As the title implies, I have created a DRAFT “Stickie.”

This comes up all the time, many guys have suggested it, and I’ve been hinting around about this for awhile now and finally got around to getting it close to finished.

I plan to send it to one of the mods for their review.

Before I do that, though, I am offering it up for everyone’s review. I have no more or less authority than anyone else here. It’s my idea, I think we need one, and I think it’s the right thing to do, but I don’t want to dictate something that we don’t have broad consensus on, edit: especially from those who are the most active regulars on this board. There may be a few naysayers. I can live with that. But I don’t want go forward if it’s widely panned as unnecessary or wrong-headed.

Also, I am open to comments, suggestions, things I may have missed, other ideas, etc. I think it’s pretty good, and as you will see, the plan is to be able to modify it as needed, so it doesn’t have to be perfect.

But let me know what you think, and if most members like the idea, I will get it into ship shape and then float it by the mods.

Wait until I’m done posting (many sections…!) before you reply.

THE INDEX

Because this is a forum-based site, it is arranged chronologically – from the newest to the oldest conversations, not encyclopedically. Consequently, it’s not very conducive for navigating by topic. Longtime members often forget about older threads and newcomers don’t even know they’re there, buried somewhere back on Page 53. Here, therefore, is an INDEX of Vintage Discussion threads, regardless of which page they are currently on.

Government stock numbers
- Any marking that looks like this (41-S-1076, 38-B-3345, 13-O-1530, etc), sometimes with a prefix (e.g., N41-S-1076), is a phonetic Federal Standard Stock Catalog number, often called the first Federal Stock Number, and it dates from 1934 to 1952. Administered by the Treasury Dept.- Any marking with a "DA" or some other prefix or no prefix and an 11-digit number (in groups separated by hyphens, don't count the hyphens, e.g., 5180-698-7964) is a Federal Stock Number (FSN) dating from 1953 to 1961. - Any marking with a "DSA" and an 11-digit FSN is from 1962 to 1974. - Any marking with a "DSA" and a 13-digit FSN, adding "00" into the old FSN for a COO code placeholder, is from 1974 to 1977. - Any marking with or without a "DLA" (Defense Logistics Agency) and a 13-digit NSN (and much more likely to actual have country codes (NATO, very contemporary, not vintage) is from 1978 on.

Wow, nice start. Covered most of my hot buttons of categorization. A few notes, which are not in any great order.

It seems like the "vise repair" thread has similar topics in the "vintage ratchets", so a separate cross list of repair threads may not be needed, which another forum I am on has: (Mods & Repairs) Maybe under your "What is This" section, a hint or two on how to track down a How do I Repair This thread, go to the appropriate Tool Types thread first, rather than starting a new thread on pulling the main screw.

When you post the thread links (posts 8-12), maybe shorten them down (tinyurl), or bury them as hyperlinks to keep the main thread's format more readable.

Under the searching the Internet section, this is another great search string, which eliminates when someone on another site mentions a great thread on GJ, brings back only GJ results.

Nice work

Way too long, IMO. People already don't read stickies...that won't help. At minimum, you need a TL;DR at the top

I like it. Of course as with any stickies it's only as effective as the willingness of people to read it. I've already bookmarked this page and will use it in lieu of the search engine (which I find horrible here). The OWWM site uses stickies and the members are pretty adamant about referring people to it when they ask questions that can be answered by the stickies. This is a very nice crowd here in the Vintage Tools section but if we continually answer questions that can easily found in the stickies....people won't use the stickies. I hate asking questions and it's always a last resort after trying to find the information myself. Some others aren't that way. My biggest peeve is the one or two post folks with the "what's this" immediately followed by "what's it worth". Sometimes I think we drive up the cost of our beloved hobby. I absolutely LOVE uninformed sellers. Anyhow...I'm a windbag so I'll shut up. Thanks for all the work you put into compiling this Lugz. I know I'll use it, stickies or not, and so will many others.

I like the idea of the sticky...

What I dislike is the speed of how fast the posts are moving, some guys and gals are showing some super cool vintage tools that in itself would make for some killer stories but...(always a but) they are gone in just a few hours and that is a shame.

I get it some people are tired of a few of us telling stories; I hear you but (always a but) I am still waiting for other GJ members to tell their own stories. It would seem that a handful are the only ones on the GJ telling stories and I have been waiting 10 years for other GJ members to start their own stories.

I get it pictures are what everyone loves, but after seeing 10,000 block grinders and 20,000 vises it gets kind of old, (my opinion only).

I get it show me your cannons, your "UNOBTAINIUM", what is it worth, what the GJ makes me buy, etc. all good posts but darn they speed up the posts even faster would they not be better posted in the general tool section?

Private I so owe Twertsy a tool story, but if you want give me a little time and I can work on a Utica story for you guy/gals, seeing how I have a lot of their tools.

Good job private as always I enjoy your posts....:thumbup:

Thanks for putting all the work into this, I think it's a great idea.

One suggestion...where you said

FAQ

Can I sell tools here?

