Just purchased this from a local gentleman. Not as awesome as a lot of these in this thread, but it's my first and I love it!

...

if i remember correctly they now make huge machines for big factories, but not 100% on that. what i do remember is that i bought it from the estate of a very handy guy that probably bought it new and had several other quality tools.

That's correct. I used to work at a bearing plant and we had several Cincinnati machines. Some grinders about the age of the one you sold that would still hold tolerances ground to the tenths (ten thousandths of an inch).

Here's mine, I bought this Tauco grinder bout 50 yrs. ago from a surplus store in downtown Detroit. I was told at the time that it was made for England during ww2 to power up their bombed out factories. The odd thing is it is for 120V DC!!! I made a rectifier for it, & it's been running fine all those years. It also came w/ a very nice drill grinding attatchment, a wide slotted tool rest, & a diamond wheel dresser. They had 2 of them at the time, & I could kick my *** for not buying the other.I don't remember if I paid $25 or $50 at the time.
Cheers

Nice grinder Joe. IIRC Tauco was Delta's name for overseas units for a while. As for the DC voltage it was probably designed to run off generator power for the military.

Here is my circa 1975 Cummins.

I was probably about 10-11 years old, and living in SE Alaska.

A traveling tool sales guy set up shop in a hotel room.

I went with my dad, and this is what he bought.

As a kid, I removed the shields and promptly lost them. Dad wasn't too happy about that. I do have the side covers and rest. Somewhere.

Any info on this unit would be much appreciated.

Wow that's a nice bit of kit mate with some cool history.
I agree! :D

But, ... please tell this Yank what 'bit of kit' means. I understand it refers to the total collection of parts, like in 'kit and caboodle'.

Webster's on-line doesn't really come close to what I think it means in this context.

Thanks.

That nice Craftsman bench grinder will be very at home in the following GJ threads, also.

Riven: Cummins isn't a high quality grinder and yours probably was made in Taiwan. I had one i picked up with a workbench last year and sold it for $30 and the buyer loves it so it probably will serve you well until you find a Craftsman block or Baldor or other old US made one.

it looks like it's missing tool rests but you won't need one for the buffer so maybe put a wire wheel on the right side. also missing shields so get yourself a good face shield.

I scored a big 1 hp a while back for 50 but still have some ole pos with a 6 inch for roughing a drill bit and a wire on the other side for the occasional bolt. I don't use it much, I am super profficient with hand held for most stuff, got 20 grinders with different wheels.
I can still twirl a 1/4 bit around in a 4 1/2 grinder about as good as I can the right way and use a drill doctor here and there to keep things straight. What you all grind with these things?

This is how I found mine.
The 6" grinding wheel has lead in it's center.
Not sure how old it is.

And this is how it looks now.
I really like how well it's made.
I think it's made in Italy.

All new bearings.
Most screws and bolts are replaced by stainless.

The on-off switch is interesting.
Just like the key of a car.
O = off
M = on
A = start (and automaticly returns to M when released)

Here's mine:

Baldor Model 8107W 8" (grey)

Baldor Model 57422 10" on pedestal (blue)

Once you use one of these grinders nothing else really compares

Gravel: those are a nice pair of Baldor grinders and they almost look new. i also like the Baldor stand on your 10 inch grinder. when you start using them and creating all sorts of dust you might want to install a simple dust and debris system like Ainsley has done for his. here's the link to his garage thread and i'm hoping to set up something similar to keep the shop and my lungs a little cleaner.

Nah, you should scrap those pieces of junk and get a craftsman block grinder.

:lol_hitti

O and BTW, Baldors are just a stepping stone into real industrial bench grinders. Go use a Queen City, Cincinnati or the like and your eyes will be opened.

I got this one at an estate sale for $15.00 with a pair of Vise-Grips.

I tore it down to change the brushes and check the bearings but it didn't have brushes and the bearings don't have balls.

(I may have found Jimmy Hoffa.)

The motor is pretty old. it's from around the 1920's

I'm still trying to figure out what brand the arbor is.

Thanks for the upper and reply!!!

The logo is pretty far gone and someone was telling me that they think it is an older Wissota or something like that. I'll try and crop the pic and get a closer shot of the logo to repost.

Will do. I usually get pretty good ideas for my own projects when I look through the pics!

I'm looking to get a new bench grinder. What does everyone recommend. Seems like Baldor or the older Craftsman ones are favored.

Wow Flint - that's a fantastic restoration of that old beauty!

I found an old beast of a base on CL. Didn't care for the grinder, but maybe it will turn out to be a good grinder. The base alone was worth the price to me - $70
