Painted a sample area with our chosen colors this morning. I think I'll need to paint a larger area to get a better idea, but I like it so far. We thought it might have a little too much contrast earlier but it's growing on me and I like that it's different than what you typically see with grey tones.

Krucks: i know it's your garage so your color, but if it was mine and i wanted to paint it shades of grey i might do the trim white instead of black.

your call cause you have to look at it.

the neighbors across the street from us bulldozed their little house and are building a nicer smallish house and they painted it grey with white trim and it looks pretty good. i'll take and post a few pictures if you'd like me to.

cheers and here's to a great 2018 and enjoy your new garage.

Yea we decided against the dark trim (I think). My wife spent some time at the paint store this afternoon and brought home a bunch of sample pieces to look over. We had an appointment at the garage door company the other day too and brought home some of their color samples too so we're going to try and put it all together here soon because I want to get these doors ordered up as soon as possible. They're 3-1/2 weeks out right now which isn't bad and I'm getting 40% off right now as well.

Just finished reading (OK skimming) through your build and wow what a great build awesome size and great attention to detail. Looking forward to the finished product as I'm sure you are too. Hope this winter is over soon I have lots of little things to finish up around my little shop when the weather breaks too.

Cheers Randy...

Thanks Randy, I'm glad you enjoyed looking over the build so far! It's been slow lately, we're trying to decide on paint colors before we can order doors. I'll also be able to paint facia and get gutters put on. Do you have a thread of your garage on here?

Krucks: our neighbors building a new home across the street from us are painting thier home grey like i mentioned with white trim and i took a picture for you so you could see if you like it.

whatever you pick if you like it works for me and just throwing out one i see everyday now that doesn't look too bad if you like grey.

cheers

Krucks: i actually saw another house in our neighborhood that is for sale (old house just painted) and the remodeler/flipper seller painted it grey with your black trim and it didn't look that bad.

have you made a decision yet?

maybe no hurry since the rain doesn't look like it's going to quit for an extended period of time now. i see it's not supposed to rain Saturday afternoon and maybe Sunday if you want to hurry out and paint though.

cheers and best of luck

We made a decision at the paint store tonight after a couple more hours of pulling samples. We're pretty happy with what we settled on. Now I can get my doors and openers ordered up!

Installation of doors and openers happens Feb 16th. I decided to go with Lift Master model 8500 jack shaft openers on the three 12x14 doors to give me the overhead clearance I'll need. Doors are Clopay premium series, 2" thick steel outer with intellicore polyurethane 18.4 R-value, long panel with windows. I went with Clopay Gold Bar lifetime commercial hardware on the whole package which gave me better ball bearing rollers, extended life cycle springs, and heavier duty hinges. My 9x8 door will be on a reduced radius track system so that it can roll up under future second floor joists that will be added later. For that reason, the jack shaft openers won't work apparently and that will be a conventional Lift Master chain drive opener, which should work fine in that area. I'll post detailed pictures of the mounting of the doors later.

Doors got installed today. Kitsap Garage Door out of Silverdale installed them. We went with grey and I really like the quality of the coating. The crew got it all done in one day start to finish, which was impressive to watch. All openers after installed and programmed with codes also. I still have a few small details to tend to with them but now I can close up the building and keep things secure. Down to electrical, drainage, and paint as the main items remaining. Aside from that and getting final inspection, I still have a lot of small retaining walls to do and tons of groundwork. Having a blast and continuing to learn lots!

Krucks: AWESOME and I'm betting you and your bride have really been looking forward to this day when the garage was sealed from the weather and the little critters. CONGRATS.

just an FYI i love KEYSTONE BLOCKS for small retaining walls and they used to sell them at Home depot maybe 10 or 15 years ago, but now you have to buy them elsewhere. i know of a place in Woodinville, but i'm hoping you have a place closer to you if you want to buy and use them.

these are not exactly the ones i used, but they are close and I had these pictures handy.

good luck and have a great weekend

Drives: thanks buddy, things are going pretty well so far. Good tip on the keystone blocks, I'll give that good consideration.

Krucks: the Keystone blocks i used had 2 white pins maybe made of cement or some hard substance that lock have kept my little 4 foot wall i showed you from moving for over 20 years now and a lot of STUFF has moved up and down that path behind it as you saw some of it.

if you can still buy that style each block weighed about 80-90 pounds and they will give you plenty of exercise.

good luck and your garage keeps looking better all the time!!

With the doors installed, I'm now looking into getting the electrical installed. I had a friend who is an electrician come out yesterday and give me some pointers, and he'll be helping me along the way. I've looked at quite a few different overhead lighting fixtures and working on a lighting plan. I posted a few pictures on the lighting forum and requested some feedback. If anyone has experience with high ceilings and has some fixtures they like, please let me know. I'm still browsing some of the lighting threads also, and that's been helpful.

