And what I get for being fancy:

1716951962227.png

The "hole" on right had the tree support fail...what I suspect happened is there may have been a blob or something on the extruder end then as it moved across the part it snagged and flipped the support out of the feature and that was all she wrote. I tried to salvage it and get it back in place....obviously didn't work so after a couple of layers I cancelled it.

Had I been feeling super cheap....I could've used that as it did make more then a half circle and would've held the containers....but I tossed it. Changed the print to "normal" support which takes a bit longer/uses a bit more filament but makes the pattern in that feature so doesn't have as big of risk of causing problems

Dust collector progress:

Needed a way to place the 3" rockwool insulation onto the lid and keep it from falling down. So used up some filament spools printing these 2.5" diameter washers

dust 1.jpg

Laid out in a grid like pattern

dust 2.jpg

Poor planning part 1 happened here. Thought I made the lid out of 1/2" Plywood and didn't like the idea of screwing into that with long screws so thru bolted it with #8 all thread cut down to 3-3/4" with nylocks on both ends

Turns out...I actually used 3/4" plywood and 2-3/4" long grk screws like used on the "tail" piece here would've been far simpler and better....oh well

dust 4.jpg

M12 Milwaukee cutoff tool worked great for cut the all thread

dust 5.jpg

What should've been used had I looked at the top...oh well

And finally got the lid on the box!

dust 6.jpg

Clamps are due to a heavy bead of silicone sealant I put on, didn't want to use glue in case it needs to come off. I made the lid oversized and will flush trim with a router then go back and put the screws in.

Looking good! So many great 3D Printer projects make me want one really bad again.

Yes, you should get a printer! Join us on the dark side as our robot slaves help us feel productive when "responsibility" and "kids" or "family" call us away from our preferred projects! Bambu or Prusa would be my recommendation, would lean Bambu because of color change, but they both are solid machines

I need to stop buying "stuff" that makes me do work:

1717609327821.png

Playset finish is 3 years old and got somewhat beat up in the hailstorm, so getting refinished. Helps that insurance did cover the refinishing....so new to me pressure washer. 11hp Honda, 3.5 gpm, 3k psi, like most very lightly used and was owned by a pretty meticulous guy so should last me a long time. Stopped at Northern Tool and picked up a 50' hose to go with the new 25' one that came with it, also picked up pump oil for it but he says it was changed a couple years ago and sight glass looks good so it may stay on the shelf for now.

Now to find room in the shed for it....getting a bit full

Progress....and probably the first time I've missed the drywall lift I used to have

1717771879329.png

The shelf was already there and the brackets were in a close enough position....unsure if I'll leave it like that long term or hang from ceiling with Unistrut. Either way it's close enough for now to be able to get some flex hose in to connect it to the blower and get the shelf brackets positioned so I can start the process to get filters installed

Depressingly little progress on garage projects in the last week or so, once again silly work and life getting in the way, but in this case mostly work.

Mother nature gave a few opportunities for some fun sky watching...most it amounted to for us was heavy rain so all worked out

one .jpg

five.jpg

The hail storm hit the playset hard, and after 3 years since it was installed and refinished (was used when I bought it) it was time for it again. Powerwasher already did its thing, so was now time for sander

two.jpg

Had to hit most of the horizontal surfaces, vertical/angled surfaces the finish was still in really good shape

four.jpg

The deck got a complete sanding to knock down the high ridges with some 80 grit. For a bit it made me regret passing up on the big Festool Rotex sander on marketplace a couple months ago....though a belt sander with some 60 or 80 grit wouldn't be out of place here and would be far far cheaper. Still need to bring out the detail sander and hit around the pickets on the fence posts and a few other spots

While at it...the climbing wall has seen better days and with 2 kids now using it...time for some repairs

seven.jpg

The decision to put the slats on the backside of the posts putting the (2) screws per end in tension and trying to pull out of the 4x4 was a poor decision by the mfg/assembler. Assuming it was done to minimize the gap at the top between the wall and the deck...but either way I'm not repeating it and will be screwing these on the front of the post

