Fixing my transmission jack and engine hoist… hydraulic cylinder seals

You sure it wasn't a SAE seal? Like 1-1/8x3-3/8x3/16?

    Need good drill bits

I've only used them on extremely hard metal and the holes were slightly oversized from the heat build up. I didn't mind because the holes actually needed to be oversized anyway. I found out a carbide end mill gives the best result but it'll chew them up eventually. I have a couple of drill bit...

    Need good drill bits

Rodman Drill makes a set that's suppose to drill through anything. I have the set and used it for drill holes in a hardened gear that HSS wouldn't touch. They recommend 2000 rpm minimum for the speed and don't recommend them in a cordless drill because of the lack of speed...

    Hydraulic cylinder seal installation tool

I have a cheap 3 piece set I bought off Amazon and have no complaints. I have a set of sharp Channellock picks to remove seals and then a set of OEM brand spoon picks in case I need to push a seal in without damaging the seal.

    $1400 Breaker Bar?

The torque wrench was probably the cheapest thing they broke while at the track. I don't think the team lost any sleep over it.

    The end of Starrett

That reminds me of the Mitutoyo groove micrometer I bought last year. I bought it brand new through Zoro cheaper than I could buy a used Starrett 260 on Ebay. For the price, it was a no brainer and one of the few measuring tools I've bought new. I usually try to stay with Starrett or Brown and...

    The end of Starrett

I really like Starrett tools but I haven't bought anything new except for new points for my automatic punch. Starrett is such high quality that used tools are still good as new. That may be part of the problem. There's people like me who bought used and then there's people who were gifted or...

Which SO to buy: 10-12 flank or 10 open/flare?

I think he means a flare wrench with a 10 and 12mm flare or a 10mm flare with a 10mm open end wrench. I like flare wrenches with the same size on both ends so when you break loose a fitting I can flip the wrench around to quickly remove the fitting. You don't have to have a second wrench but...

Who makes the best flare nut wrenches?

I just use an open end wrench. If it's 3/4 or under, my Snap-on wrenches are flare on one end and thick open on the other. I have to have twice as many wrenches but I prefer them over anything else.

Precision instrument 1/2 split beam torque wrench opinion

My pulling tractor goes to 230 ft lbs. My Snap-on torque wrench is 26" long. It's a work out doing all 26 bolts. I wouldn't want anything shorter.

What do tool do you want to buy, that you have gotten by without all these years?

I would like a 24" lathe, 10x52 mill (something bigger than a R8 spindle), horizontal boring mill and 50 ton or more press. While the tooling I have works for just about anything I need to do, bigger machinery would always be nice.

Tools you thought you'd love and just don't

I've had the same luck with the drill doctor. I think I gave mine to my uncle. I have much better luck with a bench grinder and drill point gauge.

    0.001 vs 0.0001

I use plastigauge for quick measuring but I've been told by a few different high performance engine builders they don't use plastigauge especially on connecting rods. I ran across that on a stroker build. The rods would twist just a hair making it appear that the crank wasn't square. I measured...

    Preventing rust on Drill Press

I was also surprised at how well a dehumidifier works. After a rain, my dehumidifier fills up quick. I keep it in the middle of the shop next to the drain and my rust issues have gone away.

    0.001 vs 0.0001

I have found two sets of Starrett telescoping gauges fairly cheap on FB Marketplace. One set was the double leg and the other the single. I just bought the second pair but I think both were around $75. I practiced trying to get consistent results by comparing to a known number. I wouldn't trust...

    New Snap-On F100

My first Dual 80 was very stiff when I bought it new. After about a month it broke in and the back drag is almost zero. None of my other 3/8 80s have matched the back drag but they're all still smooth and low back drag. I'm hoping the F100 is the same way but I don't want to be the guinea pig...

    New Snap-On F100

I stepped on the Snap-on truck last week and talked to the driver. He told me that the F100 haven't been released in our region yet and not sure when they will. I like the idea of a thinner head but I don't want increased back drag.

    0.001 vs 0.0001

My micrometers I use are 0.0001 resolution. 99% of the time I just read .001. The only time I worry about tenths is when I'm measuring parts that have a very small range. For a dial bore gauge, I use 0.0005 and that's close enough to check. When you're trying to measure tenths, if you're not in...

    Service truck wrench upgrade

Lost tools are the fault of the owner, but stolen tools are a different manner. Never underestimate a crackhead looking for money.

    Service truck wrench upgrade

My Wright wrenches have been amazing and I recommend them. They're priced great for being made in the US and can buy individual wrenches if you happen to lose one. If your tools do have a habit of walking away, cheaper brands like Tekton and Icon are easier to stomach if lost or stolen.
