Surface-mount EMT question as I ready for rough inspection

Surface-mount EMT question as I prepare for rough inspection I'm about to start getting ready for the electrical rough inspection by running EMT to minimal locations - a couple switches, a couple outlet circuits including one for a garage door opener, and a couple lights including an exterior...

    Designing a new garage

This, certainly. I found an inspiration here, laid out a design in Sketchup from the pictures and the site where the shop was going, then sent my design to the engineer who did the full plans. Since you won't be building yourself, you could bring photos to the developer/contractor showing...

    The Garage Files

I'm up to six of the index card file cabinets (7 to 11 drawer), plus three 4-drawer and three legal file cabinets. I may paint them all someday, or maybe not. For the most part, they aren't for manuals.

    18' Scaffolding - Thoughts

To answer the OP, I have that exact same Baker setup. I've used two sections (with outriggers and safety rails) so much that it's no big deal. The third section adds some wobble for sure, but it's still safe unless you push the side to side limits. It's surprising what you get used to. We first...

    Air conditioning the shop.

I'm in Pensacola and just closed in my shop (ongoing build). I can't fathom any AC unit being able to keep up with the Florida sun on the building without insulation. Yes, it might be able to drop a few degrees, but it's still going to be hot in the afternoon. Insulation in the ceiling will...

    Pole building quote, input appreciated

I agree with the Capt's overhang thoughts. My building is 21' at the peak and I did 16" overhang on all sides for looks. The overhang looks tiny compared with the scale of the building. It also does little to cut down on splashing on the lower part of the walls - again, due to the height...

Let's set some trusses... No, not happening..

My wife and I placed mine with a hand crank material/duct lift. The slab had been poured previously, and it was easy and stable.

Where do you get your bolts?

A few years ago at an estate sale, I bought two 48QT coolers full of greasy nuts and bolts for pocket change. Shortly after I'd degreased and sorted that, my father in law downsized and gave me 7-8 5-gallon buckets full of clean mixed nuts and bolts that he'd accumulated but never sorted through...

Garage Door Lighting - Unboxing and Install

I had a DIY set up on the garage door at our old house (sorry, no pictures). I had a loop on the cord with a small weight hanging on it. When the door was open, the weight pulled out the slack. It worked great for me. I did find, however, that I normally only used the lights when the door was...

Pole built shop or stick built?

I was required to have engineer-stamped plans for my build. I had difficulty finding an engineer that would be willing to do this. For them, it would have been outside the box work, so they'd have to do all of the associated math vs using previous work with small changes. One told me that if he...

How long can framing be exposed to the elements?

On my building, on Feb 25 last year, I had the roof finished except for two pieces of ridge cap but no metal siding on the girts. Then I had an accident that prevented me from doing anything on the build until this Spring. The framing lumber has turned silver, but there haven't been any issues...

    What's this 40 x 100 shop house worth?

As you can see from the posts above, land value as well as overall real estate varies considerably by location. If you can find one acre lots for sale around there, you can use their prices as a land value guideline. There are formulas for rentals, and as has been said, price out new steel...

Clever ways to lift a shed to move it?

This. As others have said, you may have to temporarily attach 2x"s to the long sides at or near the bottom of the walls to give you a more secure lift point. We moved a 12x24 shed with round wooden fence posts. Moved it about 80' and turned it 90 degrees. It was slow, but not difficult.

    Siding over steel trusses

This is how I did it. I can't remember the Simpson part number. They were placed in front of the angled girts.

zoning limits on size and height of detached garage

My wife said that my to-be-built shop couldn't be larger than the house... ...so we moved into a bigger house. =D