Required supply to a big box...this time the orange one as selection at blue was lacking:

three.jpg

(6) 5/4 x 6 cedar boards with treatment...so should exceed the life of the rest of the structure. 'Lil Red really enjoyed playing with the carts that could spin in circles and was very upset when I pushed the cart without him

Knocked the boards down to the required 53.5" length with the tracksaw in the driveway. Way simpler...and cleaner for the garage

six.jpg

Which brings us to the end of progress on that part. Still need to strip the hand holds and existing boards, mount the new ones and then restain...but it's mid 90's and a bit humid so all that outside work can wait for a cooler day :)

Also finally bought a new tarp/roof for it. Decided not to go with the "typical" replacement playset tarp that seems to get destroyed in 2 or 3 years and bought a custom sized one from an online tarp place that should be a bit heavier duty and hopefully last longer. I didn't ask for approval of the "gray" color from the decider of aesthetic choices....but thought it was better than black, white or red. Will probably look a bit odd compared to the normal choices of dark green or a red/yellow/blue combo....more to come on that in 2 weeks.

In other garage related things, been picking up a few things for car cleaning as I've admittedly been delinquent on that over the past couple years. So trying to treat them a bit better...and "them" may be growing by 1 later this summer....more to come on that

So amongst other stuff....eight.jpg

MTM PF22.2 foam cannon, along with some various cleaners, a soap and some other stuff have found their way here. Now need to get a space identified for them to live

Put all your car care gear together in a place that makes access easy. All my car wash stuff goes into a bucket with the grit guard in the bottom, and all my cleaning products go on a shelf in front of the lift where I can just reach up and grab them. The easier you make the process, the more likely you are to use it...same reason my wife has her own shop vac in the garage next to her pickup ;).

It's all about habits when it comes to that stuff. When I was a single no kids included dude, I had all the time in the world, and my stuff was PRISTINE all the time. It now becomes a "make it happen" chore, haha.

Keep the world populated in redheads, I did my part, the youngest is getting more blond as he ages, but its most definitely strawberry blond! That last bit of Viking heritage holding on from my moms' side haha!

Happy father's day!

Lunch time shenanigans

Went out to strip the boards off the climbing wall and was wanting to get new boards mounted...no foreshadowing at all

playset 1.jpg

Quickly discovered that the posts weren't as solid as I had thought....

playset 2.jpg

So will be picking up a couple new posts before this goes any farther...so I stripped off the handholds, tossed the boards in the trash can and then brushed off a small army of ants I disturbed...which made me add "spray play area for bugs" to the mental to do list

Oof, bummer on the swingset. This is precisely why my wife and I agreed to pay a bit more and get a Lifetime maintenance free playset.

Ironically I have a coworker who has offered me his Lifetime one that the kids have outgrown....challenge is it's 3 hours away...so for now will continue on with the piecemeal repair of this one

Great point sir...thanks! I've got a spot that is wide and shallow that I should be able to put a shallow shelf on and not draw the irritation of the wife as it's on the wall she parks along....more to come on that.

Yeah...that red hair draws a lot of funny looks when they look at us and see absolutely none of it lol. I was apparently a redhead till about a year old and it turned....his has gotten a bit darker but appears to be sticking around. I think there is 1 living relative of his that I'm aware of across both sides of the family that has red hair....too much German heritage in him I guess

This creative carpet farmer is definitely going to be a red head for awhile though.

He's got a future on a custom harvest crew for sure! I've seen some creative "trailering" behind combines but up on the grain tank is a new one for sure!

Is your part of Kansas fighting the weather?

