    Pole Barn Post Method?

I had to use concrete due to the windload (hurricane zone). Every area will be a bit different.

    osb on girts?

I've just finished hanging OSB in mine. With 12 screws per sheet, even in the long sides end on a stud, you'd only have a screw every 2'. You'll be fine.

    Trusses for Pole Barn

I used similar metal trusses, but had them add clips to the bottoms as well so I could attach a ceiling.

    Setting up tall baker scaffold?

I have the exact same setup, but always use it either one section high at 6' or both at 12'. I stand on the lower platform to assemble the upper. Just make sure you put the outriggers on and lock the wheels before you start adding the upper parts. I place an 8' ladder next to the 6' platform so...

Pole building independant floor/ building movement ?

My engineer specced a slab with foundation that was interconnected with the post footers. A friend of mine warned me that this would lead to cracking around the post footers. I discussed it with the engineer, and he said that it wouldn't. Three posts have hairline cracks roughly above the edge...

Pine VS Oak bracing in barn

Those horizontal pieces are what are referred to as girts. On my drawing, they were spaced 24" on center. There's also a best practice for screw placement on the metal when it goes up. Whoever sold your supplies should be able to provide those details. I don't know exactly where you are, but...

What is your “I wish I would have during your build...?

24" on center stud spacing. Makes for easier placement of interior sheathing.

Pine VS Oak bracing in barn

If your new building was built for current windload requirements, the posts are seriously anchored, and oversized, and the exterior sheathing will prevent racking far better than any horizontal bracing you'd add. If you want to add something to attach interior sheathing, pine would be better...

What is your “I wish I would have during your build...?

Wish I'd done from the start: 24' OC means start from a corner and stick to it all the way across walls. Don't re-start at each post. Doh. Amateur mistake.

Has anybody here built their garage THEMSELVES?

Yes. My wife and I have done everything but finishing the slab. It's a 2,200 SF pole barn that will be finished inside and conditioned. I don't do any of this stuff professionally - I'm in IT. I had some challenges finding someone to do plans for the shop. It's not a standard design. I spoke...

My mind is blown. Garage lights

This is absolutely true. I placed my switches at the same height as the outlets, which is a little higher than the "standard" switch height. I always miss low in the dark. Mine are all surface-mount, and I have enough slack to drop the switches down. If you don't have the flexibility, get...

    2/0 into 100AMP breaker

After reading a lot of threads on this topic here, I used these Polaris clones to drop to a short length of smaller wire: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GDFQQE/?tag=atomicindus08-20 My inspector didn't even blink when he saw how I'd connected the feed. If you have room in your panel...

If you had it to do all over...

I ran two 20amp circuits down each wall and have one outlet on each circuit in each box. Probably overkill for a one man hobbyist shop, but it's a one time cost.

Wall height for minimal trimming of studs and sheeting?

Due to several factors, the walls at the low sides of the lean-to sections on my build are 3 3/4" more than even sheets. Instead of ripping sheets, I'm going to run a strip of treated 1x that's been ripped to that width as base molding, then set the sheets on top of it. I'll probably run it...

    A tough finish for plywood?

+3 for tempered hardboard. I coated mine with water-based poly, and it barely has a mark and cleans up well. My bench has a lip the height of the hardboard, so it's a flush top, but it's still easily reversible and eventually (in theory) replaceable.

Buy or DIY?! Electrical Run to "Barn"

There's a local electrical supply house that's DIY friendly and will sell to anyone. Many aren't and won't, though. It may be worth calling around, depending on your overall project size. Big box stores will have just about anything you'd need, though.

Truss clips on inside or outside?

450 MPH windload requirement here, and the inspector was fine with inside. I'd check with the inspector before sheathing the exterior.

Buy or DIY?! Electrical Run to "Barn"

Get busy digging the trench. It will be easier now than in a few months. I'm in NW FL, and I had a 300' run - half of which I had to do by hand due to obstructions. I did it in June. In full sun. Yes, sand/clay is easier than rocks. ANY digging in 100 degrees with 98% humidity sticks. To the...
