rear seat. Started fine BUT the hatch open beeper was on. Stays on for about 1 1/2 minutes when I put it in...