Martin

We missed the big rain Saturday night that you could probably see off to the south. We had an inch at the farmstead/home base...6 miles north a neighbor next to one of the fields had 3.5", get to 15 and 20 miles north and there was 5.5" to 6" overnight in spots. The runoff pushed all the creeks up out of their banks and brought the local river (Republican) up quite a ways...but 24 hours or so later and water has generally receeded

So right now we're set for a couple days on water...but could use a break from the wind...tough to spray your fields when Mother Nature trying to blow it to the next county...or state

We had 2.60" total this weekend in the northeast corner of KS, but it damn sure has brought the wind! Feel like I'm back home in western NE. We had a saying in regard to the wind where I'm from, "Nebraska ***** and Wyoming blows"

So impromptu activity of getting a portable AC unit going at my inlaws when their unit died... Failed coil on a 25 or so year old unit and new unit not available to be installed till next Thursday. There was an unused portable unit on a family members shelf... So putting it back into service

Thanks to Dad and 20 yrs of having busted **** for giving me a solid idea of what I'm walking into and thinking thru what is likely required to fix... Was able to round up all the likely stuff and head over

Finished result.... Duct tape in corner required due to the casement crank stud not allowing the 1/4" ply to go all the way back and someone wasn't thinking far enough ahead to drop the inlet port lower to let it stick into that hole.

Screenshot_20240618_173431_Gallery.jpg

Ignore the safety sandals...thought about bringing track saw but didn't want to bring 2 powered wood butchering devices so Bosch jigsaw only

Screenshot_20240618_173435_Gallery.jpg

assuming it continues to work I'll tape up the rest of the perimeter tomorrow to seal it better and hide a couple sloppy spots

Evening gathering of The Makita Club at the clubhouse... Including the new to me 18v cordless trim router which I'd like to dedicate to a roundover bit.... But until I buy a couple more will have to probably swap around from roundover to chamfer to flush trim

Screenshot_20240619_214011_Gallery.jpg

Got the posts set and all the horizontals slats on without time to spare before I needed artifical light. Hopefully this weekend hand holds can get located and I get the thing restained

FB marketplace struck again. This time for a Jessem miter gauge

20240622_203647.jpg

Seller also has a 16/32 drum sander with very minimal usage I lusted over for a bit but ultimately left. I have to get the dust collection going before I add more dust producing machines.... Or so I keep reminding myself

Made a little progress on dust collecting

20240622_210731.jpg

And also ordered one of these from California Air Tools

Screenshot_20240623_071523_Firefox.jpg

I don't use a ton of compressed air and was looking for smaller and quiet so this should fit the bill and let me mount it up on a high shelf to save the floor space. I've got 3 hose reels that have been accumulating for probably 15 years that need to get put into service as well

Supposed to have Monday and Tuesday off work... See if that happens and if the planned garage time occurs or not

Well 2 days off turned into a short 1 day off....but oh well and it was entirely my fault for sitting down and trying to get a "few" things done....quickly it was 4pm.

Little bit of progress on dust collection

filters in.jpg

3D printer is running to print an adapter/insert hopefully go from that flex hose to the filter plenum box

Air conditioner not working in the truck again....assume it's low on cool juice again. Last time(9 days ago or so) they said it was the Schrader valve leaking on the liquid line they had just replaced....so see if they can find another leak or if the valve wasn't fixed the last time....yay summer time! At least tomorrow moves out of the upper 90's

Now you know why I invested in AC tools. I had an experience like that once and I never cared to go through it again. Course now they changed the Freon type on newer vehicles so I’ll have to either invest in new tools or learn tricks to work with them.

Yeah....I used to have a set of gauges and a vac pump....got rid of both when I left Chicago. This is just old enough it's not the new YF123 or whatever the fancy stuff is and the shop so far has been good and handled it as warranty repair. Rain just stopped though here so probably going to go out and pop the hood and pull out a black light as there is tracer die in it.

New toy day

20240629_125818.jpg

Nice packaging

20240629_125930.jpg

20240629_130441.jpg

Had to install the 2 air intake filter canisters with intake straws, otherwise was ready to go

20240629_130432.jpg

20240629_130819.jpg

For what was a factory blem... Very happy with how it looks

And in its intended spot

20240629_132147.jpg

Now to figure out next steps

Intending to plumb in a cooling loop of some sort between the pump and tank, that stainless flex line should help make that easier. Thinking about a copper coil loop submerged in a bucket of water. After that will be a filter and possibly a dessicant drier which is total overkill for my usage.

