Re: Garage Refurb

Hi NUTT,
I have been watching your ongoing projects for the last couple of years. Great job, with lots of helpful info.

I made a toy box for my son when he was born. I also built the crib just before he was born. Now it is his sisters. Wish I had more time for this kind of stuff.

Thanks for posting, Kip

Nice work - and your shop sure looks cozy now!
It generally is nice and cozy out there. It was last night until I found a section of stove pipe that had some severe rust damage. I had to run to town to get a section to replace it. I had an "oh ****" moment when I found it.

Thanks. I wish I could have made more stuff starting years ago.

Re: Garage Refurb

Been reading this whole thread over a few days. Amazing work start to finish! Worries me though that I didn't see much work on the Mustang... Does working on having a nice garage mean I won't have any time to play with may cars any more?? :p Really nice work, start to finish.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Eric, when you showed you Xmas gifts last month, one
Was a magnifying lamp. Have you used it yet? How do you like it. I am getting to the point I need some more light and "higher definition"' when working on small parts

I know there are some threads about these on GJ but wondering on what you have to say with a current model

Thanks in advance

The Mustang basically got put on the back burner as "life" was happening around it, daughters graduating, working on the house, refurb on the garage on a seriously tight budget, and just many other things..

I have the majority of the stuff to build a new motor for it but had a transmission issue. I made the call yesterday to G-Force transmissions to have them get it opened up and see what's wrong with it. Hopefully, there won't be any major issues, $$$$, and I can maybe get back on it this year. I do have to watch what I do though, we have a daughter getting married this fall.

I eyeballed it a for a few years but never bought one. When my buddies wife mentioned not knowing what to get him for his B-day, I made the suggestion to her to buy it. I've used his a few times before I got mine. I have used mine once or twice. It's something you don't use all the time but when you need it, it's nice to have.

The wife bought mine, same as my buddy's, at Hobby Lobby for about $40. If you look online (if you have one local) they almost always have a 40% off coupon. Well worth the price to me, especially if you're trying to dig a splinter out of your hand.

No worries, I know how that happens, just having a little dig. Good to hear that stuff is going on in the background and you might be able to put it back together in the not-too-distant future. I was impressed by the split block pictures you posted a link to at some point through the thread, it was certainly a good effort! Love the work restoring the house and old garage into what looks like a great and very pleasant usable space. Well done.

Thank you for the compliments.

The transmission issues that I'm having are collateral damage of that split block. It's hard for things not to get damaged when they come to an abrupt stop at 6800 rpm. :spit:

Re: Garage Refurb

Next up, another project, this is a shelving unit for the wife's office at work.

It's laying face down as I ran out of time and had to work on the daughter's car. I'm going to try to use my Kreg jig for the first time on it.

A little progress on the shelving unit today. The main body of it is done. I'm working to trim it out right now, as you can see the top trim pieces laying on the front. It's laying on it's back.

Hey Eric - Been a while since I stopped in. Shop is looking good and glad to hear you're getting more time to spend on projects IN the shop instead of ON the shop. Very nice work on the toybox...How'd the grandaughter like it? Great score on the cabinets too...you really worked them in nicely. I am glad you got that oddball handle painted though! Keep up the great work!

Thanks Chris, I was thinking the other day that I need to stop into your thread. It seems that the granddaughter was having fun just sitting on the toybox the other day.

Re: Garage Refurb

I'm to the finish stage now. I have some holes to fill and sand the entire unit. Then it'll be some staining and polycrylic time.

If you notice the hole in the upper left side back, that is for some possible cords or cables that might be going through the shelving unit. This is going to sit at the end of her desk to hold CCW paperwork. Currently, there is a copier/printer/scanner sitting in the corner, this will allow it to move out farther and help manage the cords.

Eric, just finished reading the entire thread. Very nice work. I have a question about the toybox, did you have plans, or just sketch and build. I want to build something similar for my daughter. Again, thank you for your attention to detail and especially documenting everything as well as you have.

