About me, I am Jeff and I live in Snellville Georgia. Snellville GA is a small town just outside Atlanta, I am actually about 8 miles east of Stone Mountain GA. I am a native of GA and have lived here most of my life. I am retired from the Army after 24 years and I work in government now. Everything I do on GJ is in my spare time. I like to tinker and expand my knowledge.

A lot of my initial tools were cheap in quality and only barely qualified for the definition of tools. As time progressed, I have expanded my collection of working tools and upgraded to higher quality tools. I, like most people am not made of money but I endeavor to improve when I have the available funds and the need to upgrade a tool.

I will add more to this thread once I have some good pics.

Thanks for the interest.

This will be a walk around the shop. Compared to other garages and shops, mine is not that impressive but it fits my needs.

In this pic, moving from left to right:
Smithy Midas 1220 XL Lathe and Mill combo
Craftsman Sander (forgot to grab the model #) 2” belt with 6” disc

Craftsman Emerson Drill Press 113.213780
Craftsman 150 series Drill Press 103.24531
Against the back wall is a work bench with:
Craftsman Block Grinder 397.19350
Pegboard with Craftsman Hand Tools
Reed 204 ½ R Vise
Working along the right side from back to front:
Gunsmithing bench
Wilton 1740 Vise
Vertical Oven
Sink
The main work bench (Free standing) with
Columbian 415 Autocrat
Foredom SR
Spray paint storage

A closer look at the Smithy Midas 1220 XL combo. I realize it’s not a Monarch or Bridgeport but it was free and does what I need it to do.

A closer look at the sanders drill presses. In all honesty, the 1” harbor freight belt sander see more use than the other belt sander and the block grind (when I had sone wheels on it). For the money, the 1” sander is a great tool. I do wish the quality was better, but I have not been able to find a better 1” sander without spending a fortune.

A different view of the drill presses and my small storage area.

a different view of the back wall. Block Grinder, peg board with hand tools, Reed vise, gunsmithing bench, Wilton vise. Small Refrigerator stocked with water and Guinness. In the corner you can make out my Columbian collection.

Nuts, bolts, and misc. storage with some cheap HF power tools.

This is a pic from the back wall look towards the front of the shop. Left to right:
Craftsman 14” Band Saw 124.32607
Craftsman 12” Band Saw 103.24260
Cheap harbor Freight compound miter saw
Paint booth
Spray paint storage
In the center you can see the free-standing bench

Another pic of the same from a different angle.

Well that’s my shop in a nutshell.

Thanks for the interest.

autopts, thank you.

gearhead1960, this is my basement. I have a ranch and the basement is the same footprint. The garage would be too hot in the summer here in GA.

NickH, thank you. The basement is a good shop choice in the summer in Atlanta but the largest down side is when I use anything that has a strong smell. For example, Frank Lee turned me on to using citric acid for rust removal but that stuff kicks off a rotten egg smell and if i let something sit for 24-48 hours in a citric acid bath, the entire house smells like rotten eggs for a day. I now put that stuff outside on the porch but anything that smells will extend throughout the house. Whenever we move, I am hoping to get a external shop like a detached garage.

That's a great use of space, very envious of this. I wish I had half the ability to set my shop up as a useful space. How does one get a free lathe? Love the set up man.

Consti2tion, Thank you for the comments.
So, how do you get a free lathe? You have a friend who decided he wants to cut down barrels and thread them on several rifles and decided it would be cheaper and more fun to do it yourself rather than pay a gunsmith to do it.

The that same friend decided its too much trouble to move the lathe after its all done and you offer to buy it from him and he says, nope you can have it.

In 5 years, my wife and I will be moving into our final home and I will seek to acquire a Monarch or Bridgeport lathe at that point. Until then, the chicom Smithy does what I need to do.

1. Thank you for serving!!!
2. Great organization. Your shop looks fully prepared to tackle all of your interests with dedicated spaces for specific tasks; awesome!
3. You have a stockroom worth of parts and materials - that is one of my own goals, so I can avoid the 4 trips to the store in one day time penalties.
4. Your build thread(s) documentation is excellent - pics and descriptions!

Sounds like a great friend indeed.

You will have a hell of a lathe with a Monarch or Bridgeport, I look forward to seeing some more stuff you’ve got in the works.

My wife and I purchased what we are hoping is our final home last year. I just need to talk her into letting me get a lathe now hm.. a Bridgeport mill would be a nice addition as well.
