HF has a 25% off coupon for the Icon 3/8 semi-deep sockets. I ended up grabbing a metric set today. I really could have used this past weekend for the strut tower nuts on my wife's car.

    Let's See Your Garage Dog

We just had another appointment this morning with a veterinary specialist for our spaniel/shepherd mix (brown and white dog). We've seen two specialists so far to get a couple of opinions. All signs seem to point to IMPA, or Rheumatoid arthritis for dogs. The next step is to have her sedated and...

How to remove concrete driveway staining?

Diluted muriatic acid works very well at brightening concrete. I used it for spot cleaning my driveway a couple of years ago when I moved into my house. It's bad for the environment, so I wouldn't suggest using it for large areas unless you can capture the runoff and dispose of it safely.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

I cleared off a wall in my workshop and got the spring compressor hung with the help of a couple of neighbors. Now I can replace the front struts on my wife's SUV this week. Bonus points for garage dog?

I brought this home today. Struts aren't something that I replace very often, but it's often enough that it was worth having.

    Let's See Your Garage Dog

Has anyone ever seen this before? The dog getting humped is a female. The dog doing the ******* is also female. I had to google it. Apparently it's a dominance thing.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

I put new front lower control arms on the '08 RL along with new inner and outer tie rods. Drained and filled the transmission, transfer case and rear diff. New front brake pads and the rears got new rotors and pads. For the wife's '09 Pilot, I installed the OEM harness for the trailer...

Lisle 37960 electrical disconnect pliers and new straight edge from Suburban Tool. I also picked up a cheap engine stand for an engine that I'm working on.

    Vessel Impacta Question

So about a year ago I picked up the #2 and the #3 Impacta screwdrivers. I used the #2 for the first time a couple of months ago to remove the strikers for the rear hatch on one of my cars. It took several good hits, but it did the job and I was able to remove the screws without too much trouble...

How often do you use 1/2" sockets/ratchets?

As a home DIY mechanic, I could probably get away with 3/8" 90% of the time. All of my ratchets are 90T or more, so I'll switch to a 1/2" if I start to feel like I'm wrenching on it too hard. I usually buy my tools from companies that have good warranties, but I also don't like to abuse my...

Difference between Gearwrench 81381 vs 81204P?

I have the standard length Tekton 3/8" drive flex head. It's been my go-to ratchet for the ~2 years that I've had it. The back drag is minimal and the flex mechanism is reasonably stiff, and it gives a satisfying "click" when moved between positions. I think Client Graphics tested it against...

    Let's See Your Garage Dog

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't looked into a specialist yet. So far we've only taken her to the local vet, who we do like. Although it does seem like a guessing game to me. I was worried about some of these medications, since they apparently can be hard on the dogs kidneys and liver. Dogs...

    Let's See Your Garage Dog

My wife texted me these old photos today. They were taken around this time last year. One of our dogs has been having trouble with her legs. I noticed her slowing down back in October, and the weeks leading up to Christmas she had suddenly gotten much worse. She looks like an old dog when...

First tool purchase in a while and first one for 2024. New hatchet, a dead blow hammer, Capri thin wrenches and the newer model GW locking flex head ratchet. I wanted to love the older 90T version, but that locking mechanism is pretty awful. At least it is on mine. The 120xp seems much better.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

I installed the Android Auto/Apple CarPlay head unit in my wife's car which I got her for Christmas. I forgot how much I hate installing radios in cars. A normal double DIN head unit apparently doesn't fit in her car, so I had to get one of these monstrosities. I had to tilt it towards the...

    AutoZone review.

I have an Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, Advanced Auto Parts and a Napa near me all within a 1/4 mile stretch of road. The Auto Zone is probably the oldest and roughest looking store, but I find their staff to be the most helpful, so I shop there the most. The Napa is pretty much closed on the weekends...

What's on your list to "upgrade" or "update" in the shop for 2024? And WHY?

This year I'd love to raise the roof of my garage ~4 feet to fit a full size lift. I had a couple of contractors look at it last year just to give me a sense of whether it's possible, while salvaging the existing roof. Now I have some money set aside for this project, so I'm going to have them...
