New Ontario (Canada) electrical code and AFCI

I did the code update course a couple weeks ago. As of now everything in a dwelling or attached has to be arc fault except the fridge and sump pump. Also be careful because arc faults have to be combination for series and parallel arcs. We do mostly residential and service work and have had two...

    Hole Hawgs

I use my Milwaukee fuel cordless with a Greenlee 11/16 18'' auger. that way i dont need a ladder to drill through the top plate on a wall. Been using all cordless for the last 5 or 6 years. Would like to get a cordless hole hawg but they are pretty expensive here.

    Load center brand preference

Not sure if American panels are the same as Canadian ones but We use Siemens exclusively for residental and Ch for commercial or Industrial. The Siemens seem the be built a little better then the ch, the breakers are held in a little tighter, the neutral bar is not as flimsy as the ch and the...

Thoughts on hobart xvs welding helmet

I can score a pretty decent deal on a Hobart xvs welding helmet thru a friend using her work discount. I had my heart set on a Lincoln viking 3350 but in Canada its 200 more then the Hobart. My main concern is I do a lot of body work and not sure if the helmet will keep up with the quick tacks.

Does anyone have a "nice" breaker panel ?

I honestly couldn't tell you I usually just get to bolt the pieces together and mount everything and makes sure it works, I believe it was was all Eaton though as we don't use square d much unless speced. And as for residential size last year we installed at 1200amp 120/240volt service in a...

Does anyone have a "nice" breaker panel ?

I'm willing to bet you can get a panel exactly the way you want, your just going to have to pay for it. If you can get a hold of a sales rep for a manufacture they will be able to help you out. We get custom panels built all the time with different things added into to them, some of the Eaton...

    Replacing garage door spring.

Its not to hard just need to make some winder bars. There is some good videos on youtube about this. Just be careful to follow the instructions for the spring too and keep your head away from the bars when winding.

How can one measure compressor performance?

I'm no expert but to monitor output could you not use a combination of flow rate, air pressure, current draw, compressor and motor temperature. Also time to reach a certain psi in the tank with no output. As for verifying manufacture claims you would need to know ambient temperature, altitude...

    Conduit grounding question

Good practice is running a ground in EMT, but according to the code here it is not required (states may be different) but you do have to pig tail a ground from box to receptacles as the screws are not sufficient.

    New Klein Electrical pliers

I have them, unfortunately I have problems for using as the wire strippers but they are handy as all get out as needle nose and for the occasional wire stripper. They work well as wire strippers but I'm just so used to my regular ones. But they are defiantly worth the money.

Need cold weather, high dexterity gloves...

I work outside alot in the winter and find that the insulated mechanics gloves work well and hold up pretty good. Another good combo for me is the full leather palm mechanics gloves with a latex glove under neath. I can still pick up screws and tools with ease and they seem to last a little...

Any one ever try sds plus core bits.

Any one ever try the smaller thin wall sds bits. I was think of getting a couple for wiring hot tubs, putting service conduits thru etc. I have a 2'' sds max bosch drill but its super heavy and not the best for smaller conduits etc. Just curious if anyone's ever tried them or if Ihave to just...

So i toured over to Lowes and they only have rinky dink plastic ones that have pinky sized holes in them. So i got to thinking...
