Anybody make the switch to smart light switches?

--DISCLAIMER-- I haven't seen every consumer router router config. That sounds more like an issue of how the static IP's were set up. There's usually a way to set the DHCP scope/pool (which IP's are available for DHCP) and the netmask for the wireless network (which IP range is "local" -...

    Garage Door Struts

The door was engineered for the wind load for your area. The struts give the door the needed lateral stiffness. If the door blows in during a hurricane, the garage and more of your house could follow. I'd be hesitant to swap them out without input from the garage door company. I just finished...

    Brother P-Touch Label on 2X4

Another (non 2x4)tip: attach printed labels to sheet magnet, then cut out and use to list what is in metal drawers. I use them on file cabinets. When things move, as they invariably do, the magnet follows.

    Framing Materials

On my plans, the engineer specified #2 SYP, or better. I'm pretty sure I read something about minimum lumber for framing in the code, as well (and "white wood" wasn't mentioned).

    Preserving overhead space

High lift or vertical lift are the things to search for to see how to route a sectional door with higher ceilings.

Was there any part of your garage build that drove you crazy trying to figure out

Exterior trim - especially on the outside corners between the main roof and the lower lean-to roofs. My building has a 16" overhang on all sides, and I couldn't find any reference photos of other metal-sheathed pole buildings in this configuration.

Anyone want to take a guess about what size this shop is?

I'd guess 16' ceiling also. With the pitch, might be 20 at the peak of the roof.

"protecting conduit openings at bottom of panel?

This is 3" with MHF. I tried to use a telescoping magnet retriever, but can't get it far enough into the conduit. I then tried to use a large magnet outside of the conduit, but the bit and screws must be underground. Regardless, I seriously doubt they'll cause a problem with the MHF. I just...

"protecting conduit openings at bottom of panel?

Duct seal is cheap and easy to find, so that's what I will use. When I volunteered with Scouts, I taught wilderness survival. Steel wool plus a 9 volt battery makes an impressive fire starter. Try it. I wouldn't put any near electrical components.

"protecting conduit openings at bottom of panel?

"Protecting" conduit openings at bottom of panel? Two ground screws and the square bit from my 11-in-one have already fallen into the abyss. What's a compliant way to "plug" the upper end of conduit at the bottom of a panel to keep things from falling into them? Rag? Paper towel? A layer of...

    Horse Barn into Workshop

Depending on where you are located specifically, the 4x4 posts might succumb to wind before they rot. I'm finishing up a workshop build near Pensacola, and mine was engineered for 140mph windloads - 6x6 posts. The inspection department said that they are starting to see more post frame...

Advice on running conduit in long runs

I'm in the same boat as the OP (44x50 with panel in one corner), but I have been planning on a subpanel in the opposite corner from the beginning. However, this discussion has got me questioning something else. Since the "main" shop panel is a subpanel and the ground and neutral aren't bonded...

    Liftmaster H-2211 Commercial Door Opener

The Liftmaster H-2211 opener looks like it was designed to be used with roll up doors. Does anyone know if it could be used in a high lift installation with a standard garage door? My gut says it can, since it operates by turning a shaft (via sprockets and a chain) but wanted to check here...

Considering renting an excavator, can I really be useful with it?

I rented an excavator for part of my shop site prep and a skid steer for another. The skid steer was easy to learn, easy to use, quick and agile. The excavator had a steeper learning curve. I used every minute of my alloted meter time and barely got that part done. I'd rent a skid steer...

    Work bench question

+7 on Masonite (tempered hardboard). Mine is two layers of 3/4 MDF topped by a solid core door topped by the hardboard. I wrapped the whole assembly with solid lumber trim so that the hardboard is flush with it. I then covered the hardboard with a couple coats of water-based poly. It's held up...

Surface-mount EMT question as I ready for rough inspection

Interesting. I'll call the permit office on Monday and verify that they expect the same, but that will make things a little easier. That said, conduit bending is a skill. I might be passable at it by the time I am done. Pretty pitiful at the moment, though - and slow.