No. Absolutely not. Sales and links to sales of your own tools on eBay, CL, etc, are forbidden. This is a Discussion board. There is a Classifieds area for selling tools on GJ.

It kind of sounds like you're telling people to go to a whole different website. I'd change the text a little to say something like this:

FAQ

Can I sell tools here?

Not in this section of the Garage Journal, but sales and links to sales of your own tools on eBay, CL, etc, are allowed in the Classified section of the board. Go to the main page and then scroll down, or click on this link to go there directly: Classifieds

Lugz,
I appreciate the amount of work you've put into the Stickie. It would save me a lot of time navigating around the site. I think that you should submit it now to the moderators and if necessary, edit it later. Great job!

Way too long, IMO. People already don't read stickies...that won't help. At minimum, you need a TL;DR at the top

Greg,
I agree with this comment. Basically, I'd simply have an "index" in the first post with Topic Links to subsequent posts below.

JoCo, Woody, and Don,

Thanks!

Stuart,

I agree. I will make that change.

Todd,

Thanks. I knew the Index would be the most popular part of this. But the Index isn't exhaustive and frankly, it won't by itself solve some of the other "hot buttons" that I talk about in the ReadMe, which others have alluded to in reply, and which many other regulars complain about on a regular basis here all the time. I wouldn't even bother submitting a "stickie" if it didn't include a No Sales warning, the plea to Search before posting, and the Tutorials on how to do that. Hopefully that will convince new and old members alike to realize, 'We probably have a thread on that topic already!'

With respect to the links to other hand tool collecting sites, other helpful hints and quickie collectors' guide I developed, there are times it would eliminate half the threads on page 1.

As for the How to Post Photos tutorial, unless you scroll down to the Q&A section, and find someone asking the same danged question, you can't find one in a centralized place here. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't ask how to do it.

I get short and sweet, and I will try to abbreviate it. But it being too long to read can't be worse than it not being there at all to read, which is what we have right now. If those other parts in addition to the Index help even a little it'd be a good thing. If not, they certainly don't hurt anything just sitting up there. But they can't help if they're not there at all.

EDIT: I couldn't resist a TA plug. It gives me comfort thinking of it as sitting on a lukewarm backburner rather than cold storage.

All,

After thinking about it further, I now have what I think is the best version. It moves the Index to the very top and everything else (FAQ, Helpful Hints, etc), which has been significantly reduced, follows the Index. Once I clean that up and reduce all the visible URL links to hyperlinked threads titles, I will post a new thread without the "DRAFT" in the title so the mods can just turn it into a permanent "Stickie". Don't reply to that one. You can continue to reply here. Probably not until next week, though. I have a busy weekend.

Another note: where you said "For research purposes, if you use ‘Google Books’ instead..."

Another benefit of using Books is you can limit the date range results, which lets you find the original version of Buffalo Tools, instead of the present stores in Buffalo which sell tools. ie end date of 1920.

The EAIA Directory of American Toolmakers (DAT) is another great history resource, tho I keep pushing for updates and a digital version.

What is that, 23/24 stickies? That's a LOT of stickies. Simple is usually better. Sometimes change is only the illusion of progress. I'm just sayin'.

Good stuff, RTM. I will incorporate that. Already incorporated your first tip.

Rikki,
It will be just one (1) stickie thread, and I have it down to four or so posts under that. One for the Index, and then 2 or 3 for the rest. If you look at the existing stickies on other GJ forums, there are more than a few that are several posts long. But I appreciate your caution.

Remarkable work, Lugz. It's easy to see how something like this could be of great value.

Thanks. As Don and JoCo alluded to, I've already used the Index myself and it's not even "official" yet. I think in my first couple years here I was only subscribed to a dozen or so threads. That was manageable. As my interests grew, so did the site, and now I have 3 or 4 pages of subscriptions. Just like the regular pages, they are not alphabetical, they are chronological. The Index is much faster!

The same people who pay for all the threads about Craftsman Drill Presses (last count, 137!), Hardware Store complaints (too many to count!), Harbor Freight Pros and Cons (not crazy or insipid enough to even try to count!), Mac & Cheese, Baby Pics, WTF Pics, V8 Supercars, and all those timeless, indispensable questions like what kind of coating to use on non-painted vises and whether to use 10mm semi-deep or deep sockets for car repair.

Oh, and stickies save bandwidth.

Lugz, I'm just seeing this but really like it even though it is long. What you've put together for anyone willing to use it, is a user's guide for not only the forum, but also for collecting and research in general. Thanks for taking the initiative on this and for the hard work. I can't think of a thing to suggest but will check your catalog links to see if I have any additional suggestions to send you later.

Thanks, guys, and you're welcome. It's been a long time coming. I think we may be the only forum on GJ without a stickie, and yet, in my opinion, the forum that needs one the most. I wish I wasn't busy this weekend. But I plan to post the new and improved (and much shorter!) version on Monday and then immediately ask the mod NUTTSGT to Stickie it.

I'm out. Play nice!

I've made the other thread a Stickie and have closed it. If any additional information is needed needed, have Lugz PM me and I can move it to the Stickie.
