Qty. 92 Lamps: $5.60 ea.
SYLVANIA FO28/841/XP/XL/SS/ECO3, Item No. 22167
84,000 hr. lamp life when used with Program Rapid Start Ballast
Spec Sheet: https://assets.sylvania.com/assets/Documents/FL083R5.00f41d36-53cd-4480-a4f4-c309fdc0e382.pdf

2 wiring diagram options.
Option 1 uses more connectors.
Option 2 uses some wire connection holes from lampholders.

Strip all wires between 3/8" to 1/2".

All wire connections should have slack.
A few extra inches of wire is good.
Coiling lots of extra wire into the fixture is bad = more RFI.

Nice posts! You are a great help I like the computer modeling.

One of the indoor dog training places I go has the 6 bulb High Bay T5 fixtures and they put out a lot of light, what do you think of them? I'm looking at plans for my 50x70 16" eve shop. Will do repairs on my cars, storage will have a lift. Three 14' wide roll ups two on front with an entrance door in the middle and one roll up at the rear on the left.

And I like that 62 Impala there have a 64 getting a 409 that will be in my shop.

I'd love for you to have a look at mine if you can. I put up some recessed lighting and I'm completely unhappy with it. Ready to pull it all back out and start over.

The larger bay area (40x20 with 14' high door) could probably be lit around the walls, some hanging from the 2nd floor that's been built and some hanging on the wall at the same height (~ 10' high).

Here's my photos and layouts. I don't need the area "upstairs" lit, as it will be an apartment and storage at a later time.

If a reasonably priced fixture is available that can fit flush / recessed into the ceiling joists that would be wonderful. They are 19" on center.

Platonic, let me know if these suffice. I don't have an interior sketch at the moment, I'll get working on one. The boxes in the overhead view are the locations for the car lift pads.

Since I’ve spent a fair amount of time doing Light Fixture Layouts for GJ members, I figured I'd put them all in one thread as a general reference guide. I’ll start with the latest and add more as time permits.

All Isoplots in footcandles and done at 30" workplane height (30" from the floor).

Thx for doing this. Appreciate it.

Could I get a lighting recommendation for my 80’x 50’x 16’ shop?

Shop is a gable clear span with white insulation on walls and roof. Concrete floor left as is. The 12x12 and both 20x14 doors are sectional overhead that hug the 2:12 roof pitch. Shop use is machine work, sheet metal/hotrod fabrication/welding and I hate shadows. Above the office and storage rooms is used for more storage. No sky lights or windows in shop area.

Wow, there's some great stuff in this thread.

I'm working on a garage remodel similar to the one in post #15 above. The garage (detached building) is 19'3" by 19'8" with ~8' ceilings. The one catch is it has a center beam which prevents all of the layouts suggested by Platonic Solid.

Based on looking at a few of these layouts, I know I need shielded fixtures due to the low ceiling. I mocked up what Lithonia SB232 fixtures would look like when evenly spaced out. There is no workbench currently, but if I built one it would be next to the door on the far wall.

A couple of questions:

1. Should I center the lighting in the entire space, as shown? Or should I center the lights in each bay? Or something else? (I do have the garage door tracks to contend with, but I intend to use a jackscrew opener so there will be no center track.) I'm just guessing at the layout here as I don't have the ability to draw the cool footcandle plots above.

2. If I go with the specified fixture, I take it I should stick with the current ballasts until they wear out. Any bulb recs?

Thanks!

Shivatron, please define intended use. If I assume 2 midsize cars, there's not much space left for anything else. Put a workbench in there and that bay will only be usable for a compact car.

Correct, two cars is the intended use. There will never be much of a workbench there, though one car is very compact (Miata) so I do have a bit of room in the right bay (when viewed from the garage door).

Sure, please provide exterior workshop wall dimensions, garage door width and type. Lift location dimensions would be useful too.

I finally got back up there. Thanks so much!

Added more dimensions to the drawing from page 1, garage doors are roll up.

The ceiling will be 15 feet to the sheetrock and I'd like to use T5HO if possible to reduce the amount I need.

CAD Drawing rotated as I didn't have exact width of stairs.
6" deducted per exterior wall for interior dimensions.

Replying to myself here, a friend pointed out that because the walls reflect light, the fixtures should be more centered in each bay. Looking at the layouts here, that seems to be right. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is right/wrong?

The layouts here are intended to provide good general illumination with or without a vehicle in the bay. Notice the fixtures are placed around the perimeter of the room and the vehicle where you need them when working it. You don't want your only fixtures centered above the vehicle if you want to be able to see anything. With the size limitation of your garage, I have a hard time imagining it being used for anything other that basic car storage unless you're going to sacrifice a bay for a workshop area.

