Rechargeable screwdriver converted to alkaline batteries

An oldtimer came into the store wanting to know if we could replace his unresponsive rechargeable batteries in his B&D screwdriver. A co-worker tried to take the thing apart before calling me. When I looked at the thing I informed the customer I didn't think it was meant to be disassembled and...

    Pawn shop score

Here's some tools I snagged at a pawn shop over the weekend. Lots of nice little tidbits. Could use some help with IDing the valve adjustment tool. The only marking is RAP 612.

I.D. on odd locking handle pliers

Found these today, just too weird to pass up. Slip joint, spring loaded friction plate lock on handle. No markings. Anybody have an ID and age?

    Anybody else into Harrold Tools?

Got interested in Harrold tools for personal reasons. I have found three screwdrivers in 4 years of looking. Steel isn't bad, handles are decent. I know they also made pliers, but I've never come across one in the wild. Here's some info on the...

    Post up your Thorsen tools!

I've had a Thorsen 3/8" drive 77 ratchet for years, never had a problem with it. Was told somewhere by somebody that they were the AK-47's of the ratchet world. And I believe it. Figured I should start a Thorsen thread, as I can't remember seeing one on the forum anywhere. So, if you've got...

    Last weekends pawnie finds

Met a forum member out of town last weekend to sell him a tool he needed, and then went into a pawnshop I know that has 18x18x18 inch bins full of old tools. Obviously, you gotta do alot of digging - and I had two hours of pure joy scrounging up stuff!:) He had a prior appointment, and couldn't...

    Rust Buster is being re-formulated

I used up the last of my Rust Buster penetrant, and went into the warehouse to pick some up. the shelf was empty. So, I asked the counter guy if he had any in the back somewhere. He didn't think so, but would check the computer to see if they had an order in. Then the fatal phrase, "uh oh"...

Found a couple of neat drivers today.

A Proto yellow handle stubby, and two no-name magnetic screwdrivers. They look like Snappys, and seem to be Snap-On contract tools for a medical company. Comfy handles, strong magnets.

My set of tiny ball (drivers)

Small ratcheting ball drivers. Someone was asking about small EASYDRIVER balls and bits. About 1 inch in diameter, great for decent torque inside computers and appliances. Here's my small set.

    OOOOLD Rooftop gaspac

Rather than hijack the melted thermocouple thread, I decided to start another related one. Came across this unit a couple of years ago. From the mid to late 60's, but it had intermittent spark ignition! They did it with all sorts of old style electro-mechanical relays and pressure switches. It...

    Ratchet repair: Crescent LT70

I received a ratchet in the mail today from a member who has the socket set from his grandfather. It broke during use, and being it has sentimental value I offered to try my hand at fixing it. If we can. So, this thread will be a photo tutorial of my attempt to restore this tool to operation...

    My repaired Bonney ratchet

Member SMKS sold me a 3/8" Bonney rat with "lazy pawl" syndrome. Took a bit to get it apart and de-gunked, had to "make" a new pawl spring. But she's back together clicking nicely. Here's a few pics of the procedure. Disassembly of the gear assembly, new detent ball and spring, pawl spring...

My current set of Proto yellow handles

A forum member (thanks HandToolGuy!) sent me a 12" Proto I didn't have. Thought it was time to show my current collection of Bet R Grips. Not counting duplicates or modified drivers, I have 25 out of 42 drivers that Proto offered.

    My latest tool box refurb.

A fellow forum member donated a FACOM cantilever tool box to me to see if I could save it and make it decent looking and useable. Took over a month of sanding, straightening, and painting, but we finished it up today. Might put some white drawer liner in the bottoms to cover up the pits, but...

Question: How many brands of 3/8" in 1/4" ratchets?

Since getting my Bonney made up, I've started to see more references the this style. What manufacturers made them? Figured Snappy, Wright, and S-K for starters. I also think I saw a MATCO at one time. But who else? Or, like mine, what 3/8" gear clusters will interchange into a 1/4" body so...

My "new" Bonney 1/4" ratchet with 3/8" drive gear!

Member over at GG picked up a couple of Bonney 3/8" drive torque wrench rebuild kits, and discovered that they fit into a Bonney 1/4" rat body! Knowing how popular that configuration is, I asked him to send me one of those kits. Lo and behold, it drops right in! And I'm not aware that Bonney...

    Controlled Steel DOE's

Picked up a Controlled Steel wrench some years ago. Made by JP Danielson. I never really liked OE's, but the shank shape on these is very comfy to hold. I then found another, and just recently got two more as gifts from forum members. It's now official - I'd like to complete the set. I have 4...

    Old drill info please

Snagged this 1/4" drive drill about a year ago. Been using it, ran fine. A little bit of a burnt smell seemed to come out of it. I just thought it was the old insulation. Decided to take it apart and check it out. Glad I did! Full of sawdust and soot, gear grease was dry and hard, a real mess...

    Spreading the Bonney affliction!

A member messaged me and complained (i.e. thanked me) about how I got him "addicted" to Bonney tools. I said I was sorry (not). So, I thought I'd help spread the Bonney bug around some more.:D Here's my set of long DBE's in metric, satin combos in SAE, and a trio of rats.