Thanks for the compliments presto. The tool box was basically a sketch and build as I went. I figured the approximent size to get it out of one sheet of plywood.

Re: Garage Refurb

Was there a reason you chose it over drywall

Yes, I personally feel it is more rugged for drywall, especially in a garage/shop setting. Using OSB, you don't have to finish it like drywall and you can hang stuff (within reason) where ever and don't have to look for a stud.

Do it! The Kreg kit is awesome! makes joinery so easy. Get the clamp kit. Not the cheapest of the cheap. You will love it and you will be encouraged to do many new projects.

It is nice. It might be a little chunk of change to spend but I figure I can use it for the next 30 years.

I went ahead and bought the master kit (or whatever they call it) since I had the gift cards to use. If you can hold for the next time Menard's offer the 14% bag sale and the 11% sale together, you'd save a nice chunk on it. If not, the set will easily fit in the bag.

Re: Garage Refurb

I put a second coat of stain on the wife's shelving unit this morning. I was hoping to later on today to put a coat of polycrylic on it and maybe a second coat this evening.

Surprisingly, I read the directions ( :wtf: ) and it said to wait 24 hours before applying polycrylic. ****, now it's going to be Sunday before I can spray it. :(

Re: Garage Refurb

Since I couldn't shoot some polycrylic on the shelving unit, I decided to horse around in the garage. I came up with this little shelf.

I have my spring clamps on it and also a place to the Kreg jig clamps. The shelf allows a space for misc stuff and a made a holder for my nail sets.

I did have to rearrange a few things on my pegboard though, as I believe this stuff is ever evolving.

Thank you for the compliments. American dream, more like living the typical hardworking American life along with all of life's typical **** that comes along with it.

I try to learn and put to use what I have learned at making an attempt to do it myself. There's no way I'm going to pay somebody to do something that I can do myself.

Welcome to GJ, you'll find many other members here that have the same work ethic, enjoy putting to use what they have learned and have had great outcomes.

Re: Garage Refurb

They look good Eric. How did you like drilling with the new jigs?

I liked it and it does work good. The only issue I had was I had already cut the dados in the wood and it's not really set up to do that, I believe. I just practiced on some scrap pieces to make sure of the depth and screw sizes.

Re: Garage Refurb

Good morning everybody, I hope that your day is going better than mine so far. I put the last coat of polycrylic on the wife's shelving unit last night. I tried to hit it slightly heavy on top. Not heavy enough to puddle or create a run but to provide some good protection for the future office abuse.

So as I check the fire and get it stoked back up, I checked on it. I thought there is no way I laid it on that heavy that it created a white spot and was still wet.

Notice the whiteish area on the front ? There's also a spot on the back edge that looks milky like undried polycrylic.

Re: Garage Refurb

I looked up and thought no way I got water through the register vent I had put in a few years back. I was wront, all this fine snow and blowing, it bit me in the ***. This is what I found in the attic.

In this picture, you can see the vent, the snow and register. My dumb freaking luck. A few inches one way or another and it would missed the shelf.

I walked into the house, grabbed the camera and the wife asked what was wrong. I just told her to come out to the garage. Shes's okay with it but I'm not. I'm going to have to see what I can do with it. :(

Well that just *****, I think a light sanding and re apply and you should be good to go.

That's what I am hoping. Then again, the wife said it was fine, I'm tempted to just take it into her office at work. I'll just have to see what happens once I start back on it. :dunno:

Re: Garage Refurb

so how the snow get in?

This is the vent it came in.

The last few days, it's been blowing and the snow has been very fine, like dust. Believe it or not, it can work it's way in. I was just amazed at how much came in. The other two vents on this roof are covered (with snow) and this one is exposed to more wind from the west. If you noticed the news the other day (Saturday), I believe we were the only county under a Level 3 snow emergency.

What model of Kreg jig did you get? I have casually looked and watched the Kreg videos but unsure of what model they are using. I saw the jigs and a clamp to hold the sides/top/ bottom for assembly.

Thanks in advance
