I will take that advice, and use a 2-pole breaker in the panel, and not use individual GFCI receptacles. The question I still have is that due to fact that 240V loads don't use neutral, how does the GFCI breaker react to a load on red & black, with no neutral involved with that load.

I disagree. Water quality is a factor too. I replaced my "12 Year Warranty" gas heater after 9 due to extreme hard water depositing a lot of calcium, plugging up the drain faucet. It didn't leak a drop.

I assume you mean the ground rod conductor was also bonded to the gas line. If so, LOL. When I replaced my main panel, inspector gave a big thumbs up on connecting the ground rod conductor to the gas line, as well as the water main, on it's way to the ground in the panel.

I thought neutral carried same amount of amperage as the hots, just back to the source.....?