For now I think only drops will be for 2 ceiling or wall mounted hose reels I already own. Debating on how to plumb them, I have a couple rolls of 3/4" pex and assorted fittings from plumbing projects and for ceiling mounted with no UV exposure I'm sure it would do fine.

I could also pick up the Rapidair maxline kit in town at Northern Tool which is what I'm leaning towards

Either way significant progress on this project should be slotted behind dust collector which will hopefully have more progress tomorrow...

Speaking of reels....this is the first one to get looked at. Reelcraft 4625 which I got off a surplus "stuff" auction at the plant I worked at about half a dozen titles ago. I doubt I gave more then 10 bucks for it, but came out of a prefinish primer booth so it has a solid collection of primer all over it. Once that was kinda cleaned up it was time to pop it apart as it got pulled out of service due to the ratchet not working

reel 1.jpg

After getting the hose off and a couple self tapping screw out...not hard to see why the ratchet pawl doesn't engage anylonger...

reel 2.jpg

Looks to be a $240 reel new now...so I'll see if I can find a spring I can make work in the "Misc hardware" tote and put it back together after the case and the hose get a powerwasher supplied cleaning

And for a change of pace on this barrage of updates....buying brownie points with the wife and her coworkers with articulated animals off the 3d printer:

shark.jpg

Printed very nicely, about 7 hours total in PLA with .16mm layer heights, it's larger then a lot of the animals and has to be laid diagonal on the bed to fit

Edit: File source for shark:

Marketplace distraction

20240630_134941.jpg

40 or so bd ft of 4/4 white oak at 2 bucks a ft, couple have a decent crook but bigger issue is wtf do I put them as they're 12' lol

In discussion he asks if I need any dust collector stuff.... So to his shop we go. Turns out he's retired flooring contractor selling out and heading to South Carolina

$100 then got the barrel full of 4 and 6" flex hose and the box full of fittings, mostly bought the box for the metal blast gates that will hopefully get installed over the next couple days

Back to progress for the project that hopefully *****... Pun Intended

Main trunk run coming into cyclone. Ran it straight out of the cyclone as far as I could before I was going to hit obstructions. 6" main, first wye is for a future run up and across the ceiling, then it turns down at a 45

20240630_145350.jpg

Stepping back a bit

20240630_145401.jpg

That Wall Control board comes down next and then it will transition to vertical and at the bottom a 6 x 6 x 4 wye with the 4" heading to the table saw.

At this point I'm planning to tape with foil tape all pipe joints but trying not to solvent weld them to make it more adaptable down the road. Thoughts?

After the table saw wye, it will transition to horizontal running to the right with 2 more 45's. Plan is it will be just above the stem wall/bottom plate to loose the least amount of space to push tools against the wall.

Also pressed order on Rapidair Maxline 1/2" kit. Inlaws are with us for a bit and father in law needs a project so hopefully going to put him on that

I was going to foil tape my joints as well for the same reason. I figure if it works for an AC duct it must have a decent seal. If we both had that idea I think we are on the right track.

Before I taped mine I was also thinking about a little bead of caulk ( also could be later cut with a razor keeping that adaptability ).

Do you need to ground the PVC to prevent static electricity buildup and a possible fire?

I’ve had mine hooked up with PVC for 7 years without a ground and no issues….Yet

This might be one of the most hotly debated topics I've seen on woodworking/home shop forums.

My summary of what I've found reading on/off again about this topic over the years is....No it's not necessary but it can't hurt. I haven't found any citations online that can actually show that static buildup was the source of a fire or could generate sparks under the right (or wrong) conditions.

I'm probably going to run a bare copper wire down the main trunk and ground it via a thru bolt back to the motor/impeller housing as it's cheap, won't be hard and can't hurt...but I haven't found anywhere that can show it's really needed. In industrial systems you're running metal ducts and you'll have photoeye's looking down the pipes looking for sparks/sources of light to then activate a cascade/flood system into the pipe to prevent anything from getting into the baghouse/main collector but those sources of sparks are from debris/foreign elements getting in, not from static buildup.

@loganb

Nice as I too was also debating about a fillet bead of caulk that could be easily cut....we shall both move on then!
