The lady I bought from said NASA dropped a piece of equipment on a skid to be painted and left the casters when they picked up.
Her husband had a paint shop.

OK- my disclaimer, the below will contain disturbing “it‘s a southern thing” photos….🤣🤣🤣

So, Chris enabled my *** on Friday to this neat lift table. What really caught my attention was the acme screw mechanisms, as I’m gearing up to build a welding table and for once I want to be able to level the table so I can use a level for any work I’m doing on it.

Of course I’m at work and the seller is a little bit further than I sneak away to during the day, so I set a time for after work.

Here‘s what I picked up.

The thing actually worked and lifted up/down with no real issues! Looking At the CL pics, the heavy rust left some doubts to the soundness of the frame, but I was after the lift mechanism and the casters would of just been a bonus to me🙄. But now that I seen it works and rolls like a champ, I don’t really have the heart to cut apart, and the acme rods are a little small for the table build. After pulling some of the rust off, it seems to be pretty sound.

So, Shorty put dibs on if I didn’t want and that’s where it’s going, soon as he pays up and gets me that 12 pack of beer for picking up, and I figured things that might collapse are suited for him.😳🤣🤣

The table has a neat set up using roller chain, sprockets and pinion gears.

The sprockets are the nut for the acme bolts.

I heard that urine is supposed to be a good rust remover so I did a little test spot for Shorty!

Damn thing has already started collecting stuff.

I went to a appointment only pick close to me on Saturday, a favorite thing for me! It was a granddaughter selling her grandpas shop off for her grandmother.

It was interesting hearing about the airboats, buggy’s and such that he built. There was a lifetime accumulation for sure.

The sad part was the shop roof had failed badly and everything inside was pretty much affected by water and moisture. There was a lot of good old tools that had been put in buckets and many were full of water.😥

I managed to put together a pile, largely misc boxes of stainless bolts.

There was a lot of steel outside, aluminum and some galvanized.

She was pretty high on the pile, so I walked away from most of it, bought the galvanized pieces, an aluminum comalong and a bucket of stainless bolts/nuts. I live in the south, so virtually everything I use outside is galvanized and stainless fasteners.

Heres the galvanized channel and some angles. I’m going to cut up and make stands for my outside stock pile.04D9CA42-7497-454E-B8E9-60158254F7D2.jpeg

The channels are formed 3/8” plate, the two pieces were spliced using stainless rivets.

Bucket of bolts.

I had to go home and get the trailer, after we loaded the steel, we negotiated on the original pile and I left with it.

I always thoroughly enjoy these type of picks, not everyone will dig into stuff , get dirty and move things around to find the treasures.

Its generally good conversation about the PO and the family is thrilled to see stuff go.

Isn't Miller piss BEFORE you drink it?
I’ll never will drink Miller high life again, never!

This is a shop related story of my youth.

When I’m my teens, parents went to the other coast for a adults weekend.

I begged them to get my grandma to come stay at our house to watch me and my brother.

She did.

Setting- Dad built a 28’x44’ detached garage behind the house for his business, but outgrew it

Dad left a couple 6 packs in the garage, saying my buddy and I could have a few after we cleaned up the yard.

I called John, told about the beer.
Forgot to tell him about the yard work.

Then two of the neighbor boys showed up with another two 6 packs.

Then I went down to the corner store to get some more! ( never been carded in my life)

We proceeded to wipe out that beer, getting sick, puking in the trash cans when we heard a knock on the door!😳 ****!

It was grandma, with the boys mom, telling her “oh there out here playing in the garage” and the door opens.

My poor grandma about died, ran in the house and called mom, the boys mom (very religious) was calling me the devil, forcing beer on her boys ( remember, they showed up with beer, I never called them)

Then I had to go in the house to talk to my parents on the phone, my mom hysterical , my dad laughing ( you know he didn’t get any) they stayed the rest of the weekend, my grandmother had me on a leach the rest of it.

Anyway, I’ll agree that beer is pissey evil and haven’t touched since.
Edit- The above applies to Miller. Have touched much other beer since🍻🍻

In other doings, finally mounted a latch for the horse stall gate. Of course the latch plate that comes with it wouldn’t work with the gate setup in the barn, and it would have stuck out a little, and we try to keeps openings as smooth as we can do the horse don’t get banged up walking past.

I decided to make a flush strike plate in what would be the jamb of the opening.

I used some 3/16” thick x2” stainless flat bar.
I bent into a angle close to the angle in the supplied latch. I used part of my dies from the Swag off road brake kit for small presses.

Almost finished.

In place and latched.

The bolt on the latch rides on the angle much like a regular door latch would.

The u bolts will get trimmed and acorn nuts on them.

Now the wife won’t have to tie a rope on gate every time she goes in there.

Edit: I used tapcons until I get some 1/4” stainless screws.

Just a bunch of odds and ends going on, family to go see, etc.

Our daughter is staying with us and is fixing to go on a long road trip to CO.
Saturday she had a flat just around the corner from the house, I went
to change.
She had the jack and spare all out ready to go. Using the tire iron, it was almost all of me to get lugs broke loose, granted the iron was a little on the short side. No way would she of been able to do.

The jack and the hook end of the handle was kinda wonky also. So I figured I’d get a long breaker bar and a socket for her to keep in car.

Was thinking of getting a hydraulic jack, but wasn’t completely sold on that. Talking with my son, he’s suggested a mod to the jack so a regular ratchet could be used. I’m glad all of my teaching him years ago was stored so he could feed it back to me!

We talked of welding a socket or a bolt to jack, but I thought it over and decided I wanted the jack to be used as intended in case ratchet was lost or whatever.

So here is my ratchet adapter kit to use a 1/2 drive on the jack.

I drilled through a 15/16” socket, bolted through the ring on the jack. There’s some slope on the connection, but I used a 1/2” drive swivel in case any angle was needed. Finished off with a extension and ratchet.
Had daughter come out to make sure she could operate it to lift car, worked fine.
I used a nylon lock washer to attach the socket, I included two 1/2” wrenches in case it needed to be remove to allow the regular handle to be used for whatever reason.

Packed up in a zip lock.

Drilling the socket was harder than I expected.

Now just need to get a long breaker and a 21mm socket and she’s ready to go.
