How to polish a steel shaft

I bought this old hand cranked drill press and I’m getting close to getting it cleaned and put back together, but i have a problem. The steel bar that is the post is badly pitted everywhere except where it was in the base and where the head was mounted. It’s about 1”x15”. What can I do to get...

    Clean-up question … turpentine

I'm using this product to apply a japan finish to some tools. The label says to use turpentine for clean-up. Actually it says to remove the varnish, I’m assuming that’s the same thing. I don’t have turpentine, tried using acetone, doesn’t come off my hands easily. Probably should have worn...

    Axe heads for the cavalry

Interesting video about casting ceremonial axe heads for the British cavalry. Interesting comments too that help to explain what it’s used for. Wish it was much longer to show the finished product, and how the spike is attached.

    Rivnut question

I have a need to use a couple of rivnuts, and the bolt size will probably be 5/16” but could vary. Looking at the chart on the rivnut site, for 5/16” bolt the hole in the material needs to be 0.414 to 0.423”. Looking at a drill bit chart, the only size that works would be 27/64” = 0.4219. How...

    Testing repaired battery charger (drill)

While visiting daughter out of state, discovered that the batteries for her Hitachi cordless impact driver weren’t charging. 12v UC10SFL. It’s a compact driver that works well for her, so I didn’t want to buy a new tool. Did some research and learned that one capacitor is probably the...

    Remove rust with vinegar

I know some folks use vinegar rather than rust remover. I want to try that on an old pipe wrench. Do you use the vinegar straight, or diluted? And how long do you leave the tool in the vinegar?

    Vintage wood chisels

Didn’t see an existing thread for this. Picked up this Witherby 2” chisel today at Habitat Restore for $3. Needs a new handle, and there is a chip in the edge. They started making chisels in 1827 and sold the company about 1869, but the new company continued to mark them Witherby. You can...

    Antique sewing machine base

I have a friend who flips houses (the right way*) and his latest buy included this antique seeing machine base. The old couple who lived there were about 80 and borderline invalid, finally moved to an assisted living place. House was built in the mid 1980’s and was largely intact … original...

    Stanley 70 scraper

I recently bought this scraper, I think I paid $12. Overall in very good condition. Little rust, much of the japanning is still present, all parts are there except the ferrule. Got a couple of questions. First is the age. The trademark on the blade is Stanley Rule & Level Co which according...