Krucks: if you might have access to 3 phase lights for free or close to that cause i've even given away some there is a member that got some and he shows how to fix them to run on 110 power and he also shows off some AMAZING light bulbs that look as bright as the sun. here's his thread and i think the lights are near the beginning of it.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=368261

another member likes these that are pretty expensive and he says it's like working outside on a sunny day:

https://www.bigassfans.com/lights/t...&utm_medium=redirect&utm_campaign=hh_redirect

A lot of members just go get cheap LED 4 foot lights at Costco and use a lot of them if they need more light.

looking forward to seeing what you choose and how you like what you end up with.

good luck

Greetings Krucks.
I have a 30 x 60 shop with 14 foot high ceilings. I have three rows of fixtures that are 15 feet apart. I have a total of 18 8 foot 4 bulb tandem light fixtures that run the 60 foot span. My Wife and I went to Home Depot years ago and purchased all the Lithonia fixtures and put them up in a weekend. After about 12 years I started seeing the ballast fail and with in 18 months almost 3/4 of the fixtures were out.
I reviewed "The best ever light fixture ever" thread located in the (lighting Electrical forum). I tried shopping around to see what replacing the ballast would cost and found it would be cheaper to buy complete fixtures. After reading the thread I started looking at LEDs and decided to go that direction, I think it was $300 more for the LEDs than to replace the ballast/fixtures. I have white sheet metal on the upper walls and ceilings and the LEDs are much better than the old Florissant bulbs. I would highly recommend frosted LEDs. Lifespan 50,000 hours, brighter than Florissant, hope this helps

Krucks: as fast as you seem to get things done i bet your garage is already painted. or maybe the sun showing up again this coming week will give you the weather you've been looking for.

Thanks! I've been having fun with the project and spent a lot of time with friends and family along the way.

I think I'll just use the remote. They each come with a 3-button remote, so that will operate the three taller doors and I'll have to have a separate remote for the shorter door but I'm ok with that. The small door has a conventional chain drive opener since it has a reduced radius track; can't run jack shaft openers on those. I also have an outside wireless keypad that I can use if I'm just out in the yard. I should look more into that smartphone option and the battery backup they offer for these, just haven't put the time into that yet.

Hey friend!
Things have been bonkers lately, too many irons in the fire!
No paint yet but we should be set to get started next week (weather dependent) which may end up meaning July, who knows around here, nice right now but give it a minute. Supposed to be 80 on Thursday, and back to 50 on Friday. Spring is always a bad time of year to schedule paint. The house has to be dry to paint and the paint has to be dry before the dewpoint sets in so you have to be careful. We finally have our colors dialed in so we're looking good, going with Sherwin Williams "Duration" paint line.

I got my 320A meter base in today so I have to cut that in, trim and caulk it so that will be ready for paint too. Paint and electrical will be right on top of each other so that will be interesting. We'll see what happens first. I'm lucky to have family and friends helping me out on these items. I'm hiring these out but getting great guys and good prices. It's nice to know the people doing the work, ya know?

Krucks: sounds like you are progressing nicely and glad to hear you waited to paint until temps and conditions are better.

if you didn't like today's weather maybe 80 degrees and sunny tomorrow will make you feel even better.

cheers

Sharp looking shop !!

I've been looking at those same lights from the same place. Have you gotten them installed yet ?? Either way, I'd love to know what you think of them. I'd be putting a dozen in one of our farm machine sheds and they look pretty sweet.

No I haven't installed them yet. I'm pushing forward with paint next week if weather cooperates, and I may get started on wiring but I'm a little ways off from having feedback on the lights. I'll surely get some pictures posted though and provide some thoughts on them. I'm definitely excited about them too, I did a ton of research and these seem to be a good unit and come at a decent price.

So I'm here in Kitsap county scheming a plan for a two level 40x60 backed into a bank and I stumble upon a forum called garagejounal.com and I find this build thread. Awesome information so far. Thanks so much for sharing. I hoping with drivesitfar that you were able to take advantage of the weather this week and get painted.... though it's actually raining right now.

Guessing I'm not too far from you. I'm off of Wildwood not too far from the Port Orchard Airport. I'll be following along as you finish up the inside.

Welcome to the group! I'm glad you like the build and hope that it will be useful for your project in some way. Yes we'll get paint started, doing some priming tomorrow, touch up caulking and making. It looks like rain is called out for the middle of the week so we'll see how the painting process goes. Good to see some local folks on the forum, small world sometimes!

The shop finally has some color, and my buddy started in on the wiring this week. Should be out of the wiring phase mid next week. I got the power ditch dug in this last weekend, and will be laying conduit this weekend. After electrical and the inspection for that, I'll be getting back after the gutter drainage and getting my infiltration pit installed. That will have a county inspection then it's on to getting everything back filled and requesting final inspection. Getting close to the end now. Then it's retaining walls, grading, and landscape......

Hey buddy! Thanks!

That fire pit is from a rock quarry, it's from a machine called a cone crusher. There's a bowl and mantle that are similar and depending on the machine it came from determines the size. I've got another one I use as a planter out by my gate, and one that's much larger for bigger fires. I love them, they heat up nice after the fire burns a while and really throw out some heat.

I'd definitely be interested to see what you have available in the way of storage racks and toolboxes. I wonder, can you shoot me some text message photos of what's available?

Good to hear from ya!

Thanks!

Overhead lights are all hanging. 1'X2', 14k lumen. I'm hoping the amount of lighting turns out how I calculated.... Everything is looking really nice so far!

Yes I got the painting done. Love the color!

Electrician is supposed to be back out this week to finish up on the electrical. I'm hoping to be done with that by the end of the week.
