    Hose pliers ?

I was watching a vid and he used one. That was a lot easier than the struggles I've had. Maybe I need one of those. On wander through Princess Auto, they had two different types of them one like ordinary pliers, the other with double pivots. What the difference in use, besides price ?

    Retail Changes

Since joining here, I've inventoried my tools. I'm a retired millwright, so there were two sets, home and work. But there was a few gaps. One was a 18mm 1/2" drive 12pt deep. In the past I've bought my work tools from industrial suppliers using the company discount, Proto or Gray . So I thought...

    ETF Tools of St. Catherines

I have the remains of a 1/2" drive socket set I bought in the late '60s. When I looked at a 1962 catalogue, there were lots of write ups on hammers ,chisels and wrenches, but only a price list for the socket sets. Mine was $35.00. So the question comes who made the socket sets. The easiest way...

    Snap-on Canada Warranty ?

I just got off the phone. no warranty. It was a 3/8" breaker bar that came with a set of old 1960 S-K sockets. It was a factory defect, they had too rapidly cooled the handle end and it was brittle so when the original owner reefed, it broke. The head should have given way first. Since I didn't...

    Blackhawk Tools

After reading alloy facts, I learned Blackhawk tools were one of the early developers of the sockets we know today, but I'm not interested old stuff or for that matter the current Stanley imported, rather the Blackhawk Hand Tools of Covington Georgia. A local tool store 15 or 20 years back was...

    L.S. Starrett #86 Vise

Full Gloat mode on. I picked up this https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/s-starrett-86-machinist-hand-vise-1832366636 at the fleamarket today He wanted $20, I paid $15 grudgingly. At least I tried to look that.

    Socket Warranty

I know I'm a heretic, but why worry about it ? I've broken two , maybe three 15/16 1/2 drive sockets over the years. 5/8th bolts rusted solid on log decks will do that with a flex bar and snipe. Smaller than that, the bolt always broke first.

    2 Snap-On toolboxes $1250

Widow selling late mechanic husband's toolboxes and tools for $1250 on CL. One box was a 44"? and the other a 26", nicely laid out tools. No, I didn't buy it. It was an 7 hours old and an hour if traffic was good away. Besides I have my tools I've collected and used over a life time. But some...

    Proto Warranty

In my fleamarket finds, I ended up with a 3/8" T-handle . When they made it, they made the head where the tommy bar slides too soft. It's really sloppy. They messed up on the heat treatment. The bar should have bent or broken first. So for sh**s and giggles I took it into a store for Proto...

    Garage Journal attacks wallet, again.

Thanks guys, I bought a set of S-shaped obstruction wrenches, something I didn't really knew about until being enlightened by you guys. 60% off, $29.99 Mastercraft Maximum, 8 piece metric and SAE. A Canadian dollar is worth 75cents USD . If I ever use one, it's paid for, and if I never have to...

The Billings and Spencer 1118 Special

I picked up a pack of smaller open end wrenches. This one has 3/8 U.S.S. on one end and 3/8 OC on the other end. What are the letters for ? 9/16 and 11/16 or so.

    The Snap-On Effect

This was back a few years, I hadn't been pulling wrenches that long. My partner and I were buttoning up a leg on a bucket elevator. I was using a rough Gray Maple Leaf 9/16 combination, Maple Leafs were Grays economy line. My partner offered to let me try his Snap-On. I couldn't afford Snap-On...

    Armstrong Sockets

The local tool store had some on clearance sale priced. I guess that was when Armstrong was being shut down. I picked up a rail of both metric and SAE 3/8 drive. They reminded me of my old Craftsman, short, thin walled and deep broached, certainly not industrial quality. In fact I lost the 12 mm...

    1/2" Blue Point Combination

Tools have stories file. You won't ever get a photo of it. My parents gave me a '65 Simca 1000 in'69. It was to go to university with. The Simca was a cross between a Fiat 500 and a Corvair. In those days fuel pumps were on the sides of the engines, and this one was no different. It died and...

    Penens experts

I made a great haul today, at the fleamarket . A couple of the wrenches (12 or 13 of them)were the same as the Penens in the blog if you scroll down.http://progress-is-fine.blogspot.com/2013/04/we-used-to-make-things-in-this-country_13.html What year would they be ? I know Penens was part of...

    A Question about Tool History

Digging through a box of wrenches at the fleamarket there were many combination wrenches, but only a couple of double open ended, both Craftsman =V=, BTW. This got me questioning when did combinations become the common wrench ? I know Plomb invented the combination as we know it. When my Dad...

    3/8" impact sockets

Do any of you use 3/8" impact sockets on your air ratchets ? One of my 3/8 air ratchets is a Ingersoll Rand impact/air ratchet. They marketed it in the '90s.

    Durex wrench ?

When I google, wrenches is not what comes up most often, chuckle. On a pawn shop search I found a 5/8" combination. Has anyone ever heard of them? The wrench is nicely finished, well polished heads and the open end is hex. The body is Proto finished, thin like a Proto but a little narrower I...

    M.Klien & Sons

I recently picked up a 10" version of this https://www.ebay.ca/itm/VINTAGE-M-KLEIN-SONS-8-ADJUSTABLE-WRENCH-500-8-MADE-IN-THE-USA-/223557875224?oid=182304111551 I was wondering about the age. Wiki says pre '86 Klien adjustable wrenches were made in Japan. Yeah right. This ain't no Lobster, it's...
