Very good point. I would heartilly agree with the poster who said, if going to look over a used lathe and tooling, FIND an experience person to go with you. (VERY IMPORTANT!!)

Well, i will toss in my opinion here. If you are comfortable with a mini lathe to start, go with it, there are TONS of pages on the internet to help you out if you need it. NOW------------ When you want bigger,,,,,KEEP the mini lathe, and buy a bigger one,you'd be surprised how many machinists...

JMO, but adding a 1inch thick plate to the already existing table weight is way overkill. 1/2 inch would be enough.
