Bosch 6-inch (by Wissota)

Was looking for a small buffer/polisher and came across this Bosch grinder for $20. It was missing the eyeshields and one wheel guard cover, but I didn't really need those for my use. I repainted it as close to original as could find, and replaced the bottom plate & feet.

This grinder was clearly made by Wissota, and as expected it runs silky smooth. Exactly what I needed to spin a Scotchbrite wheel and a light buffer.

Looks good. You might have your scotchbrite on backwards.

Old Black & Decker bench grinder - I am guessing 40s or 50s vintage? Quiet as a church mouse.

Picked up an older Walker & Turner grinder/sander. I don't really see too much info on them.

Here's a big old Cincinnati 2hp. single phase grinder that I bid on at an auction about a month ago. I stopped at 50$. Hammer went down at $140. The little metal strip in front of the left wheel is my 6" pocket scale.

Here’s my 2 HP Baldor polisher with the pedestal I built.

I later added “wings” so that it could be moved with a pallet jack.

Here’s an old Black and Decker 1hp grinder I picked up this morning. It’s not as whisper quiet as my newer grinder made by dewalt, so I was wondering if there is anything I can do to smooth it out? Does anyone know of a good bench grinder restoration thread?

Grinder Restore

I revived a 3/4 HP grinder. It was one of those deals I shouldn’t have bought but after getting up at 5:30am, driving 10 miles to the swap meet and circling all the tables for 2 1/2 times and still being empty handed I pulled the trigger on this for $20 just so I had something to go home with.

attachment.php

Once home I discovered the bearings were fried. It had been stored where water got to it and had rust and more growing inside.

attachment.php

I put it on the lathe to help remove some light rust off the shaft and noticed how out of proportion the stator was. I thought the shaft was bent at first but a dial indicator revealed all bearing and wheel areas were true, it was just the shaft near the rotor and the rotor itself that were disproportionate. (definitely not a baldor) I turned the rotor down as I figured it had to be badly out of balance. I just used rattle can paint I had available to paint it and buffed the rough aluminum. It runs smooth but surges at top speed until there is even a slight load when it runs excellently.

This 1986 Taiwan grinder is no prize but it runs well so I’ve set it up for sharpening by making a track based jig for it.

jonhdw,
I restored an old one of similar age and the bearings were quite noisy.
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7093050#post7093050
I replaced them with sealed bearings and trued the grinding wheels with a diamond to get them closer in balance and now it is very quiet.

It looks like grease fittings---and probably sleeve bearings---on jonhdw's grinder. They could be worn out by now, and much harder to replace. And the arbor shafts could be all worn out as well

Thanks guys, I tore it apart and the bearings were shot. The rest of the parts look fantastic. I ordered some sealed bearings and will get them installed shortly. I’ll post some pics with the restoration is compete.

So you had grease fittings AND ball bearings? That must have been a helluva grinder in its day. How will that work with sealed bearings?

Sears-Craftsman 1/3 HP Bench Grinder 397-19410 on pedestal. Old and crusty. My wife's grandfather's grinder that she inherited. Been sitting unused in the garage for more than 10 years. Never cleaned it or done anything else to it. Cleaning out the garage and need to get rid of it. Plugged it in for the first time since it went into the garage and ... it started right up and purrs like a kitten. Trying to find out what something like this is worth.

It was originally designed to use greased bearings, but I just ordered sealed bearings that are the same size to replace them. They work great! I also removed the grease fittings since there is no longer a need to use those anymore.

I just completed my restoration of my Black and Decker 10" Ball Bearing Bench Grinder. It came out awesome!

But I do need some help from the grinder experts on this forum. The capacitor that came with the grinder was about 55uf, which is WAY too small for a start capacitor, so I put in a 550uf cap since it's a 1hp grinder. Once I got it all back together, it starts up a little rough. It seems to struggle to start for a second or two. I contacted a member of a different board and he also used a 55uf cap in his grinder and says it works fine. 55uf would imply it is a run capacitor, but it has a centrifugal switch so I figured it was a start capacitor that someone had replaced with the wrong value over the years.

So my question is, does my grinder have a "start" capacitor or a "run" capacitor?

Please help!!

Thanks!

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing. My only concern is, the grinder came with a much lower value capacitor, and another member has the same model with the same low value capacitor. According to all sources I found online, a 1hp motor needs ~550uf to start.

Is it possible to have a run capacitor and no start capacitor? Just a start winding or something?

A grinder doesn't require a huge amount of starting torque, so a smaller capacitor could esily have been engineered into the design. Plus, the in-rush current would be lower which could otherwise be an issue with a 1hp motor.

The guys/gals in the "let's see your craftsman block grinders" thread would love to see your Craftsman 'Block' grinder and cast iron stand.

BTW - nice find, what HP and model number is it?

I’ll check on that info when I go out this morning. I wanted a grinder with a stand and this one is in really nice shape, the stand even has the rubber feet intact. The only thing I need to do with it is square up the grinding wheel.

Edit: it’s a 1/2 hp model#397.21147

I was able to utilize my dad to buy this pristine 1/2hp setup (local to him, 4hrs from me). Bought it from the original owner who stated it had maybe been used 4-5 times.

I really want to get some eye shields that have the metal frame around them, and I'm sure torqueman2002 has some nice examples that would really finish this setup off!

3 phase B & D 10" ginder

I traded some future welding work for this big old grinder... I'm just starting to take it apart and clean it up. Not sure if I'll stick with the grey or paint it some other color(s).

I don't have 3 phase, or a phase converter or vfd, so I won't be able to run until I figure that out.

I intend to post pictures as I go, and I rarely remember to do that. I will attempt to post some pictures along the way.

I love the lights! Can't wait to see how they look lit up...

I picked up this baldor 8100 that was taken out of service due to the wires fraying. You can see it by the eye shield in the first picture. A little cleaning and some paint it really came out nice. I cant tell the vintage on it though. The eye shields and power switch are different than what an image search comes up with. I upgaded the lights to L.E.D.'s and its an amazing difference!

I finished up a refurb on an 8" Baldor grinder and wanted to say thanks to the person that recommended the PlastiKote T-10 General Purpose Machinery Gray spray paint. Sorry, but I cannot find the post or person where I read about this paint. It is a really nice darker grey with some blue in it. The paint dried overnight and it is very tough already, really dried hard. I will be using this for more future projects. Downside is the only place I found it is on Amazon at $18 a can...

As part of the grinder refurb I needed new rubber feet or bumpers. Baldor wanted $5 each! The only one's I could find close to the size I needed I had to purchase a large quantity. I am selling the extrar feet in the classified's if anyone is looking for a nice rubber bumper of foot for a grinder. https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=415194