Gotcha -- thanks! I agree on the size, maybe I should be clear when I say "workbench", it's more like "shelf to put things down". I'll move the lighting to the perimeter in my sketch as you suggest.

Suggested Fixtures and Lamps:

Qty. 37 Lithonia TZR 2 54T5HO MVOLT 1/4 GEB10PS
or Cooper Metalux 8TSSF-254-UNV-EBT1 or 8TSNF-254-UNV-EBT1.
HD's $70 price tag for the Lithonia is hard to beat. Might want to open one and see what brand ballast is in there before buying 37 of them. I see HD sells what appears to be the exact same fixture without the "R" designation (I assume that means residential), thus TZ 2 54T5HO MVOLT 1/4 GEB10PS for $100.

Qty. 148 Sylvania 20949 F54T5HO 5000K $4.68 ea.
The 30,000 hr. life on the site is wrong. The most current Sylvania spec sheet (linked) says 40-45,000 hrs.
I linked to this bulb on a prior layout at $3.80 ea. from 1000bulbs dot com, but that may have been an error on their part as they now don't carry it at all.

gt1guy provided a complete build drawing package which made it easy to get carried away with detail.

fc = 90-100 on all workbenches and surface plate.

I just bought a house that has a 28 x 28 attached garage w/ 10' ceilings.

Going to be insulating and putting up dry wall on the side walls and want to upgrade the lighting. Right now only has one row of lights across the middle.

I think I can modify your 24 x 28 layout for my use....good stuff.

Question, I don't see any LED recommendations? Do you have any LED fixtures / bulbs that you recommend?

Something like the below?

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lithonia...ng-White-LED-Wraparound-Light-LBL-4/203839057

Or a cheaper version from amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UTX4HJS/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Thanks for any feedback..

Tony

The Lithonia LBL4 LED yields 14% less output compared to Lithonia SB232 Fluorescent when placed in the 24x28x8 layout (posts 14 & 15). Average illuminance in upper left room (of post 15) using SB232 = 91fc, using LBL4 = 78fc. 78fc is certainly enough for most applications. Lights of America doesn't provide IES files so there's no way to know what their output is. I would not assume it is equal to the Lithonia LBL4.

Was searching for light recommendations and came across this thread. Appreciate any input. Shop will be 24W x 34D and will be used for general automotive work and maybe some paint and body down the road.

Flat ceiling that are 12' with a tray at 13' 6" to allow for the lift posts. 2 post Bendpak 10A-LP.

Bottom half of walls will be light grey and top half white, ceiling also white.

I had spaced out 12 4' fixtures and planned to run them on 2 separate switches lighting every other light (1,3,5,7,9,11 on one and 2,4,6,8,10,12 on the other).

I was thinking of doing 4 lamp T8 fixtures with wrap diffusers but wonder if 4 lamps is overkill. Difference in price vs. 2 lamp is only about $300 total for the components.

Layout Request:

Any chance I could get some help with a layout? I'm working on and restoring cars and would love some good light. I have 15 feet to the top of the ceilings. It will be finished drywall with the common white ceilings and walls down to about a 4 foot grey section at the bottom of the walls.

The 4 post lift in the front is mainly for storage and any work I do over there will be under the car. I'd say around the 2 post lift and the area in front of the workshop is where I'd mostly be working.

Suggested Fixtures and Lamps:

Qty.1: 2 Lamp F54T5HO strip light 46" long.
Lithonia Z 2 54T5HO MVOLT GEB10PS ($80 @ HD) ($65 @ Platt), Metalux SNF-254T5-UNV-EBT1 ($74 @ GoodMart), or equal.

Qty.14: 4 Lamp F54T5HO strip lights 92" long.
Lithonia TZR 2 54T5HO MVOLT 1/4 GEB10PS ($70 @ HD w/residential ballast or $100 w/commercial ballast) or Cooper Metalux 8TSNF-254T5-UNV-EBT1 ($83 @ Summit Elec. Supply), or equal.

Note: If you're willing to pay more for quality, consider special ordering fixtures with Sylvania or Philips Advance ballasts.

Qty.58: F54T5HO Lamps Sylvania 20949 F54T5HO 5000K $4.68 ea.
40-45,000 hr. lamp life per linked Sylvania spec sheet.

24x24, 10' flat ceiling.

Planning to use 4 rows of (3) 4' 4 bulb t8 troffer lights to keep a flat ceiling with my 16x9 being tucked up as high as possible. 2 ceiling fans will also be hung down. Lights spaced out evenly and cupboards will also have light strips under them.

What's your thoughts?
