    Common metric bolthead sizes ?

I was digging in my metric cabinet and checked what large metric wrenches I had. At work the 30mm and the 24mm were the only ones commonly used on the newer machinery. On some of the old machinery I used 21mm in place of 1/2" Whitworth. So besides 24mm and 30mm, what other sizes should I keep my...

    Side Cutters

Are there any brand of side cutters where the cutting edge is flush. My three pair all have bevel on the outside, the main bevel is on the inside. They would be nice for snipping nails flush on trim to reuse, instead of leaving a stub.

    The Workshop Dream

This different than a dream workshop. To get one of those you need to win a lottery. Instead where all the chisels and handsaws are sharp, the workbenches are clear and all the old machines are repaired and modified to better than new. I'm retired now, I don't think I'll live long...

    It Always Happens

:bounce: I go into a liquidator to see what they have found now. They have Jet stubby combination set. for $28. I just bought a Williams set for $42, but to complete it I bought a Jet 19mm , a Gearwrench 16mm and a lucky fleamarket find Mastercraft set with a 11mm.My wife was with me and I...

    Stubby combinations

After watching my neighbor change his son's Dodge CTD power steering pump, I realized I better get a set of stubby combinations before mine went. Off Amazon I got a Williams 7piece metric set , really nice but missing 11mm, 16mm and 19mm. The CTD took 16mm and 18mm. I found a most of a set of...

    DublHex wrench

Another fleamarket find, a DublHex offset DBE,3/4"x 25/32". This one is raised panel/recessed. Here is a write up on them http://progress-is-fine.blogspot.com/2014/01/we-used-to-make-things-in-this-country_27.html

    Poor Fit ?

On reading a review of stubby combination, he mentioned the poor fit marking a machine. What is poor fit ? I don't mean loose or tight, rather real numbers . Like plus .010" or what.

    Using the Old Tools

I was working on some older lapidary equipment for the club. I was redoing the coolant lines in 1/4" copper tubing . I did use a long Mastercraft Maximum combination to break a couple of the compression nuts loose. But for putting it back together a Pennens Corp Canada. It was shorter, handier...

Cleaning Up Ends of Copper Tubing

I'm setting up a lapidary shop for our rock and gem club. Diamond wheels require water lubricate , so each polishing wheel gets it's own tap. The piping is 1/4" copper tube. I've cut the tubing with a #10 Ridgid tubing cutter and tried cleaning up the ends with attached reamer. There has to be...

    A Fleamarket Funny

At the fleamarket I was talking to a dealer and another guy. I got a great deal, it's in garage sale thread. He asked if it was Snap-On, I said no. I told him even used Snap-On isn't worth it, there is no warranty unless you are the original purchaser. The guy beside me tells me he tried to...

    An odd shade of Gray

Wrench that is. A fleamarket find was a 11/16 x 19/32 open end. It was Gray Forged Steel , not Gray Chrome Vanadium, nor Dreadnought nor Maple Leaf. It doesn't show up in the Gray-Bonney catalogue of '52

Top Line Taiwanese Tool Brand ?

While I've been impressed by the quality of Taiwanese made Gearwrench, Jet or K-Tool sockets, they are not Stahwille or even Snap-On. What is their top brand?

    The Changing CoO

I saw Wes using some hose pliers on a vid and thought, hey, those are handy. Amazon was $85 for three plier double X Gearwrench set, but in this weeks Princess Auto flyer, it was $17 for a Titan three plier set, single cross. Made in India, bit rough, but these won't be work tools. Also for $9 a...

    Wright Deep Sockets

As I was disappointed with my S-K deep socket purchase. I like fully broached deep sockets and the S-K weren't, but the Wrights that just received are. Well finished ,too. If you like fully broached deeps, Wrights are.

    Lessons Learned on GJ

I just found this forum fairly recently, but have been on various hunting , machining and woodworking forums for some time. The exchange of ideas and tips are great way to learn . I've found the auto mechanics experiences both interesting and valuable. - the use of 1/4" drive on modern cars, I...

    Dynamic brand sockets

This is Gray's imported brand, like Bluepoint to Snap-On. They no longer make Maple Leafs. I picked up some 3/8" drive 6pt metric sockets to fill in. These are nice sockets. The deep stamp is easily read by old eyes as well as having the laser etch. There is a cross hatch knurling band, which I...

    New Tool Disappointment

Imagine with being disappointed with new tools. First was a S-K 18mm 1/2" deep off Amazon, the broach was shallow. I like deep broaches, still, it's better than the one I didn't have. The other was a new Gray 5/8" combination. I had given up hope of finding a full polished one in the...

    "Long "brand DOE wrench ?

Again I found another odd ball wrench at the fleamarket. It's a well made engineers wrench form the '50s ,maybe. The heads are polished, the shank is as cast, the common finish of that vintage. The shank edges are ground and the broach is crisp. On one side cast in 7/16 "LONG" 3/8 On the...
