Got most of the framing scraps cleaned up this afternoon and starting in on some grading. I should be getting the roof on this weekend if it all works out.

Just read this from the beginning. Impressive build.

Thank you. It's been fun so far.... And a big learning experience. I am a welder by trade, trying my hand the past few years at some carpentry projects (with help). More projects waiting behind this one. Glad you liked the build, it's fun to share.

I got a whole bunch of free ground asphalt from a friend who works for a company that was repaving up the road from me. Can't beat that! I've been using the mini to get it spread around. Some of it is roughed in in front of the shop. My place is so Sandy and dusty that this should really help keep the dust down.

Krucks: great to hear you are doing ok physically after your fall cause not always the case as we get a bit older.

also good to see you have friends that have STUFF to keep improving your project and i bet that will really help a lot with the dust and even more when the rains come and you won't have to deal with the MUD.

keep taking and posting up more pictures as you have time or just take a ton of pictures and post them when the rains start or you get finished with your cool shop.

cheers and have a great weekend.

Krucks: are you siding with Hardie plank or metal or do tell? progress is looking good and if you want to take and post more pictures i know i won't mind and I'm sure others won't either if you have time to.

if you just get the tyvek or roofing paper up on the wood of the exterior of your garage it will be weathered in pretty good by winter. congrats!!

Thanks. The siding will be hardi board and batten on the walls and hardi lap in the gable ends. I have a couple material bids I'm working through right now, hopefully will be ordering next week.

Krucks: you might want to put up Tyvek or some other brand of protection on your cool garage before the rains hit cause as you know they are on their way soon. i just used roofing paper under my siding, but i live in a cement block house so the siding is really just cosmetic.

i'd loan you my hardie shear, but i gave it to my brother in law for helping me put up my new siding. if you are doing all the work pick up one and i had to pick up one it a day cause i had help on the way and didn't know i needed one so i spent maybe $275 for an off brand one that worked great. also get a diamond blade for maybe a hand 4.5 inch grinder and or a drill with some cement bits for any holes you might need to put in for electrical or vents.

also if you like any of the colors that Hardie plank offers it might be best buying it already primed and painted cause paint and doing the work isn't cheap or easy and the weather is such now you might have to wait until next spring or summer.

the last couple weeks (or months it seems like) i've been building a new cedar mailbox stand to replace the rotting one i built maybe 20+ years ago. it's almost done, but still have some work to do and thought i'd post up a picture while i'm showing you some siding ones.

good luck

Thanks for the great tips, I always welcome advice along the way. And that's a great looking project you have going there, nice work! I have material bids coming in from a couple places and will be ordering the siding material this week. I hope to have it sided and painted by November. I'd like to be working on doors and electrical over the late fall/winter. I also have a friend with a gutter business coming out to do one piece gutters once I get paint done so I'll be working to install my drainage and infiltration pit here soon. Slow and steadily seeing the light...I passed my framing inspection also, along with the shear wall so the whole structure is bought off which sure feels good! That's a milestone I've been striving for.

Krucks: keep posting up progress pictures and of course if you have questions just ask cause i'm far from the handiest guy here on GJ and the more pictures and stuff you put in your thread the more followers you might or should get.

good luck on NOVEMBER date and hope it doesn't start raining everyday again like last year when October came around and then finally stopped raining in May.

cheers

Ha! That's the truth. It gets pretty soggy around this time of year for sure. I don't mind working in the rain and other weather, it's the getting dark at 4-5 o clock that bums me out...

I was doing some burning and thought this was a good shot to show the layout a little bit.

Krucks: how's the old asphalt doing with all this rain? hopefully it's just compacting and not creating more of a mess. ALL GOOD??

sure post up more pictures like that if you have time cause it gives us a better perspective on your shop/garage/man cave.

cheers and hoping for a little more dry weather myself.

Asphalt is holding up pretty well, a little chunky since it's a rough grind but I like it as a base. Water is going through it good so far. I hope the dry weather holds up a little longer too since I'm working towards siding and paint right now. After that comes gutters and I-Pit. Then it can rain all it wants!

Kruks,

Would really like to stop by and see the shop and in particular infiltration pit going in. This is what I am working on now so we can meet Kitsap County plan requirements. Let me know and I can shoot you my number. Thanks.

Great looking shop. It shares quite a few similarities to a 40x60 build I'm in the middle of on Vancouver Island. Digging out so much material on the hill sure is a pain but the finished product is well worth it. Ive been facing the strict building requirements as well with shear walls and what not. I feel your pain! Keep up the nice work!

Thanks! Your build sounds interesting. Do you have a build thread going on here also? I'd love to check that out!

Siding materials get dropped off tomorrow, installation begins Monday. Had to stick my Ford inside for now, it's got a cracked roof skin and the rain showed up! I'll post some siding pictures soon. Hardi lap walls and hardi board and batten gable ends.

Hey drivesitfar,

Yes it is nice to get a few things covered, we had a pretty good snow flurry here too, and quite a bit of hail and rain recently so I love that I can get a few things out of that mess that before I couldn't! That siding should be done over the course of next week. It ought to look quite a bit different.

Siding is going up. Hardi lap walls and hardi board and batten gable ends. Very happy with it so far. The guy doing the siding is top notch.

Krucks: siding installed really makes your garage look a lot better and i hope the weather stays dry for a few more days, but the rain doesn't seem to slow down your siding expert.

can i ask what you are using for trim cause i just used cedar for my home's new hardie plank siding?

thanks for posting up pictures and if you have time take a lot more and post more cause some of us might want to do our own siding even if we don't have those cool scaffolding stands.

BTW is the siding guy working by himself or does he have a helper or two?

The siding company is High Ridge Construction, owner is Lowell Fritz. The first couple days he worked alone but he has a helper along now doing the cutting. I used cedar trim for the whole project also, except some of the facia (the white boards) because cedar was out of stock at the time. I just talked to him and he told me he's soaked. It's a rain or shine kind of business for sure. He does all construction, but he started out siding. Phenomenal work and very honest and professional, highly recommend.

This side got completed today. A couple small things to wrap up in the detail work on Monday, then the pump jacks get moved up front to get the front side lap siding installed.
