    dead bolt back set

So I have 6 exterior doors installed. 2 came pre-bored for a lock set and dead bolt. We want just deadbolts on the other 4, but could not order them pre-bored for just dead bolts (for a reasonable price - like $300 per door). So I bought the kit with a plastic fixture jig/guide, hole saw...

    arlington 8141fgc

Just trying to confirm that for a new vinyl siding install (or reinstall in my case to be precise) this mounting block is the preferred one? It seems so simple and easy - not sure what I'm missing. The idea of not recessing a jb (especially in middle of 8 or so trimmers I have existing) is...

    hardwood flooring and sub flooring

Looking ahead to fall and continuing conversion of garage to living space. My current plan is from 25+ year old slab which I suspect may be insulated, at least by icf stem walls if not foam under it: 10 mil poly; 2x4 sleepers 19.2" on center, cedar shake shimmed to level; 1 1/2" XPS between...

loose fill in attic and access

I'm planning to put 20" of cellulose in attic of attached 22 x 24 room, once I get ceiling in. Trusses - half 12" and half 16" on center - 5:12 - so just 5' top to bottom. Access will be a hinged vent in one table, 22" x 30". Seems like I need a way to get to near to far end for blowing...

    used 24 x 32 pole barn

my son is looking at an existing 24 x 32 x 10 (or 12 )pole barn, owner wants $5000 and buyer disassembles and removes. Not too old. Embedded posts on 8' centers, trusses 8' on center, 2 - 10 x 8 overhead doors, dirt floor, no insulation or interior finish - just farm equipment storage. I said...

pigtail plug boxes - maybe aka suspended receptacles

I've decided to use plug and cord connected led strips to illuminate garage - basically 5 rows of 2. I wanted to feed each pair with a duplex but cords supplied with fixtures are not long enough. All my career I've designed stage lighting systems with pig tail boxes like these: And I found...

Puck lights in perforated vinyl soffit

Is this possible or doomed to fail? If a no go, what about a pendant from a vinyl soffit? If wiring above soffit, is removing soffit acceptable for the required access? 5 lights or so.

    sub panel mounting

I have this panel I'm reusing. I believe it's rain tight but I'm using indoors. Can I mount it up side down? All the kos are perfect for that. Otherwise I have to fill and punch one 1" for feed (and don't want to buy a drill or greenlee for one use at age 71.) it's a Cutler-hammer BR BR816L125RP

    panel ground minor detail

I have a under ground for a sub panel in a detached building. It's an Uber, no. 4 copper, rising to panel through block cores and then less than a foot to panel. Should I run it through a knockout with a 2 screw (Romex) clamp, a bushing, or bare? Seems no clear code language.

quick question - gable and truss

I want to put a gable vent in - for blowing in cellulose and code required access. Looking at framing I believe the vertical is not a part of the truss, but was added to support sheathing, like builder didn't think to order a more suitable gable truss. No splice plates, looks like it was used...

    airless sprayer quick question

I'm thinking of buying a Graco X5 or X7 - reconditioned if I can find one - initially to paint - solid stain - my barn/garage. How long can I pause, to go down and up a repositioned ladder for instance? I just can't get a sense of how fast it sets up.

    vapor barrier and electrical boxes

Heating climate, lots of insulation, 6 mill vapor barrier under drywall - what's your favorite means of making vapor barrier continuous around electrical boxes?

    another vapor barrier question

My current project converting garage to habitable space. Because of 12" ICF stem walls, building an inner wall so cavity is about 12". Existing "outside" wall has craft paper faced fiberglass. I plan 8" batts in inner wall with a 6 mil poly vapor/air barrier on inside. Can I leave the craft...

    UF-B or pvc

I'm having some fill and top soil brought in to build up grade around new driveway and barn/garage Tuesday, and he's willing to toss in a trench for a drain and wiring to a new post light. I'll be at least 24" deep - just lawn - and was weighing the two alternatives. Leaning towards 1/2" PVC...

another LED strip light quicky question

    hydronic radiator placement

I'm almost decided to add a zone to my boiler for conversion of existing attached garage to living space, as opposed to mini-split. Just seems much less expensive (and I like hydronic heat!) Just not sure where to place base board radiators or if I should look at panels or vertical tubes...

    Junction box question

Extending a sub panel feed across an attic I'll insulate. Local inspector says junction box has to be above loose fill insulation. 1" pvc conduit, and I'll elbow up to a box, and back down to continue across lower chords of trusses. 2 hots, neutral, and a ground, all #6, all spliced in the...
